Nidhogg is an intensely competitive fence-'em-up, which has been around on the PC for a while now. It's already been confirmed for the PS4, which we're very excited about, but now that excitement has doubled – the developers at Messhof have announced that it's on its way to the PlayStation Vita as well. And that's not all: it'll also be a cross-buy title, which means that you'll get both the PS4 and the Vita versions for a single price. Goody – we love a bit of cross-buy here at Push Square.
A regular fixture at gaming events the world over, the title sees you locked in an intense fencing battle. Using authentically meaty audio and cleverly subtle visual cues, the game's combat feels impressively kinetic and physical – especially for a game with such simple-looking visuals. It's definitely one to look forward to.
However, our major concern with Nidhogg on a handheld is the multiplayer aspect; with a single player component that's essentially little more than a training mode, the game excels with human opponents. But while we're still convinced that the PS4 will prove a far more natural fit for the game, the studio has gone some way to address our worries with the Vita outing.
First things first, Vita players can play with others on the PS4, meaning that you're far less likely to run out of online opponents. But what about our local multiplayer fix, or when you have no Wi-Fi access? Well, two Vita users in close proximity will be able to duel one another with ad-hoc connectivity. Plus, bizarrely, two players can fight on a single handheld: one player takes the left stick, while the other takes the right.
We're not sure how that will work exactly, but it sounds intriguing at the very least. And, with it being cross-buy, there's little reason not to try Nidhogg on the move. Will any of you be giving this one a go? Are you interested in Nidhogg on a portable? Let us know in the comments below.
