It may lack the clarity of its predecessor’s gorgeous OLED screen, but the new PlayStation Vita appears to have done the business for Sony in its home territory. While many feared that it may be overshadowed by the release of Pokémon X and Y, the system still managed to move an impressive 60,166 units. That’s an enormous improvement over its dismal 3,538 units tally the week prior.
In fact, it was a stellar week all around for the Japanese games industry. Even ignoring the success of Nintendo’s flagship portable property, Grand Theft Auto V moved a gigantic 360,115 units on the PlayStation 3, while Tales of Symphonia Chronicles shifted a further 77,228 units. The strong software lineup pushed sales of Sony’s home console up ever so slightly, from 10,232 units to 12,395 units.
Elsewhere, the best selling Vita game was Dangan Ronpa 1.2 Reload, a re-release of Spike Chunsoft’s popular PlayStation Portable visual novels. Meanwhile, SEGA’s sports sim Sakatsuku Pro Soccer Club charted on both the PS3 and the platform holder’s primary handheld, moving 73,696 units and 33,898 units respectively.
We’ve included the full list of hardware and software sales below. It’s nice to see the Vita looking healthier, even if it did get utterly obliterated by the Nintendo 3DS yet again. Let’s hope that the system can maintain its momentum moving forwards – especially now that it’s available in six pretty colours.

Good to hear Vita still fighting its way up with both Monster Hunter 4 and Pokemon X&Y release
That new model is making wonders.
@ErnisDy you mean downgrading lol
I'm sure VK3 will help at least a little. I've been anticipating it; not sure how big the fan base was, but Vita's graphics will help
Nothing beats Pokemon in Japan
I was wondering how the Vita sold so well, figured something must have been up. I forgot all about these.
No word on the New Vita - this thing really needs a new name, thinner , lighter, longer battery life, 1GB onboard storage, LCD vs OLED - in the west? And no 2DS in Japan. Very interesting.
@rjejr No, sadly no word on it. Although, judging by some of the deals in the UK at the moment, I'm not sure how much cheaper the Vita could actually get. They've hit bargain bin prices over here of late. It's pretty mad.
@Epic Just my thought! Its a wonder

@Sanquine My only concern is that this numbers will kinda decrease overtime after all the launch date of a new system will always be the peak with the exception of huge price drops.
@get2sammyb - "It's pretty mad."
I think I'm going mad trying to keep track of all the videogame news honestly. EU/US/Japan, handhelds and home consoles and the micro-consoles. Things were much simpler 3 or 4 years ago.
it shows there is still life and interest which is great news. But now they need the games to keep it going. With MH4 and XY,on 3DS that is a challenge.
I see that the Legend of Heroes series moved to Vita. This is great, I hope we will see more here. XSEED recently announced the 2nd Chapter for PSP and PC. I really enjoy these j-rpg series.
It is good to see more j-rpg games and titles like God Eater 2. They will surely help the Vita. However a port of MH4 would be ideal on the Vita.
hope xseed bring more vita games to the west,bought vk3 already,now waiting for ys ...will support every game that xseed bring over
@Epic What about Ps vita tv launching next month?
Cool seeing Vita do so well, and glad to see Symphonia Chronicles get in the top 5 (can't wait for it to hit the States).
Surprised at GTAV's numbers though, as I didn't think it was that big of a series over there.
@Sanquine I think it could triple this week results but we should also consider that Japanes market tend to prefer handhelds over everything and people will more use it to stream PS4 games than playing Vita games on it.
@Epic It is released in asia Low cost.. I think i will do well I know handheld gamign is big but how can you not say Yes to a 100$ vita
I want it
but I already have a Vita
