Sony doesn’t tend to understand the concept of patch notes. While it will always detail the major changes included as part of a numbered firmware update, it frequently throws in hidden extras. This has been the case since the early days of the PlayStation 3, and just because it’s got a fancy new piece of hardware on the market, it doesn’t appear eager to change this long-running tradition.
So, are there any hidden extras included as part of the widely publicised PlayStation 4 firmware update v2.00? There are a couple of obvious ones: notifications for Trophies and messages now include a PlayStation button prompt, which when pressed takes you directly to the associated system area, while the audio codec for Party chat has been significantly overhauled.
There are some lesser tweaks, too, though. For example, you can now force a game to look for updates by hovering over it in the system tray and tapping the options button, while you can also use Kappa emoticons in Twitch streams. Elsewhere, mouse support has been implemented, while you can dictate how long you want your controller to charge for when your console's in Rest Mode.
Furthermore, there are tons of subtle improvements to game streaming, such as the addition of a green screen mode for the PlayStation Camera, as well as multitasking in the Live from PlayStation app, allowing you to continue watching a stream while browsing for other channels. mouse support? for what games?
@TOMBOY25 Mouse support for games is up to the developer, some games actually support it (and some did on the PS3 even). I believe he means mouse support for the OS navigation (maybe the browser?)
@TOMBOY25 web browsing maybe?
@thedevilsjester snap haha
Can't believe there was no sign of a "USER X IS NOW ONLINE" notifications. Also fixing the messaging system would be another great thing to work on.
Would also like a fully fledged Twitch app, but can't see Sony delving into that for obvious reasons.
Did anyone else notice that audio playback in voice chat sounds and seems a lot more crisp? Especially with PS4''s stock headset.
YouTube app on PS4 has taken on the Material Design which is Googles approach to the latest versions of its Android platform and Apps, there also taking this approach with all their apps/sites through browsers as well soon enough.
@Pittoo I really like the design of the YouTube app and wouldn't mind seeing more of it.
@Pittoo Yeah, the audio in Party chat is much, much better now. Massive improvement.
@TOMBOY25 No idea what it's for, but it's listed under 'Devices' in the system settings.
@TOMBOY25 Final Fantasy XIV susuppoed mouse and keyboard at launch. Think it depends on the dev.
@TOMBOY25 Warthunder
Some point and click strategy games would be nice to go with the mouse support....Dawn of War and its expansions and sequel would do nicely.
Other than the lack of folders (I want to organise my own stuff damnit), I really like the PS4's UI, and it is just getting better. A few really good things here too.
I did notice there are now options to attach a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse etc. Not sure if that was there before. I wonder if it works with all, or if there will be specific hardware coming down the road. Not really interested in a mouse (not great on the couch) but a keyboard has its uses definitely.
Still waiting for dynamic themes in Aus. None available yet. Oh well, red is still a nice change.
I held in the ps button for 30 seconds and my cat exploded
@Pittoo Really need sort the messaging out takes forever to load a message i receive of people.really annoying if you in a online lobby and races are about to begin !!
You can pause downloads. This was honestly the best thing about the update for me; it's been so annoying having downloads slowed to a crawl because a few upates felt the need to squeeze in there.
@Bad-MuthaAdebis I agree. Overall it feels a lot less stable than before. I've had issues with the menu behaving properly.
Why do I feel Sony just keep messing things up recently?
