It may seem like Sony’s placed the PlayStation Vita in a bag of rocks and tossed it in the Thames, but SCEUK boss Fergal Gara insists that that’s not the case. Despite the portable device failing to appear during the format holder’s E3 and Gamescom press conferences, the company insists that the console will not fade away – but it won’t be receiving any more first-party blockbusters either.
“We will certainly not be ignoring it this Christmas,” the outspoken executive said of the handheld in an interview with Eurogamer.net. "We're very pleased with how it continues to sell, and look forward to another big, seasonal spike at Christmas. There's a perception that it's fading away. I can absolutely assure you that that's not happening – it’s proving remarkably resilient.”
Of course, the system’s retail presence tells a different story, so what does the affable gaffer actually mean? “It's just found its niche,” he continued. “It's not the biggest niche in the world [...] but for those who want that more specialist device and a more specialist experience, it does a damn good job, and therefore it trucks along quite nicely."
And according to Gara, the likes of Minecraft – should it ever see the light of day – and LEGO Batman 3 will help maintain that steady momentum. Sadly, you won’t be seeing many more colossal first-party blockbusters from the platform holder itself. “What we are excited by is the number of games that we can take to the platform that have been created for other platforms,” he curiously declared.
In the West, then, the Vita’s future is all about ports, kids’ games, and indie titles. With strong support still coming from Japan, though, that’s not entirely as bad as it sounds. And while it’s a shame to see the system fall seriously short of its full potential, we’re still having a great time with our machine. The question is: do you share our optimistic outlook?

"but it won’t be receiving any more first-party blockbusters either"
Is cutting its wings off and giving it half hearted support really much better, I mean those Lego games are just 3DS ports that in some cases look like DS/GBA games.
That to me is a bigger crime/injustice then just killing the console.
@Jazzer94 I agree, but I think if you look specifically at the PS Store, there's a seemingly never-ending stream of good stuff. I've been playing Rogue Legacy, Velocity 2X, and CounterSpy lately, and I really like them all. They're not exactly what was promised when the platform was announced, but I'd actually argue that they suit the device better than an Assassin's Creed game or whatever.
That's just my opinion, though. And, of course, it would be better if there was a mix of the blockbusters and downloadable stuff, absolutely!
It really bothers me that they do their best to make it sound like indies is all there is to Vita, would it kill them to mention Hyperdimension Neptunia or Hatusune Miku or Sword Art Online or any Japanese game other than Tales of Hearts which Sony executive seem to believe is the only Japanese title coming to Vita
Resilient in spite of Sony. Its felt like non stop crimbo on the vita instant game collection too, not so much recently. I'm happy with the content, I'm not happy with the lack of western support or the lack of marketing. They obviously think streaming ps4/ps3 titles is the future.
Too late. Not only has it faded away in society, in conferences, in marketing but it also has faded away from websites. The second and third is where the irony really kicks in. Minecraft could have saved Vita, but Sony knew this and didn't bundle it with a green themed Vita. Failing to acknowledge Freedom Wars or the undated Oreshika in the interview says it all.
@get2sammyb And I enjoy those kinds of games, but whenever I read these corporate guys it just seems like they don't understand the balance required for an excellent library that will entice people who don't own the device yet.
To play blockbuster games, we will all have to stream them from a PS4. I believe you can do this outside as long as your PS4 is on at home and you can connect thru a strong wifi network, am I correct? I'm happy with the Japanese support and ports as I never got a chance to play them on PS3. There's not a lot of money nor time for games and I believe that the PS Vita already excels in delivering top-quality games. I don't need another reason to lose more money, such as buying blockbuster games. We can already acknowledge it's not as powerful as PS3 (b/c of lag and scale-backs in Borderlands 2) so why should devs care to scale back their PS4 releases for a system with a smaller user base? That takes too much effort for little reward, in their eyes.
@ollietaro I usually stream via 4G tethering with my phone, don't use it often though
@get2sammyb I completely agree. Out of all the games on my vita, uncharted and killzone have received the least amount of attention from me, they just don't feel right on a handheld imo. I love the little games I can grab for it, and best of all, the software pricing is really competitive.
@Jazzer94 I think they do understand, I just think they also realise that that money's better invested in the PS4 now, which actually has a very profitable trajectory mapped out for it. It's a shame for us that are big fans of the Vita, but corporate realities sadly come into play, too.
@get2sammyb I agree there s lots of good stuff coming..
I think you missed that one on this site

@get2sammyb Yes, the best we can hope for is that they keep releasing Vuta versions of smaller PS4 games with crossbuy. Im think thats what will happen with Gravity Rush 2. I also wouldnt be surprised to see Gravity Rush 1 re released on ps4 much like Tearaway Unfolded. We will see at TGS
look at all the awesome games for Vita in TGS... Nobody buy Vita in the west... can't blame for the lack of western game for Vita. it's a business for profit after all...
@Punished_Boss Lol
Sony isn't talking about the PlayStation TV anymore either. What I need to know is if the Dualshock 4 touchpad will work so every Vita game can be played on the PSTV, if so I'll get one.
@Dohv - "PlayStation TV"
Due in a month (Oct 14th in the US) and it's barely out there. And I think changing the name from Vita TV to PS TV means they aren't going to make much of an effort to "port" Vita games to it, though I'm sure they'll patch in DS4 support.
I think Sony will keep selling Vita - people will continue to buy it for PS4 remote play - but they won't be promoting it much. Apple still sells Apple TV (the set top box, not an actual Apple TV that they've been working on for 5 years) but how much news coverage does that get compared to iPhone, iPad, iPods and Macs?
I love how he says "We will certainly not be ignoring it this Christmas." So you admit you have been and will be ignoring it the rest of the year? This is whole thing with Vita support is such an immature way to admit failure- dramatically lowering your standards because you were too lazy to put forth the effort you promised. Grow up, Sony. You're 68 years old!
To be honest this year I think the VITA line up of games has been/will be pretty strong, yeah not all are AAA but that doesn't stop them been great games. Some of the best games aren't AAA just remember that.
I just hope they don't cancel Gravity Rush 2 or make it a PS4 exclusive. I mean, I'm fine if they bring it to PS4, but I don't want it to be canceled for Vita
@get2sammyb
When you can get Rogue Legacy or Counterspy, for example, for your PS3/PS4, why would you buy them for Vita?
When a company creates a handheld, then openly says it won't make any more big retail games for said handheld bc of low sales (even though it's that company's fault it isn't selling well bc of mind blowingly stupid decisions), then that handheld is.....dead.
Just my opinion. It is a shame, bc the Vita is an amazing piece of hardware & had so much potential.
@whywai88 I agree its true too it works both way top games -> more sells -> top games.
@Godsire some think Vita needs Vita exclusive games to sell but you can still prefer playing a game on Vita even if the same game is on console
I finally bought a Vita last week - after months of downloading the free PS Plus games for it I felt like I was losing money by NOT having one... Best purchase I made in a long time. Enjoying the likes of Uncharted and Gravity Rush as much as Guacamelee and Hotline Miami. Somehow indies feel more at home on Vita but likewise it's fun playing games like UC that show off its graphical grunt. Great hardware and great games. Also tempted to get some PSone classics as the the lo-res blockiness doesn't feel as gratingly backwards as it does on a big screen via PS3. Seriously, though, Sony should make more of the fact you can build the IGC for Vita before you get the console!
Great site by the way - good work!
@Godsire- it's because some games especially Indies feel more at home on vita, for example I played hotline miami on ps3 but it plays so much better on the VITA, there will always be gamers who prefer console over handheld and vice versa, like me I prefer handheld I'd much rather play borderlands 2 on vita rather than on my ps3 oh and also vita is more convenient for a 'hectic lifestyles' as you can have a short gaming burst then when kids start playing up etc you can just put it straight into standby and continue playing later be it same day or even days later!
@Morrowbie it's a great piece of kit you won't regret buying
@Morrowbie check out the PSP games too
I think the main problem is most people dont even know what games are on Vita as most are in PSstore they should advertise them specially PS+ or find a way to bring all those small games on retail.
Also big budget game means expensive but does not mean good game.
@N711 Good idea, I never had a PSP - and that massively increases the pool of AAA titles I can play on Vita. Digitally it has to be said it has incredibly good backwards-compatibility.
@danny2kd I agree that the suspend feature is very useful with kids around!
Right, why are we better spokespeople for Vita than anyone at Sony? They have the communication all wrong for this product (like Ninty and the WiiU).
The vita is long gone. I think Sony is just making it worse producing a system they aren't even going to support. A lot of people won't buy another handheld from them again knowing how they supported the vita.
I'm so happy with my 3G PSVita, I bought a second one just in case.
@Morrowbie It is weird that we are selling the thing for them on word-of-mouth instead of them telling people how good the Vita is.
@Heavyman99 it's after reading comments on sites like this that I decided to get one. I can understand now why Vita owners are so vocal about how great it is - and also why they are so disappointed in the support from Sony (who, conversely, injected PS3 when it was flagging with huge numbers of first-party titles).
On the flip-side, though, Vita got a lot of that early on - Killzone, Uncharted, LBP, etc - before it died down. Now, that reminds me of previous Nintendo consoles I have owned where you get one title from each big franchise then... nothing.
TBH a couple of good 'reworked' games - for instance an improved version of the first Infamous, in light of the IP's new found success on PS4 - might shift a few Vitas and wouldn't take a lot of work for a smaller first party studio.
I still have and love my vita. It's one heck of a device I got there. I once tried to put it back in its box after its "sad death" but frankly I couldn't. Infact I found myself addicted to it more than my PS3. I use it In many ways other than just gaming. if it's not playing Kill Zone or Uncharted Goldern abyss or maybe psone's Crash, It would be socializing with apps like twitter or facebook saving me time to look for my smartphone and posting otherwise. It's wrong for the Vita be treated this way. What will make it for the future of handhelds If the most powerful one of them all fails to make it big in the market?
I for one feel that Sony should give the Vita a fair chance thus by supporting it just as they do on the PS4. The device was'nt there to decide it's fate whether to win or lose. But it lost anyway.
Thankfully my PS4, Wii U and 3DS are alive and well. I'm not really bothered about the fact I never play my Vita anymore, or the fact I've owned my Xbox One for 3 months and still don't own a single game for it. They're just... there. If and when a good game comes along, I own the system. When Freedom Wars finally drops, guess what I own a Vita and can play it. When Halo Masterchief drops, I've got a system to play it on. That's what it's all about for me.
It doesn't have to consistently keep me occupied. I never depend on one platform for my gaining needs. I bought it so that whenever a good game comes along I'll be able to play it. If only five games a year release for it that are worthwhile, so be it. That's five games a year I wouldn't be able to play without it.
@Heavyman99
I don't think its really weird, its just that like most other companies I don't think Sony knows how to market something outside the typical multi-million dollar ad campaign. Thats not really something you can do with games like Persona 4 Golden or Guacamelee.
The other problem is not only is Sony not quite as well known for 1st party game, they don't have as much oomph as Nintendo's either. Sony themselves said only 4/10 of their games sell well, where as Pokemon alone can do 14mil. combined. Most of their big IP aren't as suited for handhelds, they're 'big screen' experiences, where as most of Nintendo's can scale down pretty well (going 2D/2.5D for example). Not knocking them but I think how many people bought a Vita for Uncharted compared to a 3DS for Mario or Zelda speaks for itself. Being a console seller doesn't mean it'll sell handhelds too.
@Zombie_Barioth I was thinking that Sony could run an ad push for the Vita on kid's TV ("Hey! This handheld has the complete Minecraft experience! And also has Terraria, Sly Cooper, LittleBigPlanet, Ratchet and Clank, and moar!") or on Crunchyroll, Hulu, Toonami or Funimation ("Hey! We've got Dagonronpa 1 & 2, Persona 4 Golden, Freedom Wars, Natural Doctrine, Disgaea 3 & 4, and moar!")
@Heavyman99
They could, the problem is if they see making enough of a return on those ads. The other games (besides Freedom Wars) aren't theirs. That price tag gets in the way of selling "kids" games too, nevermind the memory cards. I wouldn't trust my kids with cards that size either, not for what they cost.
They could partner with youtubers, Twitch streamers, ect. They wouldn't demand nearly as much and would still be pretty effective, not to mention appreciate they'd support too.
I'm happy they aren't totally abandoning it and as long as decent ports continue I'm happy enough with it. It has its uses.
Does this mean no Gravity Rush 2?
