As promised last week, SEGA has announced the latest title in its popular Yakuza series. Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin – or Yakuza Restoration – stars a character named Ryoma Sakamoto, who has a more extravagant barnet than Russell Brand. The title looks like it’s going to be a historical entry, perhaps similar to the PlayStation 3’s 17th century instalment, Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan.
The publisher’s yet to attach platforms to the title, but we’re assuming that the Wii U is off the cards. Earlier in the year, series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi hinted that he was done with the PS3, suggesting that this may be a PlayStation 4 game. Sadly, considering the unfortunate fate of Yakuza 5, you’re probably going to have to plead tirelessly for a Western release.
Regardless, more details will be revealed next week.

SEGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
@ShogunRok I know, right?
EDIT: Aside from Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts, has a Japanese-centric game been announced for PS4 yet? I can't think of one. I wonder if this will be the first. And if so, I wonder why it's not being saved for TGS.
@get2sammyb The Last Guardian.
I'm sorry, I can't say that without cracking a smile. But yeah, I'm guessing we'll see the Japanese launch lineup at TGS.
As for this game's platform, it has to be PS4 if Nagoshi hinted he was done with PS3. I mean, I know it's not a main Yakuza title, but the series does so well on Sony's consoles in Japan that it'd be pretty crazy to switch to Wii U now, despite the HD remakes of the first two games. Then again, this is SEGA we're talking about.
@ShogunRok Exactly, you never know with Sega. This could be an iOS game or an Xbox One launch game in Brazil only. Whoever runs that company is a nutter.
i'm still in hope of a UK release of 5 (if only i understood Japanese then i would import it in a heart beat)
I think SEGA should add their old introduction from the Genesis Sonic games to all of their games. You can't help but smile when you hear it.
What do you guys think of a yakuza game for vita? Would it move hardware, I would buy that.
@8vpiper It would do well for Vita in Japan, but the chances of it getting released overseas is almost nonexistent. The Yakuza games on PSP were supposedly quite good, but there was never any word of them making it west at all.
And for the record, I would buy Yakuza Vita in an instant.
plead tireless for a western release? isn't the PS4 going to be region free? So we will be able to play japanese games if we import them?
I've never done that, so i've no idea if it costs an arm and a leg to import, or if it's worth doing if there is no translation of the text.
@ShogunRok
Then would it not make more sense to money hat something like this for Sony than say bioshock? Firstly since it sells only biggish numbers in japan it should be cheaper to do that. By that I think it would send more units of the shelf than a western title. The only western title i see that would be worth spending some money on would be GTA (I don't even like GTA, Getaway FTW)
For the mainline yakuza add some subtitles(I would never play it in english thats just dumb) put it on psn to save distribution cost and we would be happy!! someone tell @yosp.
@get2sammyb Have you heard about this: http://m.ibtimes.co.uk/sony-playstation-ps-vita-ps3-rumours-patents-499763.html
@8vpiper if they had both Japanese and English subtitles on the Japanese release we could import it and everyone would be happy
the Wii U gets nothing, I'm already thinking of trading it in for a PS4 pre-order This sounds interesting, I never played a Yakuza game, though, maybe I should lol.
@get2sammyb you got me there. Seriously, do you have to mention PS4 and (lack of) Japanese centric games? Now I'm depressed. It makes sense though that they'll hold it off till TGS, but it 's still kinda strange cause there still a western market for these kind of games so why so tight lipped? Unless there really isn't anything significant coming this year. Or maybe I'm just too impatient?
@mibtar Don't worry too much - I'm confident we'll see at least a few Japanese games announced at TGS. At least with the PS4 we should see a lot more games from Japan because of how easy the console is to develop for, supposedly. I've really missed my great JRPGs this gen.
@drumsandperc92 Of course, but the language is a huge barrier. These games are so good because of their stories, and unless you can read Japanese, you're not going to get that part of the experience.
I could import Yakuza 5, but I haven't, because I'd only be getting quarter of the experience. That's all I mean...
@Lelouch I've seen it, but the sources are really iffy once you track them back. I'm sitting on it for that reason, but will keep looking for a better source. Thanks for the heads up.
So pi**ssed at SEGA, I have bought every single Yakuza game released over here in the UK.
With Yakuza 5 it finally looked like there had been the first major update/improvement to the series since the PS2 original, so what do SEGA do, they decide to stop releasing the series in the UK/US when we could have had "potentially" the best Yakuza game in the series to date, nice one SEGA.
@CliffordB The problem is your copy of the games contribute to a grand total of about 147 sold outside of Japan so it makes no sense for Sega to release it, sadly.
@CliffordB Unfortunately, there's some truth in what @rastamadeus said. Both Yakuza 3 and 4 did reasonably well in Japan alone, and performed pretty poorly everywhere else.
According to the data I've been able to dig up, the third game barely broke 1 million copies sold worldwide, while the fourth failed to reach even that. And both times, Japanese sales contributed to around 65% of the total.
It's an absolute shame, as for people like us who bought both games, the fifth installment looked superb.
I hear you guys, glad it's not just me who's disappointed over Yakuza 5 not being released in the UK/US.
I just can't get over the fact that Yakuza 3 & 4 were pretty much Yakuza 1 & 2 but in HD, in other words no major improvements.
But, Yakuza 5 (from what I've heard/seen) seems to be the first Yakuza game that has been given a major upgrade in terms of gameplay/features/graphics etc. so it's a real kick in the teeth that SEGA have decided to stop at this point, it also makes no sense as surely Yakuza 5 may have sold better.
Can't believe SEGA released a spin off like Yakuza Dead Souls over here in the UK but have not released Yakuza 5, Yakuza 5 is/was one of my "most wanted" games, so frustrating.
They spend all this money on Yakuza sequels, couldn't they make just one more Shenmue?
