Scoffing fast food and going to the gym could be about to get entertaining again, as speculation suggests that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas may be getting the re-release treatment on the PlayStation 3. The title launched as a PlayStation 2 Classic some time ago, but Rockstar Games has since pulled that version from the PlayStation Store.
To add fuel to the oversized fire, a bunch of Xbox 360 achievements have popped up around the web, which have been scraped directly from Microsoft’s servers. These pertain to various activities from the game, with each virtual award attached to a unique piece of artwork. It’s unlikely that the proposed update will be an exclusive, so some kind of high definition remaster for the PS3 looks likely right now.
This, of course, would be absolutely excellent news, as the series’ third PS2 instalment remains, for many, the absolute pinnacle of the popular property. There was a ridiculous amount of busywork – as is so common in Rockstar releases these days – but we reckon that it absolutely nailed the concept of sandbox silliness. We can’t imagine it holding up too well today, though.

I wouldnt mind playing this on my vita. this is still my favorite GTA to date.
@oddtodd
Totally with you on that! This GTA was so awesome that the others just didn't seem to do it for me. Maybe it was the right time, right place...but this was a character I could actually relate to and it was just perfect. The other GTAs always lacked the feel of this one.
This on the vita would be an instant buy..come on Sony, throw some of that money they love so much at them!
My fav is Vice City. Loved that game so much when it came out but SA is def a close second.
The last paragraph of the article reads weird. You praise the game and its re-release in what seems like great excitement and then the last short sentence hits with a sharp contrast. Maybe its just me.
Honestly I would rather see an updated version of Vice City rather then San Andreas. I can understand the reason behind SA because its the same city as GTA V.
I could never get into SA personally and enjoyed the characters and ciy alot more in VC. I am hoping that GTA 6 will be a return trip to VC since GTA IV had a revamped Liberty City and GTA V had a revamp SA. Its time now for a revamp Vice City.
They should just remaster all of the GTA PS2 games & get it over with.
Being an 80's kid, Vice City was my favorite. And I think I am one of the only 5 people on the planet to not play San Andreas yet. So I would be interested in this.
What's interesting to me is how Rockstar would get the licensed music back in the game.
This would nice on Vita with some online features.
@Boerewors
Well, they did base this games of of real-life California, and they had two games to learn from before hand. San Andreas was probably one of their most ambitious projects.
@Godsire-
I've been wondering the same thing. I mean, they already have an trilogy set, so an HD trilogy would be a no-brainer. Maybe they were too busy with other projects, they aren't the most prolific company after all.
So this is what they have been working on instead of heists for GTA 5 or a new Red Dead.
Did I miss something? Adding fuel to the fire? Was there something besides the 360 achievements being spotted? Just wondering cuz I'm really hoping it's true.
@Zombie_Barioth
Yea I always say Rockstar is one of the most "overrated" companies in gaming. Not because any of their games suck (well, that table tennis game on the 360 was crap, in my opinion), but because I usually rate their games in the 8-8.5 range as opposed to all the 10's they get. They make very good-great games, not perfect ones.....in my opinion.
However, one thing I give them a lot of credit for is for not "whoring out" the GTA franchise like Activi$ion did w/ COD or EA is doing w/ Battlefield. Or what Ubisoft does w/ Assassin's Creed. Yea their games take years to finish, but that's how it should be. And they make quality titles every time.
It would be real easy to start putting out a GTA every year (basically $60 expansions) or create some stupid spin-offs, etc. just to make a quick buck. But to your point, they are deliberate......but that's a good thing. So yea, maybe they haven't had time to re-do all their PS2 games in HD.
@XFsWorld and if not,that's a shame for SONY ( not for Rockstar,Keep that in your mind)
I came across my pc version not long ago in my old cd collection, reinstalled it, only to find that it had indeed not aged well. An hd remaster, with revamped controls would be necessary.
When GTA Online was being advertised, they mentioned plans to add more areas to the world that you could reach by train, plane, and boat. Maybe this will double as an expansion?
@zombie_Barioth i loved that table tennis game! Really hope this comes to vita.......GTA SA not table tennis.....well that could work as well.
Jus do the right thing sony and bang it on the vita. Actually while your at it get the other 2 on there aswell! If we have to only have remakes at least pick good ones....devil may cry portable anyone?
Once every couple years I have the sudden need to play san andreas and I hook up my PS2 again. I only stop playing when you have to do the gangwars near the end. One of my favourite games of all time
That subheading.
All the GTAs are brilliant for their time, but I don't want to go back and play any of them again. Not even GTA 5 on PS4.
@imtom2002 Sony are incapable of making anything or advertising the Vita what makes you think they'd give a toss about other companies doing something on it? More chance of Scarlett Johansson releasing a sex tape exclusively through PSN than GTA on Vita.
Sure why not?, its not like this game isnt avalaible in every other platform
PS4 release and I'll buy, if not, I'll save my money.
My favourite was always Vice City. The music, motorbikes and Miami backdrop were superb, so was the character and mafia connections. Though now GTA5 probably takes the best GTA crown for me...
In SA I wasn't too keen on the new extra stuff they put into it like the gym for building stamina etc...
I just downloaded the pc version to my MacBook last month. Wouldn't mind an updated version of the ps4 or vita tho.
Please remaster all the gta ps2 games on vita!!!!!!
They need to make a GTA HD Collection for Vita
Well it's confirmed for the Xbox 360
