Assassin’s Creed Unity is now officially out in North America, meaning that many people are already sprinting across the Parisian skyline on the PlayStation 4. Well, they’re trying to at least. Reports surfacing all over the web suggest that the title is a bit of a buggy mess – and don’t worry, this appears to apply to all formats rather than just Sony's super machine.
We only received our review copies today – and can’t comment on them anyway, as we’re under embargo still – but reports on both Reddit and Dealspwn suggest that the title is suffering from some serious issues, including pop-in, geometry glitches, and framerate plunges way, way below the intended 30 frames-per-second. Not exactly promising, huh?
We’ll try to provide you with some early hands-on impressions as and when the embargo lifts later today, but if you’re planning to purchase the game, you may want to exercise a little caution before handing over your hard earned cash. We've got our fingers crossed that this is all a bit of a storm in a fine French teacup, though.

Can you tell us when the embargo lifts?
@ztpayne7 Yes, it lifts at 17:00PM GMT.
@get2sammyb gotcha. I was going to get this with targets buy 2 get 1 free deal. I think I still will but maybe I'll put this game on hold for a little bit.
I'll still play it. Lived in Paris for 5 years. Would pay just to run around Paris during the revolution. Already pre-ordered.
@Savino u should really try the experience for yourself before dismissing an entire generation of consoles based on the word of journalists. I love my ps4. Dont let the hyper critics put u off some really fun experiences out there
Pop-in is horrendous in this game.
This was inevitable. Just like the pc scene years before it, once u allow games to be released unfinished and unbug tested, corrected later by patches, then most games released will have these problems. Patching allows complacency. Simples
No, please not Unity. This is the only game, besides LBP 3 this season that I was looking forward to
Head of ubi: add more NPCs
programmer: but sir, we are running at full capacity, we are already down to 30fps. We could possibly change the resolution.
Head of ubi:NEVER, its not next gen if it's not 1080p. Add another 150 NPCs and lock down that resolution.
Programmer: but sir that will open us to riducle and much embarrassment.
Head of ubi: That is of no concern, have you seen the number of pre-orders, mwuhahahahahaaa.
@MoleZandor LOL. It's funny isn't it? How about trying to improve the combat, making the side missions more meaningful, creating new main mission designs, or setting up more elaborate assassination missions like they used to try and do? Nah! More NPCs, more pixels + co-op. That'll do the trick!
@rykkchii I think the main issue regarding this is that publishers want a new game out every 10 minutes. They don't give people enough time to actually finish the game properly.
Offt I've already prepaid but I'm sure a patch could fix things. Been waiting for ac2 successor. Ac3 and black flag were below par. From what I've seen it looks amazing bought the special edition
Glad I decided to cancel my pre-order and wait for reviews
Such a long embargo says a lot. This and Sonic Boom release today, and no reviews for either?
@sinalefa You will get reviews for Unity today, just not from us. Sadly, like I said in the article, we didn't get it until today...
EDIT: Same with Rogue.
I'm guessing Ubisoft has a day-1 patch that they've yet to release for some reason. If not then I have to say their quality control is in the toilet
People who bought that AC: Unity XBO bundle are reviewing it before game-site reviewers are allowed to publish their thoughts. lol.
please watch the language -Tasuki-
Wow!! Ubisoft went from a quality developer to the new EA ever since they released watchdogs, aren't they responsible for that game "the division?" That might turn out, not so good, judging by these last few releases, well, I preordered the game and it's paid off waiting til I get out of work. Hopefully I don't experience much of these bugs, I'm a huge fan of the series, I think they need to slow down though. 1 game every 2 years should suffice, it'll give the audience time to miss the series and create a more stable product. Better that, than losing fans all together!
Aside from the decent port of Black Flag to Ps4, almost everything else Ubisoft has released to the console has been technically inept. Not the least bit surprised to hear of technical issues for Unity. Rogue sounds a lot more interesting anyway....
Enough of this stuff. I got a gut feeling Ubisoft cannot be trusted and I was right. Not going to buy anymore games, especially not as a pre-order from EA, Activision or Ubi. Lessons learned once and for all. Going to hit them across the teeth with my wallet-vote.
This is your second warning please watch the language. Next time I won't just be asking.-Tasuki-
@MoleZandor you are aware that the game is 900p on both consoles right? Tbh if anything that makes it ten times worse that these problems are here lol, but still I thought it was worth pointing out based on what you had put.
And @Wesker genuine point of interest here have you had much decent hands on time with the game yet? Just because from all the info I've read prior to now, most people seem to be praising them for having done exactly that - rejuvenating the combat system and returning to a more elaborate and open ended format for the assassination missions. Just wondering, as if they haven't done that at all then it seems odd that so many would echo that.
I think I'll wait for a little before I get this, it might be fixed by then
@johnny30 +1
@sinalefa - Funny you mentioned Sonic Boom b/c I was thinking Sonic from Sonic '06 might be an Easter egg in this game after reading the article.
And part of the problem w/ PS and NL is all the staggered release dates for EU means we sometimes have to wait for reviews - SB is the 21st. Of course the worst part for me is waking up in the morning and feeling like I'm already a day behind.
@get2sammyb
I guess getting a review copy shortly before release works to enforce the embargo too. Damo on NL mentioned that they are waiting for their Sonic Boom copy.
@rjejr
Thankfully it works the other way around too, same with Metacritic. Something like Ace Attorney vs Layton got reviews months before their NA release.
@Savino
Couldn't agree with you more. This "next-gen" has been pure dogcrap, in my opinion.
Almost every game that comes out is either underwhelming, some buggy mess, has online problems, or is some quirky/artsy indie puzzle platformer that we've seen a million times already.
I know it's only year one, but this new generation of consoles needs to get it's crap together. Just because sales of the new consoles are strong (for now), doesn't mean people won't walk away, eventually, if they are constantly disappointed.
@rykkchii
You are right. Enabling the patching of console games, post-launch, has made developers lazy.
@Godsire- I don't think it's lazy developers, It will be impatient publishers. A developer will not be happy if the game isn't as good as they would like, I'm sure most of them take pride in what they are doing. but they still have no choice in the matter because it has to be released on schedule.
@sinalefa - Yeah that's a good point, sometimes I do get to read reviews in advance, but I think overall the US gets more games I'm interested in first.
@MoleZandor
Well said......I should've said publishers instead of developers. That's my mistake.
Yea release dates are more important that actually delivering a working product these days. And it's even worse this time of year. There is no way in hell Assassin's Creed: Unity was going to miss this release date. So they push a buggy product out the door & patch it later. Sad state of affairs.
Glad I decided not to buy this. The parity nonsense did work out for me in the end.
Thank goodness I got Rogue instead. FFS Ubisoft. Maybe it's Ubi's inability to work with PC, and since both of the new consoles have AMD PC architecture, everyone gets screwed!
I think I'll hold off on getting AC: Unity until I've seen a number of reviews and it's had time for issues to be patched.
Maybe if Ubisoft actually polished their games as opposed to rushing them out the door each and every November things like this wouldn't happen.
III, Black Flag, and now Rogue and Unity... all within 3 years. It's no wonder these games are a buggy mess.
Usual stuff from Ubi then so. Don't buy this rubbish.
Eh itll probably have a patch by the time i get to play it. Bought rogue and unity. Rogue is before unity supposedly, so i started there first.
@MoleZandor LOL! I'm about to go and get my Bastille edition & I am seriously worried now. Have really been looking forward to this game, FC4 next week then Dragon Age but this was meant to e such a great release, a real kick up the AC franchise ass. Was bad enough the had to lock down at 30FPS now this.
