Knack may not be the most tantalising launch title ever crafted, but it’s got some pretty neat ideas. Arguably its greatest hook is the way in which the eponymous hero can absorb and discard different materials in order to grow and shrink to various sizes. We’ve already seen a couple of these elements in action, including fire and ice. But did you know that the titular star can also suck up metal?
As part of a lengthy PlayStation Blog post on the title, online producer Daniel Brook confirmed the character’s steely state. “[Metal Knack] is very tough and powerful, but is also magnetic,” he explained. “This can lead to some interesting problems.” We suspect that enemies will employ magnets to push and pull the protagonist around the world.
In fact, it sounds like each of the hero’s different states will have a downside. We detailed in a preview earlier in the month that Wooden Knack can be set on fire, while Ice Knack will start to melt – and subsequently shrink – when he steps into the warmth of the sunshine. If developer Japan Studio can use these drawbacks in different ways, it could culminate in some interesting puzzles.
There’s a lot more about the upcoming launch title's narrative through here. Brook promises that a future post will take a deeper look at the adventure’s hastily announced co-op component. I think I will really like this game. That being said, I feel like this is a strong contender for ps+ within 6 months, and I don't view it as a "must have".
Oddly enough, Knack is way more appealing to me than anything the competition has to offer and I'm not even that crazy about platformers - speaking of platformers, I just bought Puppeteer and the Ratchet & Clank Collection.
There are a lot of interesting ideas going into the game and with Japan Studio on the job, I have no doubt that they'll be well implemented. I wonder if there's a Rock Knack and if so, what would his weakness be in that form?
I really want to see what Vampire Knack looks like, especially after seeing how awesome Metal Knack looks.
The simple gameplay has grown on me, to be honest. There are just some things that still bug me about it. For example, I hate the way characters vanish when you've killed them. I hope that's improved before the final release. It's nice to have something a little "different" in the launch lineup all the same.
This game would sell way better if it was in the 40 euros range. However even if I wanted it very much I wouldn't buy since it will surely be in the IGC or discounted.
