Freedom Wars – the new PlayStation Vita exclusive from Japan Studio – sounds awesome. Following this week’s official reveal, Sony has followed up with a full 12-page feature on the adventure in Famitsu magazine, which offers a broad overview of what you can expect from the game when it releases in 2014.
The title is set in a dystopian future where people live in competing, walled-off city states known as Panopticons. In order to keep the population under control, each person is born with a one-million year prison sentence. However, the people can reduce this by retrieving civilians from colossal foes known as Abductors.
You’ll be able to create your own character – either male or female – as well as an Accessory, a kind of computer-controlled assistant that will aid you in battle. These sidekicks can be customised even more deeply than your main hero, allowing you to select costumes, voice sets, and more. We suspect that there’s a big opportunity for microtransactions here, too.
Much like Monster Hunter or Phantasy Star Online, though, you won’t be fighting alone. The game will support up to eight players at once, and will boast both competitive and co-operative modes. It will also include Near and GPS compatibility, the latter of which will allow you to fight for your own Panopticon in the real world.
This title sounds like it’s shaping up to be a big deal for Sony, so we’re sure that we’ll be seeing more over the coming weeks – perhaps even at E3. In the meantime, check out the debut trailer embedded below, and let us know if you’re excited in the comments section.

Very cool. A Vita E3 push is on the cards me-thinks.
@KALofKRYPTON At this point, Sony may as well just have an eight hour presentation!
@get2sammyb Ha! Now wouldn't that be something?
@get2sammyb does this game have a single player campaign or its just multiplayer?
Since people are always complaining when a game isn't on Vita can I complain that this isn't on PS3?
Looks awesome.
I'm liking the sounds of the story, I hope the gameplay ends up being good.
looks very intresting
This ones definitely got potential. Totally seems like a system seller to me! (At least in Japan)
Is this confirmed to be the big release that was teased earlier then?
Sounds good so far.
This sounds amazing! Playing co op with my girlfriend ( she just got a Vita, yay ) would be awesome and the Japanese style art design and story will appeal to us both, Thanks Sony!
Don't have a Vita, but I already bought Soul Sacrifice in anticipation of buying one once console and memory prices have dropped (ESPECIALLY the memory) and once more color options are available (I want white or mint, something winter-ey). This game is looking like it'll be amazing and may do much better than Soul Sacrifice as a game that will sell the system. Being able to fully customize a humanoid companion character for offline play is a hunting RPG gamer's dream come true. Should contrast well with 3DS's MH4 with the full customizable kitty.
Seems like my eventually Vita library will be mostly these types of games....niche JRPGs as well I suppose...maybe I'll just get this instead of God Eater 2 to avoid over saturating my future Vita with these games...then again I wanted that one for PSP/Vita crossplay..............
This game is such a let down snore fest for me. So disappointed.
EDIT: I was hoping for Gravity Rush 2.
Looks like it might be a system seller
