It’s that time of the year where we find ourselves bombarded with terrible Hugh Grant romantic comedies, overpriced chocolate shapes, and vomit-inducing teddy bears holding twee little love hearts. But just because it’s the ideal day to showcase your soppy side, that doesn’t mean that your games can’t join in on the festivities, too. With real relationships being a little more grounded than an overpriced gift card, though, we’ve compiled a list of PlayStation 3 titles that tackle love in a manner that isn’t all rainbows and roses. The big question is: which of these would you pick to be your Valentine?
Catherine
A title more about temptation than ‘til death do us part, choosing to be loyal to your fiancée Katherine or fall for new gal Catherine will leave you with the most brain busting nightmares imaginable. And even if you don’t find yourself dead in the morning, you may wish that you were, as life continues to throw curve balls in your direction that you’re just not ready to catch. At least there’s always a nice warm pepperoni pizza awaiting you at the end of a hard day.
Heavy Rain
Even in the deepest depths of despair, true romance can bloom. Dowdy dad Ethan Mars may have lost his son to the Origami Killer, but a chance encounter with reporter Madison Paige brings some welcome respite. While a few rounds in a motel bedroom help to cope with the emotional anguish, though, you’ll need to push on for the happy ending on the horizon. After all, one wrong move can shatter this blissful daydream and turn it into a living nightmare.
ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection
Like a sleazy supermarket sale, this romantic bundle gives you two for the price of one. While ICO will find you fighting demons to save the life of a snowy spirit, Shadow of the Colossus will see you dismantling beasts the size of skyscrapers to bring a loved one’s life back. We’d argue that it’s better to have loved and lost than never loved at all, but regardless of which adventure you pick here, you can be sure that you’ll be watching the credits with tears in your eyes.
Rain
Love doesn’t always batter you over the head with a Hello Kitty plushy, as it can sometimes be as vague as our heroes in PlayStation Network download Rain. This soggy excursion may start out with a simplistic knight in shining armour premise, but it quickly recounts the touching tale of two lost souls stuck under a dark cloud. You must work with your new-found friend to find cover from the downpour, and unlock the sunshine in your burgeoning relationship as a consequence.
Valkyria Chronicles
Love is a battlefield for poor Welkin and Alicia in Valkyria Chronicles. With their ransacked hometown caught in the middle of a political war, a military squad unites them. There may be very little time to smooch amid the heat of incessant gunfire, but this underrated tactical role-playing game brings new meaning to “through sickness and in health”. If you want to see their journey through to the very end, Valkyria Chronicles 2 has your soppy desires covered.

I'd go out with Catherine in a second, as long as she doesn't force me to complete aggravating block puzzles.
Thanks for reminding me about Valentie's day. I completely forgot lol. I would have to pick Ico/SotC. SotC is such a great game, I need to replay one day. I think I need to more of the meaning out of it since I don't think I really paid enough attention the first time. Same goes for Ico.
@ShogunRok Catherine is amazing, apart from when it becomes an actual video game. I also think it falls apart at the end. Hence my vote goes for ICO - the only game to make holding hands an effective mechanic. Fumito Ueda you genius!
I've been looking at buying Catherine in the near future. Looks like a pretty decent and original game.
@RyoHazuki I'd say it's certainly worth playing. If you don't like puzzle games, though, I'd put it on Easy.
I have always wanted to play Catherine but I hate Puzzles.
The bane of Catherine is really how hard the puzzles can get. I was actually a good girl and didn't hit on Madison in Heavy Rain either. I must say that Rain really did surprise me by being a lot deeper than it first lets one.
Valkyrie chronicles! Only stupid thing is welkin doesn't know when a lady wants him..
@get2sammyb definitely plan on playing it but having 3 systems where as before I had just 1my backlog is swelling. Not massively into puzzlers but then I generally put games on easy unless I plan on wasting stupid amounts of time poking my nose in every nook of gameplay.
Tough call between Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection and Rain, both have such a beautiful, yet melancholic tone to them.
@Sanquine I just got VC recently, and it's super amazing so far (ch 4). Yeah, a gentleman like him wouldn't think himself worthy. He's a noob like that :' )
Catherine was a game that really went far beyond what I expected of it.
Loved it to pieces.
I haven't played any of these 5 games, though I do plan on owning Heavy Rain eventually.
