The critical reception may be a boiling pot of piping hot and lukewarm, but that hasn’t stopped Destiny from achieving the biggest new intellectual property launch in the UK, brushing aside Watch Dogs, which was the previous record holder. Unsurprisingly, the PlayStation 4 version sold best on British shores, consuming 46 per cent of the sales. Meanwhile, the Xbox One occupied 36 per cent, with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 scoring 14 per cent and four per cent respectively.
Fascinatingly, that makes the split between brands even, which will perhaps disappoint Sony – especially considering that it spent big on the co-marketing deal. To be fair, the figures do perhaps indicate that gamers have fled the PS3 like a sinking ship, while some are still satisfied sticking with the Xbox 360 – Yusuf Medhi redeemed? Of course, this only applies to the UK, so we’re sure that the figures swing much more heavily in the Japanese giant’s favour when continental Europe is added to the equation.

Well if I was an average consumer I'm pretty sure I'd be thinking Destiny was an exclusive till I get into a store and see the other copies.
82% on new gen though, that's really impressive, considering the install base is 15-20 million, vs roughly 160 million on old gen. Seems most dedicated gamers have moved on in less than a year, good news for everyone.
@DrClayman I think what make its more impressive is that UK PS4 sales are "only" just north of 1 million compared to around 15 millon last gen consoles...
@penfold007 True, but I think those 1 million people that have bought a PS4 represent the real 'hardcore'. How many of those 15 million last-gen consoles are being used for Netflix or sitting in a cupboard?
This is why the likes of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel are in for a tough, tough time.
@get2sammyb Yeah. Very true. But it makes a nice looking comparison if you just gloss over that...
All i care about is hopefully it sold more PS4 'Consoles' really + Like(by the looks of it) the PS3 Fan's i to have no excitement for a Bungie game
@Carl-G Yea I dont think bundles are included
@get2sammyb I completely agree about Borderlands, the majority of the people that would be interested (including me) have jumped to new gen. Combine that with a ton of releases coming out this fall, it doesn't bode well for them.
@DrClayman
Yes, hopefully this trend continues for other upcoming big releases across both formats. The sooner developers drop the PS3 and 360 the better.
@get2sammyb Do you think Borderlands The Pre-Sequel will be ported to PS4 next year (with all the DLC no doubt)? I think it's pretty certain.
I was going to get Destiny, but even though I dont mind playing in an online, multiplayer world (and even occasionally playing with other players) I would never join any kind of clan or serious group, which a few of the trohpies require, so as fun as the game appears to be, the trophy list makes it a nobuy.
@get2sammyb - "How many of those 15 million last-gen consoles are being used for Netflix or sitting in a cupboard?"
I bet they get some use when KH 2.5 releases Probably LBP 3 as well unless they delay the PS3 version until after Christmas (that's what I would do if I were them.) PS3 users have a lot more real PS+ games to play than PS4 owners have, we don't need to buy new games (currently playing TR, SC:TiT, B:I, DD:DA, and haven't started DmC Reboot yet, or Remember Me)
I mean, if you purchased a PS4 then yes you bought Destiny, or else your PS4 would be sitting in a cupboard.
@rjejr
Actually a fair point I didn't consider Plus on PS3 is still good and since MS removed its head from its a$$ long enough to create 'Games with Gold' there's been a lot of good full games for free on 360 that unlike Plus are actually yours to keep. Those could be factors, but it still doesn't negate the current gen versions selling better. Time for developers to move on from those two, now ancient machines.
@Gamer83 - "still doesn't negate the current gen versions selling better"
No, I'm surprised current gen sold better considering the install bases are so different. The UK is weird though, fairly small sample size, but I'm interested if these numbers hold across the US and EU. X1 install base in the US has to be much smaller than the 360, maybe only 10%? (about 4m to 40m, just guessing?)
Mostly though my entire comment was just giving Sammy a hard time about that cupboard crack, I play on my PS3 almost every day. I even told my kid just yesterday that if it died I might replace it w/ a new PS3 rather than a PS4 if I could find a good $199 holiday package deal, not the 12GB model though. If PS4 played PS3 discs obviously I would get a PS4.
@rjejr
I'm interested in the NPDs too. On Gamestop and Amazon NA the X1 version has tracked highest lately, with PS4 in second. Prior to that however it was the PS4 version on top followed by X1 then the last-gen consoles. If I had to guess, I'd say Sept. will go PS4, X1, X360, PS3, after that, it'll be the current gen versions possibly flip-flopping a few times. The % breakdown across all 4 consoles will be most interesting, hopefully they give us some real numbers.
Well obviously it will sell better on PS4 when there're around double the units out there.
um...46% for a single console is HUGE, obviously PS3 sales push that over the the halfway mark quite abit for a big push for sony
that said it doesn't help that microsoft have tried to steal it away by selling the kinect-less xbox one with both destiny and halo master chief collection for just £349.99 at GAME
...so you're getting both games FOR FREE!!!
