The problem with global gaming networks is that someone is always trying to play – so you better make sure that your service is online, otherwise there’ll be hell to pay. Some will attempt to tell you that the PlayStation Network is always offline, and while that’s not entirely true, there have been more outages over the past month or so than in the entire previous year combined.
Of course, Sony’s already said that it’s investigating this latest issue, so, as with most other offline episodes, you should probably expect normal service to resume soon – likely by the time that we’ve finished this article, as that’d be just our luck. In the meantime, may we recommend playing a game of tiddlywinks – it’s good old fashioned fun, and the graphics are great.
Update: Service is being resumed around the world. As you were, everyone.

It only does everything but online.
Still not on... Had a short window for some destiny as well.
If this was posted an hour or two ago I'd have probably made a little joke but right now I just don't have it in me.
Damn, this was my only day off in weeks and I can't play online.
Im sorry but this is getting ridiculous!!! I don't see how this issue is getting worse not better. Its not even slightly better. I can't use my PS3, PS4 or even my Vita. At this point they're just making there competition look good whilst making themselves look incompetent. This DDOS attack or whatever its called happened a month ago. Sony said that during the monday maintenance they'd be doing some back end maintenance on there servers. This is the company that stated the PS4 was a gaming machine first and foremost but given DriveClub's issues (I know thats meant to be a separate issue) it doesn't seem to even be doing that. I have loved the PlayStation brand ever since the PS1 in the mid 90's but im now starting to loose faith.
Think off all of the XBOX gamers that jumped over to PS4. If im feeling this disgruntled how are they going to be feeling.
Yes the PS4 is more powerful, looks better and PlayStation has far more and better exclusives than its main rival, but atleast that works.
Also Sony now charges for online as standard so one would expect a much better and value for money service.
I, like lots of others work for a living so im limited to how much time I get to game and play online with friends. So when I get home and cannot sign in to my PS4 or even when I can can't talk with friends or play onine it makes me wonder why I even bother with PlayStation at this point.
This is also the company that thinks its gonna bring PlayStation Now (Online game streaming) to the world. Don't make me laugh. They can't even keep there PS4 online service running.
Also if by some miracle people put these issues aside and decide to buy the PS4 for Christmas there will be thousands if not millions of extra people putting strain on the already weak and incompetent online service. Im going to be calling Sony tomorrow and asking for a rebate on my new 12 month PlayStation Plus subscription or at the very least ask for some kind of compensation.
Call me petty but I've payed in advance for a service I am not getting.
If I am not totally satisfied with at the very least a very reasonable explanation I'll seriously start to consider XBOX or Nintendo as my go to gaming device.
Strange thing is Xbox LIVE's Friends List was down a few days ago to. Odd that.
It's either PSN load issues with the new games, the new PS TV users, and the online burden caused by Destiny and Driveclub, OR it could just be a bunch of idiots trying to rip the whole thing down for some stupid reason, be it console wars, Driveclub, or #gamergate. I bought a 4 hour rental on PS Now, and it went down an hour later.
This is starting to look really, really bad. How many times has it gone down in the past month alone? Preposterous.
My mate has just sent me this via ign :-
"Sony has confirmed that the issue is related to the high number of users attempting to connect simultaneously to PSN. Playstation 4 automatically reaches out to PSN when connected to the internet, and the traffic volume appears to be overwhelming server capacity."
http://m.uk.ign.com/wikis/playstation-4/PS4_Sign_In_Problems
I wonder if this is because of DC problems. As the game automatically tries to connect and must be generating a lot more traffic then normal. Just a wild guess
It's gone down more times this year than the entire existence of PSN combined.
PlayStation 4 isn't loading any of my trophies... AGAIN!!! I've been looking forward to getting in some game time but since I cannot load trophies or my friends list im just going to give up.
Sony saying that due to so many people using PSN is causing server issues is a complete lie. They reached the 10 million units sold months ago so they would have had some idea of future server issues and maybe used some of the PlayStation Plus subscription money to invest in more and stable servers.
I've recently converted from X**x, so not been affected by previous outages during the first half of this year. Don't remember LIVE being this bad.
When online play was free, I didn't mind when things like this happened. Can't complain, it's free! Not the case anymore. It'd be nice if they at least sent all Plus members a five dollar store credit due to these outages. We'd just use it toward $20-60 games anyway, so they still win.
I'm going to go out a limb here and say they aren't going to do that, however.
I can't even use my PS3 as a backup gaming solution since I cannot sign in which means I cannot play my free PlayStation Plus games or even use my games a bought from my local retail store since all my game saves are stored on the PlayStation cloud.
This has been an awful 2 weeks or so Sony, DAMNNN!! Microsoft carrying out covert operations to damage PS rep before the Xmas season smh
Mines been fine all evening. Oh well.
@dgwdum Well it's back up now
@Jazzer94 Kaz has it in him!
https://twitter.com/kazhiraiceo/status/522866776393416706
Really good.
my ps4 went offline for 5 minutes, big wup
Kk people we must remember that sony has.... PS3/PS4/Vita/ps tv, Micosoft has xbox 360 and Xbox one.
I know this isn't really a good excuse due to the fact we paying for online, I've jumped from Xbox 360 to PS4 and I've not had any problems, till this last month or so! I really hope sony pull there fingers out and REALLY sort this out, it's becoming a BIG problem now! Coming from a bloke that works lots of hours, to come home to chill online with friends only to find the service is down AGAIN is really starting to bug me!!
@NINJAKIDD If this is really true it's worrying times!! Due to the fact Christmas is right round the corner and I'm sure kids and adults will be buying a PS4, if sonys servers can't keep up now Christmas holidays is looking fun......NOT!!
@Midzark actually no. Microsoft has xbox, xb1 AND windows OS which is the most popular pc OS in the world, all running through their servers. The thing is that Microsoft just has 100x more servers than sony and it's not sony's fault really, Microsoft actually needs them. Still sony needs to step up their game.
@dgwdum that's quite true actually, when you think about the amount of ppl who have OneDrive, corporations that have implemented Office365, Exchange data accessed on the fly, Outlook.com mail. The list is endless. You can now start to realise how massive their server infrastructure is. Still Sony can do much much better then this, they have the resources.
@dgwdum Actually M$ invested in a tonne of extra server for this gen thinking they were going to smash Sony's new system. Which they didn't. And windows has hardly anything to do with M$ servers. In fact Sony use far more devices that use server space than M$ does. Look it up.
I will say one thing though, now Sony knows that the PS4 is a world wide success they need to take a leaf out of M$ book and invest in more servers.
They have no excuse since they've started charging people to play online.
@WARDIE
Yeah, I don't think Sony has the better exclusives as of right now.
Get the led out Sony.
PS how do I post a pic?
No real issues here.
This is the only time Ive been affected personally.
I dont get what the big deal is myself, Ill just play offline until resolved, and as for saves being on on the cloud only, thats a bad idea, not having a back up on the hardware itself.
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya agreed. Cloud saving is intended as a backup in case the console bricks, using them exclusively is a crazy idea, like what happens if something goes wrong with your ISP and you can't get internet access for a week or something? Crazy. Nobody can play tiddlywinks for an entire week...
Also @WARDIE you don't need to be signed in to play PS+ games, unless your sub has expired since the time you DL'd the game and you hadn't played it since the sub got renewed. On that basis surely you had something you could play, unless your sub literally expired just before the outage?
@WARDIE Well said couldnt of put it better myself i love ps4 but its not funny anymore they need to spend big bucks to improve there already weak servers or risk losing thousands of customers to xbox which dominate online and thats where its at
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya I agree, It's not really a big deal. I just fired up Infamous: First Light seen as single-player games do still exist. People just like to complain as they believe they're entitled to an always online PSN service, even though it doesn't state anywhere as far as Im aware in the documentation agreed upon for an SEN account that Sony will be providing one.
@WARDIE Sony don't charge people to play online, they charge people for PS+. Its up to publishers whether their games are behind the paywall. Thats why you'll find numerous games (COD: Ghosts probably being the most high profile) that doesn't require PS+ for online gameplay.
@MadchesterManc Yeah infact Sony do charge to play online. Its part of the package, like joining friends in partys. Sony allows online play in f2p game and or unless they've made a deal with a dev/pub. They made a deal with Bethesda to have Elder Scrolls Online free of PlayStation Plus subscription, but thats only because ESO has a subscription fee of its own.
Anyway, it actually now states what PlayStation Plus is is needed for and online play is a big part of PS+. If it wasn't for the free games I doubt I'd even bother with the way the server issue has been handled
@WARDIE Did you read the whole of my comment or just the first few words? I think you musn't have got the memo at E3 last year when Sony was discussing the online gaming aspect being introduced for PS+ that would put whether a game would be behind the paywall or not at the discretion of the publishers. So yeah, infact they charged for PS+. No doubt with most retail releases putting their online portions behind the paywall, PS+ might as well now be regarded as required for online play. That doesn't change the fact that Sony originally opted for it to be optional, just the publishers have opted to utilise the paywall & get a little slice of the pie.
Your MMO is actually a good example of the point Ive been trying to make. Theres currently a subscription based MMMO on Ps4 in FFXIV, which has never required PS+ and was in fact opted to be that way by Square Enix themselves as they recognised that there was already a subscription fee. If Sony are having to make a deal with Bethesda to get ESO out of the PS+ paywall, doesn't it kinda prove my point of publishers having the choice with these two examples?
@WARDIE that's why I keep everything on hard drive and don't bother with online. Online in my opinion feels tacked on, and I'm sure they will fix it. They have a history of f*ckimg up and fixing it. Look at the ps3 when it first came out. They fixed the issues. Price, online, among others. It'll take some time.
@MadchesterManc Yes and no. If you go into the PlayStation store and look at the PlayStation Plus subscription section and read the first line of the benefits of PlayStation Plus, it states, With PS+ you can play online with friends, which if im mistaken suggests the need of the subscription service to do just that. I agree that when Sony first announced the mandatory subscription it may have been upto developers weather or not to allow free access to the mp side of there games but it has been used as a mp pay wall for around 90% of retail games. When my subscription ended I put it to the test and aside from the F2P games I wasn't able to play or talk with my friends on all of my mp retail games.
But to answer your first question, yes I read alll of your comment. Im not trying to argue/disagree with you comment but in this case I think we both made a valid point.
@Hero-of-WiiU True but I actually meant as a whole. They have tonnes of first party devs hard at work. Its just unfortunate we don't know what most are working on or when they'll be released.
@Punished_Boss_84 I am fine with that. I loved my NES, my SNES, my PS1, and my PS2, all without online play; and with very rare exceptions, avoid any and all games that have an online multiplier aspect on my PS3 and PS4. If Sony were to shut down the PSN for good, I would find that as a blessing (it would mean that single player games would stop trying to shoe horn a multiplayer mode into their game).
I would miss FFXIV, and the random "gift" from "friends" while playing Diablo 3, but other than that, I wouldn't even notice that it was gone except I wouldn't have to research every single player game to see if it has some online mode (and thus make it a no-buy) before I bought it.
@MadchesterManc I read that the issue with ESO was with Microsoft and not Sony.
Sony had already stated F2P and games requiring subs would not be required, as you said.
Microsoft were still requiring Xbox Live Gold to play it at all. But I could be mistaken.
I would argue that as a paying customer I do expect a certain level of service, that I think Sony are providing.
These outages arent that big a deal.
