PS4 TGS Absentees

In many ways, this year’s Tokyo Game Show was a haven for long overdue titles. Final Fantasy XV is perhaps the biggest one, securing a new trailer, lengthy gameplay demonstration, and the promise of a demo in the not too distant future. However, other protracted productions such as Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Deep Down put in appearances, serving as much needed reminders that they’re still very much on the way. Unfortunately, the same wasn’t true for a handful of other releases – which we’ve included below.

The Last Guardian

We were warned. Speaking at Gamescom earlier in the year, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida mentioned that, while the game still exists, The Last Guardian would not put in an appearance at this year’s TGS. “I cannot confirm any timing because we are waiting for it to be in a state where we are happy that this is the game,” he explained, suggesting perhaps that it’s been re-worked since the last time that we saw it.

Still, many had hoped that this was merely a ruse, and that the title would receive a new trailer all the same. Unfortunately, the show has now closed with very little new information to share. Speaking with Famitsu magazine, the above executive did state that the firm’s continuing to develop the game with real tenacity, but it still has nothing to show. It’s now been seven years since we first heard about the release. Incredible.

Hot Shots Golf PS4

Alright, this technically just got announced, so maybe we’re stretching the definition of ‘dormant’ a little too far in order to create some kind of filler feature [Rumbled – Ed], but we were genuinely expecting a lot more information on the reasonably recently revealed Hot Shots Golf for the PS4 at TGS. The title was described, for example, as an open world adaptation of the traditional links loving series – so how will that work?

Previous editions have included virtual world-esque club houses for you to interact with other avatars in, so we’re guessing that this will blow the whole concept wide open, adopting a Destiny style MMO-lite type of structure. That would perhaps explain why it’s taking Clap Hanz so long to develop the game, as it’s been almost three years since the last entry in the franchise, and the team’s only made a PlayStation 3 port in the interim.

Gravity Rush 2

Gravity Rush 2

Cryptically announced during last year’s TGS as part of a trailer playing at Sony’s booth, it’s felt like an age since we last heard anything about Gravity Rush 2. While protagonist Kat doesn’t have quite the same cachet as other PlayStation heroes yet, there’s a real sense that she could become the next Sackboy or Nathan Drake, so it’s a real shame to see the series all but fall off the radar at this year’s event.

Creative director Keiichirō Toyama noted earlier in the year that the game’s gone into full production, so we reckon that its absence is down to a change in format. It was originally assumed that the title would be made for the PlayStation Vita, but Sony recently noted that it won’t be making any further big budget exclusives for the handheld. While we’re not sure whether that statement extends to Japan Studio, we wouldn’t be surprised if this project got switched to the PS4.

Were there any other announced titles that skipped TGS entirely? Which of the above releases were you most hoping to see? Act all impatient in the comments section below.
