Forget about the fight between the Helghast and the ISA, as the so-called console war is undeniably the biggest brawl in gaming. And in a strange twist of fate, Sony Pictures could be producing a movie inspired by the neverending skirmish, charting SEGA’s assault on Nintendo in the early to mid 1990s. We don’t know about you, but we’re already booking our tickets.
The forthcoming flick is supposedly based upon Blake Harris’ "behind-the-scenes business thriller", er, Console Wars, which “draws upon hundreds of interviews to create the first full account” of the colossal corporate battle. The film will apparently be written and directed by Superbad scribes Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, with the abovementioned author serving as an executive producer.
While specific details are hazy, proceedings appear to have been in the works for some time, as the Japanese giant registered a slew of related domain names way back in 2012. Still, assuming that it does actually happen, we reckon that the makers should get Michael Bay involved – after all, who else would be able to accurately depict the brutal battle between Mode 7 and Blast Processing?

Best case scenario: people start buying more video games and consoles from hype. Worst case scenario: it could make video games a laughing stock, thanks to Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg being behind the movie. I hope they at least take the subject seriously, which is HIGHLY doubtful with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg anywhere near them.
As long as Uwe Boll stays out of it, it could be an pretty good film.
lol wut?
Weirdness: Sony May Be Making a Movie Adaption of Hyperdimension Neptunia
Fixed!
Anyway I really enjoyed SEGA games back in the 90's. Too bad they are out of hardware business.
This will be funny cannot wait to see it if it happens, still waiting for the Bioshock movie more of a creepy horror. But this should be more of a animated movie, with Nintendo as the evil overload trying to enslave kids with there console, and killing off SEGA people fear all hope is lost. Sony seen as the underdog, obviously saves everyone and sends Nintendo back into the abyss.
@banacheck Well movies often rewrite history so I wouldn't be surprised if what you wrote became the film.
Hopefully it'll just be a straight forward documentary about the 16-bit console war, still the best generation. Not a fan of Seth Rogan at all (bar in Paul) but I seem to remember reading he's a really keen gamer and his age would imply he was gaming in that generation too so hopefully he'll just be a name in the credits or the narrator rather than it being an actual live action film.
This sounds stupid.
@WickedKnightAl What about this sounds stupid to you?
@DaftPlayStation Nintendo pretty much slaughtered Sega overall. They held a pretty strong market-share in the U.S, but they couldn't maintain it for longer than a generation, and never really left the underdog space. If anything, it was the media who really played up the scale of that particular console war, making Sega out to be some kind of threat.
It was the PS2 who dealt the killing blow to Sega in the end. Sounds pretty anticlimactic to me. Hardware makers always die with a whimper, not a grand finish. Trying to turn a business rivalry into something more epic than it really was is stupid.
I can imahine this as either a comedy where it is 80% focused on Sega excutives trying to take down Nintendo or a serious drama like Moneyball where it is a little more evenly divided. They'll probably try to combine yhe 2 and it 2ont work well as a general audience movie but could be good for those interested like us.
@WickedKnightAl So what if is anticlimactic I still think the movie might be fun and entertaining besides Movies are not suppose to be a history lesson anyway it doesn't matter if the movie is 100% accurate or not all that matters is if the movie is accurate enough and most importantly if the movie is good and if people want to know the real story then they should go look it up and learn about what really happened themselves
@rjejr Most likely it will probably be a comedy slash drama (a draamedy) either way I'm very interested in this and i can't wait to see it hope it gat's maid
If this ends up happening I have a hard time believing it will turn out well. Especially given the people involved.
