Series creator Hideo Kojima may like popping up during Microsoft press conferences, but Metal Gear Solid will always belong on PlayStation platforms. As part of Konami’s latest financial report, the publisher has revealed that Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes sold three times as much on the PlayStation 4 than the Xbox One during the previous quarter. No major surprise, huh?
In truth, the information is a teensy bit shaky, seeing as the game launched in mid-March, and this statistic depicts data from April through June. However, the split was similar during the publisher’s previous fiscal year, with the PS4 making up eight per cent of the Castlevania company’s total software sales compared to three per cent on the Xbox One. It’s worth noting that the prelude to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the only next-gen title released by the firm thus far.
The strong sales appear to have had an impact on the publisher’s allegiance, too, as the latest trailer for the abovementioned sequel bucked recent trends and actually appeared during Sony’s media briefing at E3 this year. We wouldn’t be surprised if that association continued right through until release.

i think kojima revealing phantom pain at microsofts E3(?) last year was just to ease xbox players hopes of mgs being playable on their console, MGS will always be tied to Playstation
It's so sad that this series is no longer exclusive to Sony. If there's ever been a series that I associate with the PlayStation brand it's this one. I'll never forget the impact that Metal Gear Solid had on the industry back when I was a kid.
@Diddy_kong Just out of curiosity: why is it a problem for you that MGS isn't exclusive anymore? It's not that it's a less excellent game for also being available on Xbox?
But indeed, the sweet memories of MGS on PS1...I was blown away by the game back then. Still has a special place in my heart until today.
And Konami might sell one more MGS V GZ...now that it's for sale one the PSN store for 15,- €, I'm heavily tempted.
For those of you who are European and didn't know yet, GZ for PS4 is on sale atm on PSN. €15 for plus members.
@Diddy_kong I remember hearing somewhere that MGS4 wasn't profitable because it was a PS3 exclusive. It's probably a move by Konami rather than Kojima to make it multi-plat. What puzzles me is why they won't put this on the Wii U as well. Nothing against the Fox Engine, but it doesn't look like it's beyond the Wii Us capabilities. After all, whatever the 360 can do: The Wii U can do much better.
I'm just hoping for GameCube titles on the Virtual Console so I can hopefully play The Twin Snakes again.
I think it's very interesting seeing the figures for this specific game. I've spent countless hours playing the MGS series and the first one is one of my favourite games of all time. I suspect that the PlayStation community in general are more attracted to this type of game. Mind you, I have no problem whatsoever with it not being exclusive to PlayStation as I'm happy for the legend that is Kojima to make money wherever possible as long as that iconic experience is maintained on PlayStation versions.
to me pressure sensitive buttons didn't do a thing for me and it was hardly ever used to the point it was rather pointless.
@Reverend_Skeeve
Hey man,
I think "problem" might be too strong a word. Trust me, I do not think that it's any less of an excellent game simply because it's also available on Microsoft platforms. But I think that anytime a console has a triple-A exclusive to its name it's a big deal for that console. As somebody who chooses to support Sony I think it's too bad that the series is no longer exclusive to them, considering that the MGS series got its start on the original PlayStation. It'd be like if the next God of War came out on both the PS4 and X1 – I would be sad that Sony lost the exclusivity to that series as well. Or if Mario games started coming out on everything. Does this answer your question??
Anyways, I hope my original comment didn't get blown out of portion. I'm not anti-Xbox or anything (I even own a 360), I just happen to prefer to play my third-party games on PlayStations. We just like what we like, but a great game is a great game regardless of the system we choose to play it on.
@Shaolin
Well said.
I always associate mgs with playstation even though I also played it on xbox and Nintendo over the years. Still hoping for a HD collection for wii u including twin snakes.
