We thought that Sony had solved all of the PlayStation Network’s woes, but the infamous DDoS attack earlier in the year appears to have left the platform holder’s infrastructure rocking. Destiny’s launch came and went with nary a disconnect, but as the holiday release calendar has heightened, there have been reports of countless problems – as well as the whole DriveClub saga.
The platform holder probably could do with a ruddy good period of scheduled maintenance in order to dust out the server racks and settle everything down, then. And, while we daresay that it’s not going to go down well, that’s exactly what it’s planning for Monday, 13th October. That’s right, starting 10:00AM PDT (18:00PM BST), the online platform will go under construction for seven or so hours.
During this time, you’ll be unable to access Account Management or the PlayStation Store, but, as is so frequently misreported around the web, you will be able to play online – as long as you’ve logged into the PlayStation Network recently. In other words, if you regularly use your suite of Sony systems, you shouldn’t really notice any real downtime.
The firm claims that it will use the period to “deploy a series of back end improvements to the network”, so hopefully this will calm things down ahead of the busy Christmas period. Of course, there’s some speculation that it may also be clearing the decks ahead of PlayStation 4 firmware update 2.00, which is also supposedly right around the corner. Exciting stuff, huh?

Monday at 1PM? While all the kids are home from school for Columbus day?
Guess we'll see how smooth it goes.
I hope they clean up a lot of sh*t. It's a frickin' paid-for service now. Enough of the crap and excuses, just fix it.
Well I was hoping for the share play update today but very that going to happen due to this. But definitely agree that there is work to be done in regards of there network. All I can say to other gamers who get frustrated with not be being able to play online, take a day of from it. It will do us all good to take a brake.
I've never had any problems apart from the first week of destiny and the infamous dbag attacks.
@rjejr I know. For the love of gaming why don't Sony do maintenance work on Tuesdays or something when we don't have national holidays?
This happened in the UK too a few times this year...
Alas it seems as if those pesky house reno's just found their way into my schedule.
Think I've only ever been unable to use PSN once during a maintenance period. As the article says, and as is said every single time, if you've been signed in recently, you'll have no problems. So I've never understood why there's always so much whining about it - I mean, other than the fact that a large proportion of PlayStation owners seem to like nothing better than whining.
What's peculiar is that if you play online enough that these maintenance periods would be at an inconvenient time, then it's not likely to affect you anyway. You're only likely to be affected if you don't play online/sign in that often, and if that's the case, it shouldn't be much of an issue anyway.
However you look at it though, it's not a big deal. 99% of games are still playable without a PSN connection. It's not like it renders your systems completely unusable. Invite some real friends round and play some local multiplayer, or watch a movie. Even if you can't log in, if you can't survive 7 hours without a PSN connection, there's something wrong with you/your life.
my hulu and netflix crashes so much, its laughable
@Paranoimia amen bro
OK I don't own a PS4 and I keep hearing share play. What is it? I understand its a feature not yet implemented, so that's all I know. Also I heard that the ps4 should have a standby feature for games? Is that implemented yet or is that still on hold? It would be nice to know these as I will be owning a ps4 soon.
@Paranoimia sometimes couch co op is very fun and really needed. Even games need more man In my opinion.
@Alpha Share Play is a new feature that allows your friends to play your game even if they don't own a copy of the game themselves. Its just like passing a controller to a friend thats sat next to you even if they're on the otherside of the world. They basically take control of you PS4 whilst you watch them play via your TV screen.
Also to answer your other question, you can suspend your gameplay at anypoint and load up Netflix/LoveFilm/Hulu or whatever application you use to watch Movies and TV programs. You don't even need to save your progress as once you've finished watching whatever ever movie/show you can load up you game in just a couple of seconds and continue from the exact same place you left off. I have heard of a system suspend feature much like the the PlayStation Vita's suspend mode coming to PS4 but as yet it doesn't have that feature.
We were also told that in a later update we would be able to use our old PS1/PS2 games on the PS4 much like the original PS3 feature until it was later removed, apart from the backwards compatibility of PS1 games that is. Which I still use to this day to play the original Ultimate and final Doom.
Hope this was somewhat helpfull.
Ps Please excuse any spelling mistakes as I've just got back in from clubing lol
I hope this Maintenance is to prepare for Firmware 2.00 for PS4
