There may be a wealth of free-to-play content already in the pipeline for the PlayStation 4, but there’s one game that Sony wants you to sample out of the box. The Playroom, the platform holder’s augmented reality technology demo, will come pre-loaded with every machine, allowing you to experience virtual pong in your living room.
Unfortunately, given the nature of the content, it seems pretty likely that you’ll need a PlayStation Eye in order to actually play the game. The inclusion of the software on the system’s dashboard lends credence to the rumours that Sony was originally planning to bundle the camera with the console. Right now, the device will cost you $59.99 extra at launch.
You can check out a demo of The Playroom in action below. There’s some neat technology on display here, including facial recognition and more. Sadly, it’s unlikely to impress anyone that already owns a Kinect. Still, if the application comes with Trophies, then we’ll be more than willing to spend a few moments vacuuming robots with our DualShock 4.

So I need to pay 60$ to use this free game?
Hell no.
I dont get why everyone assumes this being on the dashboard means Sony intended to bundle in the camera n quickly U-turned. Singstar is locked to the Ps3 dashboard now, deos that mean Sony intended on bundling the Singstar Microphones since that time? Nope. Its just there to entice a persons curiosity. To be honest at £45, the camera isn't that expensive. I dont intend on buying one at launch, but will do eventually. I like the look of this AR software so hopefully Sony can build on it, even though I worry that thier AR offerings will be more 'casual' like the curent gen ones.
isnt it a pity that no move games have been shown.... We move players are not gonna buy ps4 if not smth good is shown
Pretty rubbish to give you a game to play, but doesn't include the device with which to play it with, good move
Mod edit: Careful with your use of language.
At least Microsoft got it right by saying since the Kinect has to be connected in order to use the system, at last we included the device, for a price of course, there are other ways to entice someone to buy something, but leaving the main piece of the puzzle out is pure idiocy
@LampShade What's homosexual about it? Or if its happy why you complaining?
I fancy sony's approach. I don't ever want to have kinect (and a xbox one for that matter) so IF i wOULD get one, id have to pay for kinect even though I'd never use it. That sucks. I think PS4 got it right, little touchpad on the controller (even though the LEDs are no mostly useless) for some small further comfort or ios-game-ports and off you go.
I want games like BioShock and The Last Of Us, or Destiny, The Devision, etc... not some fancypants mingle-mongle casual crapfest!
But thats just me...
@coroum
Is the move supposed to work with the ps4?
@ztpayne7 y i think so all moves work with ps4 if someone can confirm... I think they work with ps4
RUFKM.
When I saw the trailer for this game a few days ago, all I was hoping was that they wouldn't have the nerve to CHARGE for this crap. So I'm glad they aren't, even if you still have to buy a camera to play it.
No prob camera already purchased!!! XD My lil sis might love this next time i see her! =)
@ztpayne7 The move controllers work with the PS4, the new camera is 4 the PS4!
The move will work with ps4. It was confirmed at the PlayStation meeting in February.
The thing is, while it does seem like a cheap way to intice people to buy a PS eye, most people who aren't interested in it probably won't care about this sort of thing anyway.
I see this more as just Sony's way of saying "bought PS eye? Well heres a little something to get you started".
@LampShade it's free. Stop whining.
@LampShade Right, but Microsoft's console costs a lot more money. This way you have a choice.
@mibtar people complain about everything now-a-days I agree with you, it's free, would you rather pay $100 more for just the system and still have to pay $60 just to get a game?
I'm glad Sony did it this way instead of doing it the way MS did, I do like my choices.
See now THIS is what I'm talkin about! THIS is what Sony needs to do more of. Innovative, creative, fresh new ideas and gameplay experiences that can only be offered on their system. I know it's just a little side game, and not anything to provide a core experience, but it's the POTENTIAL that I'm excited to see. I'm glad that Sony is finally starting to flex their creativity., and it's good to see Sony stepping up to the plate and well prepared this time. Nice, hopefully some developers will find a way to integrate the Eye technology into a core gaming experience, kind of how Nintendo capitalized on motion controls for Zelda Skyward Sword.
@MadchesterManc It doesn't really matter if they planned to include it or not. Idk why anyone even cares. If they were planning on bundling it, I can totally see the logic in that. It's a cool device that would enable AR features such as Playroom to be accessible right out of the box. And if they did drop it to compete, I can see the logic in that too. I mean, why bundle a component with a system that not everyone will use when you can offer it separately and lower the pricetag, right? And if they never planned on bundling it, I can see the logic in that as well. Offer your accessory hardware for an additional price, and let those who want it buy it. Regardless of what the truth is, and what their initial intentions were, what does it matter? What difference does any of that make? I'm not saying this to you directly, I'm just throwing the questions out there. I know I couldn't care less what they had or didn't have planned.
