Consider this your last warning: there are spoilers in this article. If you haven’t finished The Last of Us yet, then you may want to consider tapping your browser’s obliging ‘back’ button right about now. Have you done it yet? Can we stop waffling? Seriously, if you’re still reading this then we can’t be held accountable for ruining the title. Run like a Clicker at the Olympic Games.
Is it safe? Phew. Naughty Dog mentioned in a recent Reddit question and answer that it intends to detail The Last of Us’ original ending at a PAX panel in Seattle later this month, but it’s already pulled back the curtain on the general gist. Creative director Neil Druckmann uploaded the following image to his Twitter page overnight, which raises some interesting questions.
It shows love interest Tess torturing a tied-up Joel – perhaps about to slit the protagonist’s throat. Those of you that have already played the game will know that the determined diva actually dies during the course of the campaign, so it’s likely that the developer originally envisioned a different story arc for the character.
If we had to guess, though, we suspect that she’s not too impressed with the bearded hero’s decision to save Ellie in this sketch. We’ll find out more at the end of the month, but this is definitely a fascinating glimpse at what could have been. Were you happy with the ending to the PlayStation 3 exclusive? WHAT THE HECK!?
THAT'S BLEAK AS ALL HELLO KITTY MAN!
I was very happy with the ending, in fact I thought it was one of the best parts of the game. So subtle and understated, but at the same time powerful and memorable. And this coming from the team that threw in blue mutants at the end of their last game! Actually I didn't mind that to much in U2, but it still shows that Naughty Dog have evolved greatly.
I own the art book that came with the Survival Edition and they do talk about how earliy story plans was to have Tess be the villain in the game but was obviously changed at some point during development. This concept art must be very early as well
Tess is alive cure confirmed! You just use Tape and broken scissors and a rag lol
@Anthinator It looks like this was drawn in 2010 judging by the artist's signature.
That's Tess? I was thinking it was Marlene - it would make it a little closer to the way the story actually went at any rate.
@RawShark Definitely Tess:
The interaction between Tess and Joel right before she dies was awesome. I can't imagine that not being in the game.
Wow... I also thought it was Marlene. Anyway I didn't really like the ending.
I liked and hated the ending at the same time. I hated that the game ended so soon leaving it open for the player to decide, but i did like the interaction between Joel and Ellie at the end because you knew, that she knew he was lying about them giving up on the cure. But ellie decided to just accept Joel and I think knew that he couldn't give her up like that, after he opened up to her about his daughter.
It was truly a very emotional ending though, i remember going into that room with Ellie laying on the table and if I was Joel, I wouldn't have been able to sacrifice her either......selfish sure, but you have to think about what he went through with his daughter in the opening story.
Wow, it seems as though the ending could have been even more mature. I don't think I could have handled it.
The ending was perfect. Glad they decided to go with the one they did. It had me pacing the floor for hours mumbling incomprehensibly to myself.
I loved the ending. I did not want joel to die lol. When he got impaled, dem feels
