Weekend wonders

Christmas has passed, and the New Year is here – but that doesn't necessarily mean that the Push Square team has scaled back its PlayStation play time. Once again, we're bringing you the inside scoop on the gaming habits of our writers this weekend, but don't forget, this isn't a one-way affair – so feel free to let us know what you'll be playing by dropping us a comment, too.

In anticipation for the impending Australian Open, I've popped on my John McEnroe-esque headband and dived back into Virtua Tennis 4: World Tour Edition like Dustin Brown. In my opinion, this is still one of the better PlayStation Vita titles, taking full advantage of all of its features and suiting the format down to a tee [Wrong sport – Ed]. I’ll also be painting Los Santos red (literally) in Grand Theft Auto V.

Tales of Xillia has just about taken over my mind by this point – I've put in almost 50 hours since I nabbed a copy for Christmas, and I've just been blown away by how endearing its cast is and how great of a JRPG it is in general. Needless to say, I'll be striving to put an end to the story this weekend. Although in truth, saying goodbye to my hilariously-outfitted friends will no doubt be a heart-wrenching experience.

After practically Plantinum-ing Tearaway last weekend on my Vita (only one Trophy to go – damn you Between the Pages) I've now decided to fully devote my time to Persona 4 Golden, a game which was recently awarded our esteemed Vita Game of the Year award. I'm absolutely hooked. I feel immediately on edge if it's raining or slightly foggy outside, and go to bed at night wondering if I should check the Midnight Channel. When I'm not worrying about saving my friends from a gruesome end, I'm considering whether to attend Basketball or Drama Club, and – oh drat – isn't today my shift at the Day Care Centre?

Jamie O’Neill, Retro Editor

January is traditionally a slow month, but the dust has not settled on the best games from 2013, so I’ll shine a stage light on Puppeteer, and it can play a big part in my weekend. It's a PS3 game with a sprinkling of Kid Chameleon, a dash of Dynamite Headdy, and snippy-snappy Calibrus scissors. Pwaise 2D pantomime platformers boxed with instructions. Pwaise the ninja witch.

This weekend I will be grabbing my spear and heading out into the wilderness on a quest in search of food. Not literally, of course – even if that would be cool. Instead I will be under a blanket in the warmth of my house playing Don't Starve on the PlayStation 4.

With the craziness of the holidays finally out of the way, I will be playing Battlefield 4 on my PS4 all weekend. I already completed the campaign on Hard mode and am aiming to clean up all of the other campaign Trophies. Once that's done, I'll dive into the acclaimed multiplayer that I'm excited to experience. See you all on the 'battlefield'. Corny, I know.

Between work and the start of classes, I know that I won't have too much time for a little while. But I do know that, with the time that I have, I'll be spending as much of it as I can playing Don't Starve on PS4, because it looks great.

This weekend I'll be attempting to clean up my terrifyingly large backlog before we get back into the swing of things for 2014. In other words, I'll be endeavouring to finally – finally – beat Dragon's Crown for Vita, and, if I can find the time, perhaps trying to progress a little further in Need for Speed: Rivals. Oh, and Spelunky for Vita, of course – because I haven't stopped playing that game since it released.

Hopefully this weekend will be spent fighting my way up the ranks in Battlefield 4 multiplayer. Connectivity has been so hit and miss since launch that it's been a frustrating experience, with more time spent looking at menus than spraying virtual lead in actual games. The fact that I continue this abusive relationship speaks volumes for the enjoyment that I get when it does work. Though just when I think that it's fixed, it wipes my campaign progress for the third time, and refuses to let me connect to any servers. Battlefield 4, I just can't quit you – even though I know that I should.

Thanks to PlayStation Plus, I'm going to spend most of my time braving the harsh, cold world of Don't Starve this weekend – and I'll probably end up dying a lot. Other than that, I think a little bit of co-op in Borderlands 2 and Battlefield 4 multiplayer will be nice on the side as well.

Alright, enough of that – now it's your turn. Be it home console or handheld gaming, let us know what you'll be playing this weekend by leaving us a comment in the interactive white space below.
