As has become a frighteningly frequent occurrence of late, Sony’s decided to run some mandatory maintenance on the PlayStation Network – during a Bank Holiday weekend. Those of you living in the UK will probably be looking forward to a full three days away from work right now, but you may not be able to engage in as much gaming as you’d like on Monday night, as the Japanese giant’s decided to faff about with its servers while you waste your free time elsewhere.
The downtime is set to start at 17:40PM BST on Monday, 25th August and will run right the way through until 00:50PM BST on Tuesday, 26th August – pretty much bed time for most, we reckon. During this time you won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store, Account Management, and more. You will be able to play online, however, as long as you log in before the maintenance begins. You may want to make yourself some kind of reminder, then.
Asked why this keeps occurring, one of PlayStation’s community support assistants pointed out that any maintenance always occurs on a Monday, which is just plain bad luck for UK Bank Holidays. All the same, you’d think that the organisation could run these checks overnight or something; we appreciate that it’s always peak time somewhere in the world, but this has happened way too many times now. It’s unacceptable, really.

It only does everything.
Good going Sony.
They're doing this on purpose. LOL
@get2sammyb you cant last 7 hours without accessing the ps store or account management? i forgot i spent £350 to sit on the store.......
@TOMBOY25 Of course, I just think it's ridiculous that this keeps happening. Is it the end of the world? No, far from it. But literally every Bank Holiday they do this.
@get2sammyb But it doesn't restrict the ability to play online so i can't really see the issue even if its every bank holiday.
3 days off? I work in a supermarket mate we don't get these days off
Always with the bank holidays!
Of all the possible days why do they keep doing it when most people are off.
If you can still play online, there isn't a problem then.
I'm with @TOMBOY25 on this. It's a non issue these days. Its hardly unacceptable that you won't be able to browse the online store on a day it doesn't refresh anyway. Remember the old days when you couldn't access the PSN at all during maintenance....
No prob for me I don't even play online.
Bank holiday? Never heard of that before. TIL I guess.
And yeah as long as you can play online, it should be fine imo.
I'll be sure to pre-load inFamous: First Light on the 24th before the maintenance.
@Dohv What!? You're missing out big time, if you haven't played MGS4 online or Uncharted 2. I think I'll hang my head in shame.
@Punished_Boss I played those games online. But in the recent years I've been all about single player story driven cinematic games. Not into online any more it got old.
@Dohv Oh good, good. My faith in you has restored!
What about the people that have paid for a premium account to games like War Thunder? When Gaijin take the game servers down for maintenance the time gets added onto premium accounts. When Sony take down PSN people with premium accounts get shafted. PSN is a premium service run by amateurs.
@voodoo341 so you have a premium account on War Thunder or are you just trolling again? you can still go online during the maintenance. The PSN servers aren't taken down, Sony are just doing maintenance making the store & account management unavailable so you can still go online. If your unable to use your premium account on say War Thunder during this time, then it's a Gaijin server issue
@MadchesterManc I had a premium account with War Thunder and lost access during every single PSN maintenance. That's entirely Sony's fault.
@voodoo341 I think that's a little unfair. Even MMOs with monthly charges have maintenance periods. Personally, I just find the timing of this irritating. I totally agree with @Tomboy25 and @MadchesterManc that it's not really the end of the world, though.
@get2sammyb you've failed to see my point. When War Thunder is taken down by Gaijin my premium account had the time lost added back onto my subscription. When PSN is taken down and I can't log on my account Sony did nothing. That's not being unfair it's a fact. A premium subscription to War Thunder isn't cheap and for a company that preaches about offering value it's nothing short of a rip off.
Lovely jubbly. Think I'll do a bit of hiking or sightseeing to break up weekly routine of work and gaming. It better be back on at midnight tho!!!
Meh! My tv broke so won't be able to play this week anyways. LoL!
@voodoo341 I agree.
Guess they figure Bank holiday matters less that weekend over Labor Day the following.
Voodoo spins things as much as Sony's PR spin.
Shame...
4 the Gamers, but not at Bank Holiday
Srsly u guies, UK =/= world, you're the only one having holidays on Mondays :/
@get2sammyb As someone living in America, i have never heard of Bank Holiday, what is it? is it the equivalent of Japans Golden Week? (Thank you Anime and Persona for teaching me about Golden Week lol)
@Alpha It's just a public holiday.
This certainly isn't the end of the world. Having said that, this kind of thing is something I'd like the fee-paying masses to take up with Sony. I think that any company as large as Sony should not be encouraged to continue with this frequency of disruption given that we are now paying for multiplayer via PS+. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want Sony to be crippled by people complaining but I think a little bit of constructive criticism might give them the incentive to improve the service's availability.
@Punished_Boss meh I hate online games, with very rare exceptions. To be honest I own uncharted 2 but have not even played it because it has an online mode (and likely never will play it), as as much as I like MGS, I won't play any version that includes an online mode. Online gaming is not fun, and being forced to play a single player game online to get a platinum angers me.
@thedevilsjester I think a little part of me just died
@thedevilsjester you're crazy dude. Lol. "Online gaming is not fun" do you realize how crazy of a statement that is? Pretty sure the 80+million people who play online might disagree haha.. I mean come on online includes Co op gaming, competitive multiplayer gaming, mmos and more.. I understand you enjoy single player. I love single player games as well, but to only limit yourself to those kinds of games is doing yourself a great disservice ! I just actually finished playing titan fall a few mins ago, and last night was diablo 3 ultimate edition coop with 2 of my friends.. some of the most fun I'll ever have gaming is with friends.
@Punished_Boss haha.. me too man, me too.
Everyone chill, take the day off and go to Notting Hill Carnival. That is of course if you're in the southern half of the UK...
Wait, online gaming isn't affected?! False alarm all, stay at home and play gaemz!
@Punished_Boss @mitcHELLspawn I have no interest in playing a game with other (random-ish) players, it does not provide any extra enjoyment and in fact more often than not detracts from enjoyment I would otherwise get. To top this off most multiplayer aspects of games are half-assed, thrown together by interns or otherwise generic cookie cutter FPS online play. Even the games that have unique and enjoyable multiplayer aspects like AC, are filled with nothing but asshats, or the super elite that do nothing but play this game all day and known exactly how you should play it, and love to tell you this. The normal, just playing for fun, and not an asshat, players are few and far between and not worth sitting through the crap. No thank you.
@thedevilsjester wow... I disagree so strongly with that ENTIRE comment that I don't think there's any point in even typing out a rebuttal. What your comment does tell me though is that you obviously have not played the great multiplayer games in a long time because your opinion of them are so completely incorrect as to what the multiplayer gaming space is like it's crazy. I've met so many awesome guys and girls over multiplayer games it's crazy, some of which I've been gaming with since 2006. Of course there is always going to be some bad apples.. but in general I've met so many kind, cool people while playing online and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
@thedevilsjester You're intensifying my feelings at @37 You're missing out big time, i can see where you're coming from but still...
Whatever floats your boat.
It'll be back on soon.
