In a period where PlayStation Plus has come under more criticism than ever before, DriveClub was supposed to be the sweetener that got everyone back on board. Sony revealed a cut down version of Evolution Studios’ exclusive PlayStation 4 racer at E3 2013, but the title’s delay meant that it was eventually replaced. However, after a year of waiting, the spruced up sampler was finally supposed to launch earlier this month – so where is it?
The drive-‘em-up’s online issues are already well documented, with the title spinning out on the starting grid when it deployed last week. The majority of those that purchased the full version have spent seven or so days playing offline, as the Runcorn-based developer has employed a ‘one in, one out’ policy for the title, preventing large numbers of people from being able to connect. It’s since patched the release – and its servers – several times to allow more and more players to get online.
At the time of typing, the game is almost where it should have been when it launched. Evolution Studios stresses that it’s updating its servers on an hour-by-hour basis, and has been adding more and more features back in over the past few days. In a post on its official Facebook page overnight, the company said that it’s planning to re-introduce Face-Offs shortly, which are the dynamic gameplay challenges that made up a chunk of the product’s pre-release marketing.
With that last piece of the puzzle almost in place, we can’t imagine that DriveClub: PS Plus Edition is too far away now. The firm’s priority has been to patch up the game for those who actually paid for it, which seems fair – but it’s still said that it’s “working hard” to get the complimentary title out “as soon as possible”. In the past, it’s stressed that it didn’t want to give the game away without all of its features working, as it wants people to experience the title as intended.
Of course, putting the product into the hands of potentially millions of new players will bring with it a whole new set of problems, so we imagine that the company will be extra diligent with its servers before committing to any kind of timeframe. As such, without being on the inside, it’s impossible for us to give a firm estimate for the free version. Given the rate that things have been progressing over the past few days, though, we’re still hopeful that it will arrive before the end of the month – unless there’s another disaster, of course.

Do we think PlayStation will allow any game to release again that has major online multiplayer features without running a proper beta? One would hope not. The situation stinks but I'm still looking forward to playing the game. Even if the online stuff doesn't work for a month or two I'm not all that fussed. Its pretty pathetic though.
I don't wish to disagree with you guys at Push Square and im not trying to add fule to the fire but I don't think we'll be getting DriveClub PlayStation Plus edition until the next months instant games collection at the earliest.
I hope my information is wrong but I don't think it is
@WARDIE Yeah, it's definitely possible. I don't think they'll put it up until they're 100 per cent confident they can cope with the load, but do believe them when they say it'll appear as soon as it's ready. The game's definitely improving now, so they're certainly on the right track. I guess they've just got to make sure that the influx of new players doesn't break everything again.
Ild just like to point out that DriveClub was not meant to be a PS4 1 year anniversary PS+ sweetener, it wss meant to be a LAUNCH TITLE that helped make up for the fact that you had to pay to play online on PS4 like it was some kind of Microsoft console. The fact that a game that was meant to be a "free" online launch title that is now neither free nor online is just too ironic to not be the central point of any article discussing it.
Free Online Greatness Waits, and waits, and waits.
I totally understand and agree with that statement and also feel sorry for both Evolution Studio's and Sony. Trouble is by next month they'll have alot more competition. I just hope lessons have be learned here and I wish them all the luck.
Driveclub kind of already doesn't exist for me They lost their attention slot
I will say one thing though. Apart from a couple of miner issues which could easily be fixed with a patch or two DriveClub is a really fun game. Its also very beautiful and has some of the best graphics seen this generation. Also the sounds and handling of the cars are spot on.
I personally believe alot of DriveClub's reviews were far too harsh and I'd give it easily 8+/10.
I think the may stagger the PS+ release by region to prevent so many downloads at once. Especially if it's 15Gb per download as suggested as that surely would be a massive load on any server farm?
@get2sammyb Yeah well, Overkill said that about Payday 2, and its over a year since release, and Xbox is still waiting that.
So I take that kind of statement with a shot of penicillin.
With new dependencies on the power of the internet and cloud services, I truly believe certain societal stresses have accumulated to such an extent as to where we, the consumers of entertainment products, have become disenfranchised through a system of false advertisement. Constant server failures even though fully paid for the consumer, push-back release dates of supposed AAA titles, unnacceptable customer response times, coupled with dreadful update frequency, ......unfortunately the list goes on and on. With such a multitude of negative aspects that have shown their ugly face upon this supposed "nextgen" of video game system, I honestly wonder when, and if the GAMER-WE THE CONSUMERS-THE FANBOYS- will ever come first again.
@rjejr It was never going to be a free game. People keep saying this nonsense! Back in June 2013 when I pre-ordered my PS4 I also pre-ordered DRIVECLUB because Sony said PS Plus would get a stripped down version. I wanted the full version so I pre-ordered. There never was a FULL FREE game offered.
If I was was bothered at all about racing games Id have been annoyed by these delays...as it is I feel bad for those who paid for the game and haven't been able to access all its features.
I am guessing that it will come in November's PS+ update the earliest.
Latest I've heard from people I know in Runcorn - used to live there and got family/friends still there - Evolution are facing massive lay offs. Dunno if it's because of this (not likely) but seems Sony have lost faith in them. Could be hearsay but heard it from five different people and two of which don't know any of the others.
The whole situation is clearly a debacle. it is hard to imagine a launch going worse. However, considering what has happened, I do agree with Evolution's stance that they have to make the game work as promised for those who have paid for it, before giving the game away free to PS+ users, which would only make the online worse through more traffic.
I hope the issues are sorted soon, but not yet convinced. Nov PS+ update is the earliest I can imagine the free version coming out.
DriveClub wouldn't survive another disaster.
@WARDIE The competition they would have been facing is much less now that Project Cars has moved to next year.
Interestingly, the online features have worked perfectly for me this afternoon for an extended period. I was able to join multi-player races etc. Not one dropout. Fingers crossed, they have finally fixed the server issues.
@Paranoimia Yeah and thats one of the reasons I picked up DriveClub yesterday and to be honest, im so glad I did.
I've only played the single player so far but I've really been enjoying it. Once they've worked out any kinks and got the server issues sorted I think DriveClub will deserve a review score of 8.5-9 out of 10.
Gamesspot gave it a 5/10 and I've now lost any trust I once had for there opinion.
IGN Gave is something like 7.9/10 which I think makes alot more sence. Yeah DriveClub has had a difficult launch to say the least but its only because of the server issues for which they're working around-the-clock to fix.
Rocktar and Take Two, the people behind GTA V had major online server issues when that game released which went on for some time. Millions of people couldn't play what Rocktar had promised to be game changing for a good few weeks. And to this very day, people are still waiting for the so called "Heist" missions that were promised as a free download for MP nearly a year ago.
@rastamadeus
The game has been a mess from the start, it wouldn't surprise me if Sony has lost faith in the studio. I don't root for anybody to lose their job, especially these days, when a game goes as poorly as this though, unfortunately that's what happens. Hopefully if there are layoffs, those effected get back on their feet quickly.
These online problems happen but it's just worst for sony fans as it's an exclusive sony game, plus ps plus so called cut version, plus it's a AAA title on release day. Like the guy said there's more fuss over this that GTA5!! It's just bad luck maybe there really not ready to rush games out as quick as we demand? Game spot gave it a 5/10 thats the last time I take review from them!!!
@noodleking1987
It's inexcusable when any company does this, this game had a lot of promises that Sony and Evolution haven't followed through on despite an 11-month delay, stop excusing both companies. Unless of course you're a corporate slave, then go on ahead and keep doing what you're doing. These companies love people who will support broken, garbage products.
@get2sammyb I hope that's true! Been looking forward to a new racing game.
