Sony has revealed that the Japanese launch of the PS4 won't take place until February 22nd, 2014 — after the North American and European release.
That means Sony's forthcoming system is the first it has produced which hasn't been released in its home territory before anywhere else. Just think about that for a second.
To atone for the wait, Sony Japan has revealed that a limited edition pack will be made available which includes a digital download of Knack and a year's extended warranty, both free of charge.
The base system will retail for 38,980 Yen (£250), while the PS Eye camera bundle is 43,980 (£282).

Yeah but Yakuza: Ishin is launching with the Ps4 so Im actually more interested in thier launch than ours lol
What!!!!!?
Wow this really is a first. I'm stunned. I wonder...if the pre-orders had something to do with it this year? Perhaps the demand is higher in the states. Kinda crazy to wrap around your head.
I know it. They won't be stupid enough to launch with only western type titles in Japan, which basically tell them not to buy on day
The games which will be released in japan is good by the
At the very least, it had a Gundam
Iwata says "thank you".
If the WiiU doesn't sell well this holiday in Japan w/ SM3DW and the 10 yr old Zelda port then it really is done. Maybe Sony and MS just realize the inevitable - home consoles are done in Japan, it's all about the handhelds.
Sony knows is playing alone in Japan, so is shifting focus to the NA and European markets instead. Let’s not forget that we got the PS3 in Europe four and a half months later and we all saw what that did to the PS3 sales. I don’t think that Sony would risk losing the lead over Microsoft, by delaying the PS4 release in one of those markets. Japan is the safest to delay and they did just that.
They might lose momentum if Nintendo finds a way to gain some momentum.
For now it'll be a battle between the 3DS and the cheaper PS Vita.
Wow, aren't we special. USA totally deserves Japanese stuff before everyone else. Everybody knows we'll be super respectful about it, too, and not try to hack it or anything idiotic.............. I mean, it's cool, but why the heck?
Its sucks for Japan, but at least it means that they will use the extra time to ensure they are launching with loads of Japanese specific content.
In reality though, there is a clear strategy to tackle MS in their strongest markets. Why else would the PS4 be officially announced in the US. With no XB180 in Japan and the Wii U being...well...the Wii U, they lose nothing by waiting.
Probably because they'd get more Japanese games as launch titles, as some others have pointed out already. Sony doesn't want the PS4 being released there with "no games" to the Japanese gamers. It's actually kinda obvious, if you think about it.
Wow. Well, it was somewhat clear that the PS4 would launch in Japan after the US and Europe...but this late? This is a first, indeed.
@get2sammyb If I recall correctly, you wrote a talking point some month back suggesting this was the most valid strategy for Sony...launching outside of Japan first to get an early bridge head in those areas, then go for Japan as this is Sonys home turf, hence the one region where victory for them is a given. Good call, then.
I rather be in japan right now! I will take any rpg above killzone or driveclub.
It's a solid strategy. Sony will have good footing in Japan regardless of when the PS4 releases. It really had to concentrate on the western market, and that's what it's doing.
Still, maybe a little disappointing for eager Japanese fans.
This is quite a shock...
Then again, after the sheer pain of waiting for the PAL release of Brawl, I may have to be grateful for this earlier release.
While this might be shocking news, I think this is a smart move by Sony. This will give Europe and the US more inventory. Sony already has the Japanese market and I believe they have more patience than we do..lol
Has anyone found a list of PS4 launch titles in Japan?
@MadchesterManc I'm really jealous about that. Yakuza Ishin? No fair.
Well, Japan also got the Wii U after America and Europe, but February? That's a really big release gap.
Sony own Japan, so they is playing smart and releasing the console in Area where Xbox also have a present
