We had hoped that GamesCom would give us our first proper look at the PlayStation 4’s user interface in action, and the platform holder did not disappoint in that department. In order to kick start its press conference in Cologne, Sony Worldwide Studios executive Shuhei Yoshida took to the stage to give us a brief run through the console’s main menus – and update his Twitter account in the process.
Sitting in an armchair with his back to the audience, the likeable president demonstrated many of the system’s functions, from the live streaming area to the share button. At one point, the gaffer jumped into a match of Killzone: Shadow Fall, which took no more than six seconds tops. According to Guerrilla Games, this was all realtime.
It’s certainly impressive stuff, and seems to maintain the spirit of the XMB courtesy of a sub-menu that can be accessed at the top of the screen. Our only real concern pertains to the main game icons, which look like they could get crowded very quickly. Other than that, though, our thumbs are ready. What do you think of the user interface? Chirp your impressions in the comments section below.

Somebody was camping...
I love the sound it makes while you're navigating. Not to mention how clean and well designed it is, you can tell just how much Sony has learned from listening to customer complaints.
@Madd_Hatter40 Yeah, I'm pretty sure I saw a tent and campfire out there.
I thought the interface was perfect. When I turn my game on the first I want to see are the games I'm playing and the games my friends are playing. Great job Sony!
The interface looked great, but I would still love Sony to release a ton of information about the actual features. Still really have no idea what's included.
Will that picture of Yoshida in the chair be a built-in Theme?
I loving the look of the OS. The way you can just browse live gameplay is fantastic. Never be bored again.
@ThreadShadow it definitely is gonna be my background heh.
As long as its not just a big horizontal scroll bar like 360, then I'm happy. I'm fine with PS3's xmb, so any update is just icing. At least there's no phone keypad text input... right?
They need to redesign Vita interface. Make it more like this.
Did anyone notice the top right corner of the Killzone screen right before Shu joined the session? It's looks like a video feed, so can we broadcast live or video chat while playing online??? Check out the video starting at the 49 second mark. @get2sammyb your thoughts?
@PMasterTy9 Yeah, you can Broadcast Live, and have video chat (with sound) but I think you need the PS Camera in order for it to show your face.
@Clamedeus Awesome, I wonder how many people you can do that with at the same time.
@PMasterTy9 I'm not sure. lol I'm also wondering about this as well.
It's awesome how they merge LiveArea and XMB
