There's absolutely no doubt that Destiny is an incredibly smooth and polished first-person shooter: its controls are silky, its aiming is snappy and fast, and its gunplay in general is immensely satisfying. But what if the game adopted a third person viewpoint? What if you could see your Guardian at all times, essentially allowing you to experience the sci-fi blast-'em-up as a third-person shooter?
Of course, you could say the same about any first-person game on the market, but the basis for this particular talking point is built upon the fact that Bungie's latest already makes use of a third-person perspective multiple times. Within the hub-like Tower, you'll be forced into the viewpoint, for example, and even when you're roaming the solar system's various planets, hitting a button on the d-pad launches the camera into third person as your Guardian waves, points, dances, or sits.
This would already suggest that the title could well be playable from such a viewpoint, but the real evidence for a third person camera comes courtesy of one of the release's main story missions. We won't go into detail about the mission here – so there's no need to worry about spoilers – but there is a point where you'll again be forced into third-person, although this time, it's during combat. Judging from this specific task alone, where you're still able to throw grenades, use your super ability, and jump around like a lunatic, you'd think that it wouldn't be too difficult to incorporate the same viewpoint into general gameplay.
Motion sickness is a common issue for some, and an alternative would certainly be welcomed by those affected
That's just in theory, however, and we doubt that it's an easy change to make in reality. Still, we reckon that some gamers would welcome the option. Titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim always allow you to shift from first to third-person when you see fit, and it does tend to add a different feel to the overall game. In Destiny, for instance, we'd quite like to sprint and leap around Mars' sand dunes in third-person, before switching to the eyes of our Guardians in order to rain bullets down on our enemies.
That said, it's really the shooting itself that would throw a spanner in the works. Games like Uncharted and Mass Effect work as third-person shooters largely because of cover mechanics – and there's none of that in Destiny, where you simply pop in and out from behind something large enough to shield your character. Even then, though, you could argue that Bungie's creation is far more focused on movement, and so cover isn't quite as important as it is to our dear Commander Shepard.
The only other thing standing in the way of a third person view is competitive multiplayer. If you're a regular in the Crucible, you'll have probably noticed fellow Guardians standing next to walls or large objects and dancing so that they're able to see around the corner without having to poke their head out, and so the ability to swap from the two different viewpoints even during combat would perhaps make things a little unfair for those who prefer to play in first-person.
Regardless of your own feelings on the matter, there's no doubt that it's quite an interesting subject, especially since the groundwork for a third-person view already seems to be in place. After all, nausea and motion sickness are surprisingly common issues for some when it comes to first-person gaming, and an alternative would certainly be welcomed by those affected. The question is: would you appreciate the addition?

yeah I would
Interesting topic, @ShogunRok - something I'd never really considered. Like you say, I think it would break the game design a little bit, but otherwise I see no reason why the option couldn't at least be included for people that want it. It'd be especially useful for machinima and share videos, etc.
I could see the appeal for 3rd person if you had more options for customising your character with different armour but can swap stats like in DCUO but as it stands I really don't see any need for it
I would try at least the option, I prefer TPS.
@wobrussell In my opinion, if the game was closer to what was promised, there would be more ways to dramatically adapt the look of your Guardian. I'm sure that will come with patches and expansions, though.
I always prefer 3rd over 1st with all games so yes.
The game was actually third person only at one point https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=TsjqTkBsZZE
I'm still sad about the lack of customisation options for my guardian, the kind of thing that would be better showcased in 3rd person. I wouldn't mind that view point being an option, but I'd still play in the first person. I always chose to do so in Skyrim and Fallout, never spent a moment in the 3rd person. I've only played as a hunter so I don't know if/when the other two classes switch perspective, but I find it happening during the special of the Bladedancer sub class to be really jarring. I don't mind it during sparrow rides or the above mentioned story level.
I much prefer 3rd person to FP and I think it mainly boils down to 2 things.
1. Cinematic viewpoint. Can you imagine watching the LotR or Star Wars in FP? Or almost any movie or tv show for that matter. Maybe Memento, but that's about it.
2. Platforming. I can't stand platform jumping in FP games, it's just a pain.
I've played my share of FPs back in the day - Doom, Wolfenstein, etc, and it was fun going around shooting stuff just for the sake of shooting stuff, but now I either want a story or platforming, neither of which work really well for me in FP. And I still get to play some shooters - Vanquish and Binary Domain come to mind.
That said, I still probably wouldn't play this, not into online multiplayer w/ strangers. Probably b/c they are usually FPS so now I'm just biased against them in general.
@Bad-MuthaAdebis I loved the idea of it but when the camera pulls out into 3rd person to do that it disorientates me...not sure why. I need to play with the Blade dancer sub class more I think.
I miss Socom but playing Destiny third person would not fill that empty space, and Destiny is fine the way it is. It may be a cool feature though so really i guess idk lol. I would take a Socom 2 remake over 3rd person destiny any day.
I actually enjoy playing skyrim and fallout in third person sometimes. So I definitely would give it a try. Not sure how it would work with Destiny, though...
I much prefer a 3rd person view. I actually don't like a 1st person view for any type of game. I don't feel it's ever been done truly right. It always just feels like a floating camera.
True story I though the game was actually in third person when I tried the beta.
Nothing better than standing on a red sand dune, Phobos and Deimos behind you, destroyed legions of Cabal laying motionless as you pan around your badass in 3rd person.
I would have gotten this game had it been in third-person... so yeah, I would play it as a TPS.
No. I have to be honest, I think the majority of third person shooters suck, I don't like them, in fact, I hate them. First person gives me much more atmosphere and draws me in more, much more compared to third person. So many people say third person, but I think some of those votes are because third person is in fact the underdog in these types of games and that's all there is to it. FPS games are much better for what they do. third person works for games like Tomb Raider, Uncharted, Resident evil, DMC, and stuff like that.
I didn't like Warhawk at all because of the fact it was third person and I'm certainly not going to lie about liking third person just for the sake of it. like I said before, I like third person for games like uncharted and stuff like that, but not for games like Destiny, screw that and 100% yuck to infinite.
Yep. Defiantly. I wish FPS games would have this alternative 3rd person mode, so many FPS games out there which for me fall short of delivering a true cinematic experience because of the perspective. It's not just shooters but we're seeing games in 1st person with other genres. I didn't buy Destiny because it's an FPS. It has the potential to be amazing as a 3rd person, 3rd person games done right deliver on the EPIC cinematic feel which Destiny claims to have. With Project Morpheus coming soon I'm concerned it will become more and more the norm. Developers would appeal to more gamers if they offered both modes.
I think it would be better waaaaay better 😚💨💨💨
Yup, I would. Especially when Hunters have that ability that switches them to third-person for a few seconds, giving them the chance to peak around corners/objects while the other two classes can't.
I can't play first person games anymore because they make me sick and give me headaches... I got old at like 23. So yes, this would be awesome.
I know the shooting wouldn't be as twitch, but i don't care for that kind of game play anymore anyway... mostly because of the sickness i guess.
Heck yea i prefer third person!
This would be the only thing that'd get me to buy Destiny. I've long said that third person is far superior to first person... (http://www.shadowedblade.net/2014/03/muses-shortfalls-of-the-first-person/)
And I'm quite excited with the concept of playing Destiny, but the drawbacks of first person play simply ruin any potential it has for me.
