While you could connect seven controllers to the PlayStation 3, Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will support “just” four DualShock 4s. As always, it was Worldwide Studios president and beacon of knowledge Shuhei Yoshida that revealed the snippet, who was responding to a fan request on Twitter.
Fascinatingly, the Xbox One will actually be compatible with eight controllers, making it a much better option for local Bomberman tournaments, and, er, other stuff. Obviously, it would be better if you could connect more controllers to the PS4, but let’s be realistic: when was the last time that you had over four pads attached to your console? Exactly.

I hope they release those amazing controllers bundles.
They are like 45$ now and come with a game
I've never seen anything use more than 4 controllers (barring Wii U) anyway. It might also be so a bunch of Move controllers can be connected too.
a useless feature for the One.
Unfortunately this past gen has seen a drastic decrease in the number of games that had local MP anyway. AAA Titles that you'd think would have local MP (Need for Speed comes to mind, as well as many others) only supported online multiplayer.
It's as if split screen was a thing of the past!
I feel like indie games are the titles we'll see making the most use of local multiplayer going forward, but I do sincerely hope the PS4/Xone sees a reprise in Split screen and local multiplayer, as much as they might be pushing online.
But so far it doesn't look very good. Killzone and Driveclub don't offer local MP and those are two of the biggest launch titles for PS4...
Anyway, i haven't ordered a second DS4 yet. Hopefully i'll have a reason too sooner rather than later, and I wouldn't be opposed to owning 4 if games supported it! (ehm LittleBigPlanet 3?)
Nintendo has been the only company to truly push for local multiplayer consistently all these years. Bring it back, Sony!
Yeah... I've never owned more than 4 controllers much less used them. Interesting as to why the capped it though when the PS3 can use 7, maybe the PS4 pads touch pad simply uses too much bandwidth (pure guess I know little about Bluetooth and its limits).
I'm pretty sure I used more than 4 controllers at once with rock band. So it could be a problem if they ever bring that back.
If you were playing in a really really big room and the console is hooked up to a projector that might make some sense. Otherwise its gonna be a pain crowding 8 people in front of the TV. Really useful feature... really.
Pff you should see whats going on on IGN comments about this article...
Seriously I never EVER had more than 4 pads connected to ANY console!
Only time ive ever had four connected to any system is for smash bros or mario karts, golden eye and occasionally other fps. 4 was seldom used, 8 is ridiculous.
@ztpayne7 Yeah the only time I needed more than 4 controllers was for Rock Band which I never used all 5.
This stat is so pointless, the PS4 is beating the xbox one into the dust, who gives a crap about 8 controllers vs four? Is this the best they can do?
I think I might have used 5 for LBP 2 after the Move bundle came out - 1 DS3, 2 Moves and 2 Navs. Or maybe not.
The Nav must be a goner if they are only allowing 4 connections. And I liked how the Move was always 7, made it easy to spot.
Imagine how small everyones screen would be. It would be like looking into one of those little makeup mirrors.
I don't see how anyone could think that this is a good idea. Who would own that many controllers, let alone use them?
@drumsandperc92 Add Battlefield 4 to that list.
Hey, four is better than two (like ps1-2). I hated the multiport adapter things.
I like the idea of being able to connect more controllers to your console but eight seems a little two much IMO. Honestly though in this day and age with online gaming who even does the whole four player same room game thing anymore? I think the last time I did that was with one of the Smackdown games on PS2. I dont even think I have played a multiplayer game offline on my Xbox 360 with more than 2 people.
The more the merrier however its hardly a deal breaker.
With the exception of Bomberman, I can't think of any games that support that many players and are also fun.
Plus, most people won't need more than 1 or 2 controllers anyway.
The only game I've played on my ps3 with more than one other person is little big planet 2. Good times.
I think 4 is a good limit, though 5 seems to work well for the Wii U. I wonder if there will be any use of the Vita as a controller.
Four controllers are more than enough. I almost ALWAYS play by myself anyways, and rarely need my backup 2nd controller for a friend. I do miss the days as a teenager with split screen 4 player Mario Kart 64 or GoldenEye..... there's no fun like local co-op, but, then adulthood comes, friends move, have kids, or are always at work, and the days of local co-op madness comes to an end.
4 is just fine, 8 split screens on a 40'' tv would just be murder! Hell and it not like every last per owns a 73 to 83'' tv in there livingroom let alone there bedroom wich i may remind u is were a majority of these consoles will actually be sitting!!!
Even with PS3, there are only 3 games I can think of that actually used the 7 player local limit: Bomberman Ultra, Hamster Ball (only for one game mode), and Cubixx HD.
I've tried so many times to get AT LEAST a 4 player game of Cubixx HD going, but it's really hard getting that many friends together nowadays. Oh well, I guess PS4's 4 controller limit is fine with me. If, like everyone's suggesting, there might be some crazy combinations going like 4 DualShock 4/Move controllers/ Vita(s) going on for some games.
i have 3 remotes all are pieces of ****, I love the dual shock more than any controller, but i have always bought the ones the break on you!! it actually ****es me right off. But hey its only 50 bucks, it only takes me a whole day to make that kind of money.
Im not crying because i can only plug up 4 remotes to my ps4 but more of "will this piece of **** break on me"
@Jaz007
Bomberman Blast on Wii supported 8-player local play using 4 Wiimotes and 4 Gamecube controllers.
Don't care I'm not even getting 4 controllers
games that I played on PS3 local with 5 and more players at a time, Bomberman, X-Men Arcade, WWE games. I'm sure sports game supported it, Always had big groups for Rock Band. but that was on X-box.
Geeze, why are so many people on here so anti-social locally? and for those that aren't, it's not like friends can't bring their own controllers.
