This particular editor may have been lost at sea and unable to steer the ‘What Are You Playing This Weekend’ ship last time around, but dry land is once again beneath your humble host’s feet, and so normal service has resumed. Not that replacement Robert Ramsey did a bad job – he actually remembered to contact the rest of the team, which is one step better than this forgetful scribe. Still, we’re sure that you’ll agree that this feature is at its absolute best when it’s hastily compiled on a Saturday evening. Right?

The upswell of positive impressions surrounding dour World War I sidescroller Valiant Hearts: The Great War convinced me to pick up the indie-inspired Ubisoft adventure this week, and in between cries of ‘there’s something in my eye’, I’m having a fascinating time with this harrowing historical affair.

Trying to find a solid team in Killzone: Shadow Fall - Intercept is like trying to buy a decent bunch of strawberries after 12PM in the summer – it doesn't happen very often. And when it does, you'll probably have to act as the cream and hold the whole squad together. It's not easy being an elite VSA trooper, but the PlayStation 4 shooter's co-op expansion proves to be a bloody good time if you can get a bunch of friends together, which is what I hope is going to happen this weekend.

Now this may sound blasphemous coming from someone that works on a PlayStation site, but I've never finished a Metal Gear Solid title – until now. In the wake of the incredible E3 gameplay footage for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, I've powered through Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty in the past week, and I'm a few hours into Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Why Raiden? Will ‘la le li lo lu’ ever not be funny? I'm looking forward to discovering the answers to these questions and more as I continue my Kojima-themed quest this weekend.

I'm hoping to have a quick blast on R-Type Final on my PlayStation 2 if I get the chance this weekend. I really enjoyed Irem's shmup during its original release in 2004, and I may also have a flick through the game's cover feature in GamesTM Issue 6, because I doubt that a modern multiformat magazine would be able to dedicate a cover to a new R-Type title today.

This weekend, I'll be attempting to clear out as many of my unplayed PlayStation Plus freebies as I possibly can. There's a AAA storm coming, so it's imperative that I get as many of these smaller experiences out of the way before they get swept aside. In particular, I want to attempt to topple both Strider and PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate.

With my sprog staying at the grandparent's for the weekend, I can finally get a proper weekend of gaming in. With Tales of Xillia 2 looming around the corner, I plan to put a massive dent into Tales of Symphonia Chronicles. On the side, I'll finish off with a hard run of Metal Gear Rising: Revengence before it’s sacrificed for my PS4 fund.

After finally finishing Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, I've been able to break the seal on my next PlayStation Vita game. While I'm less than an hour into Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars, I have to admit that the frequent innuendo and bizarre setup hasn't quite clicked with me yet. Hopefully this will change over the weekend, though it may prove hard when the game constantly refers to the player as 'God's Gift' while exhibiting a severe case of male wish fulfilment.

I'm going to dig into ConstantC, which I hadn't been able to play until now, and hope that it delivers. I also need to finish up my Alan Wake series playthrough, which I haven't done in a while, and like to do every once in a while. [Who is this ‘Alan Wake’ that you speak of, Graham? – Ed]

This weekend, I'll be exploring the alternate reality of 1960 and blasting away Nazis and robots in Wolfenstein: The New Order. So far, the game is rock solid and breathes some fresh air into the first-person shooter genre by bringing some old-school elements into a new age. Once the campaign's done, I'll be going for the Platinum Trophy for sure.

I've finally got through some of my backlog, and that means that I can start Beyond: Two Souls. I've already spent my first two hours getting poor Jodie drunk, stoned, and snogged, and I'm excited to see what opportunities for mischief might come up next. When I've swallowed as much of David Cage's melodrama as I can stomach, I'll be turning to Final Fantasy X-2 – after all, girl bands and massage mini-games should prove the ultimate antidote to Ellen Page’s long, brooding looks into the camera.

With Valiant Hearts: The Great War winning our Game of the Month award for June, I thought that I would give it a play this weekend – I do love a good emotional story. I will also be heading back to Resogun with the new Heroes DLC. It's going to be a good weekend.
