Sony has deployed a brand new firmware update for the PlayStation 3 – and this one does a little more than offer operational stability. The system software refresh – which is available now – augments a handful of, er, handy new features, including the ability to auto download updates and purchases made from the PlayStation Webstore.
“Wait a minute,” we hear you scream. “Those were PlayStation Plus perks previously!” Correct. It seems that the platform holder has decided to make the features free in order to bring the current generation console in line with the PlayStation 4. Other improvements include the ability to hide Trophy data – so no one will know that you’ve got the Platinum in Hannah Montana: The Movie – and the option to transfer data between the PS3 and Vita using a Wi-Fi connection.
A pretty useful update overall, then. We’ve just downloaded and installed the file and it took about 10 minutes on an average connection, so make sure that you set aside some time to do that if you don’t have auto updates switched on already. If you spot any other tweaks or improvements, don’t forget to share them in the comments section below.

I should've set my Ps3 to auto-update so then I dont have to do this when I get home from work @get2sammyb Im guessing this is a mandatory update?
@MadchesterManc Yeah, it looks like it.
When did this go live? I DL the B2S demo about 10PM eastern, 3AM UK time and I was never informed like I usually am.
Amazon has only 9 copies of Hanna Montana left in stock! It is very cheaper used here though. I guess lots bought, got the platinum and sold it after.
Even though I have plus I never had auto update on.
@belmont You should turn it on. It's pretty cool and convenient! You also get a summary of what was downloaded and what game saves were uploaded.
I tried to connect my Vita to the PS3 over Wifi (through content manager) but it is still saying that it needs a USB cable. Anyone got any ideas?
I am wondering if the Vita now needs a firmware update too before it works.
@Ginkgo Yeah, I've seen some complaints pertaining to this. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but will give it a go and let you know if I figure anything out.
I will update my console later today.
I haven't noticed any difference since i updated my console last night
@odd69 You have to look closely. Instead of it saying "Playstation Network" on the XMB it now says "PSN". They added privacy settings to the trophies. You have to specifically go to the trophy section to see the change. Maybe it's just me but I don't see the need to hide trophies.
So do Plus folks get something extra for either 3 or 4? Cause that's a bit of a jip. I know we get online multiplayer for 4, but how about some fancy features for all the subscribers jumping gens? Just sayin don't belittle Plus right before...
@charlesnarles Plus subscribers still get early access to betas and demos & free games, so I see no problem.
Anyone else think that the trophy cloaking might be there mainly for something like Lollipop Chainsaw? My friend told me that apparently there was a trophy for trying to look up the main character's skirt. I thought that was hilarious and then I realized I could check friends' trophies and see who had actually done it. In the words of my friend: "I didn't know that would get me a trophy!"
