Want to know what’s better than first-party games? Themes, of course! Sony may have more or less pulled the plug on internal PlayStation Vita development, but at least it’s released a new firmware update that promises to bring a slew of pretty patterns to your favourite portable. Beginning today, you’ll be able to purchase an array of themes in North America, with more to follow over the coming months. There’s no word on when the dazzling designs will hit the European PlayStation Store.
In truth, this new update – dubbed v3.30 for those keeping count – seems largely built around the PlayStation TV, which is due out in North America later this month. In addition to adding controller compatibility, it also changes a few product codenames, and even allows those with imported microconsoles to connect using Western accounts. Elsewhere, there are tweaks to the Calendar application, alongside the implementation of Trophy rarity data, which debuted on the PlayStation 4.
You can download the firmware update right now, and it’s mandatory, so make sure that you set aside a few minutes to get everything up to date. Do you intend to purchase a theme? Have you noticed any other improvements to the handheld? Scroll down, and write us a message in the comments section below.

Love the trophy rarity data, so I far I could only check it on the Playstation app and on PSNProfiles — it's very nice to have it there along with my VITA trophy list.
I have my own custom background pics and lock screen already so I'm not fussed about themes
@Bad-MuthaAdebis @FullbringIchigo Yep, same here.
@Bad-MuthaAdebis - It may be a bit late, but they are getting it out just before the 3DS paid themes start coming out, and 3DS is older than Vita, so they have that going for them.

I'm not paying for themes though. Ever on any console. I have been using vacation photos on my PS3 for wallpaper, works really well. Whatever the PS TV comes w/ for free, that's what I'll use.
Controller compatibility? Meaning I can sync my ds4 to the vita with no issues or what...
So now if I import a PSTV I can use my EU account on it?
@rjejr The themes on 3/2DS though also include a new model with options to change the case and a lot more variety. Both handhelds should have had this ages ago though. Around two years late in Vita's case.
@rastamadeus - "with options to change the case and a lot more variety"
Judging by the new commercials in Japan the changing faceplates are pretty much all the new 3DS has going for it. I know it has more but you'ld never know it from the marketing. It's all about the faceplates. They don't even mention the NFC for the vaporware amiibo.
Oh, and I know the themes are tied into the new 3DS and faceplates but I'm pretty sure the old 3DS will get themes as well. Anyway my original point, which I may have obfuscated, stands - better for Sony to release this before the new 3DS and themes release then after.
