When a game launch goes as badly as DriveClub, the best that a developer can do is try to atone for the problems as diligently and as quickly as possible. While we’d perhaps argue that Evolution Studios shouldn’t be in this position in the first place, at least it’s trying to make things up to its fans. And it’s announced exactly how it intends to do that in a new Facebook update posted overnight.
Firstly, anyone that’s already purchased the title will be getting November’s planned premium add-on packs for free. These will be made available on 25th November in North America and 26th November in Europe, and will comprise the Ignition and Photo Finish expansions. These will grant you five new cars, ten new Trophies, ten new livery items, and a whopping 22 new events.
Don’t worry if you’ve already purchased the Season Pass, though, as this will now be extended to July 2015, meaning that you’ll get even more content as part of your subscription. The studio’s also committed to continuously updating the title, with Photo Mode set to be implemented next week. It’ll be joined by tweaks to the penalty system and multiplayer collision physics.
There’ll also be a trio of new tracks for you to try: Yedepalli (India), Wester Ross (Scotland), and Los Pelambres (Chile). The firm has also reiterated that it's continuing to work hard on improving the title’s server capacity, and is aiming to launch the free PlayStation Plus version as quickly as possible. The game really shouldn’t be in this state, then – but this is a positive step forward all the same.

Haven't touched it for weeks. Given up.
That they're more concerned with getting DLC out - ultimately being forced to give it away for free - rather than fix the sodding thing tells you everything you need to know about Evolution. Imagine if EA or Activision announced "Hey, game's still broke, we're doing half an hours work each day to fix it, oh here's some DLC!" - the comments on every website would be full of outrage. Same should be here. Free or not it doesn't matter.
I hope we get that PS+ free version before I get my PS4 back Not that I'm into racing games but I do love taking in the sights.
This can't be only server problem. It has to do with net code to have taken this long
How can Evolution Studios be aiming to launch the free PlayStation Plus version as quickly as possible if it is working on DLC?
I agree with rastamadeus that they are using most of their time on the DLC.
This would also seem to be a incentive for more purchases for those who have been on the fence. (Hurry up and order if you want November’s planned premium add-on packs for free) is what I got from this.
My guess is that they are getting the DLC ready first because it will be easier and faster for them to complete it, and they can use it to try to compensate to the fans while they work in fixing the game itself.
I know the priority should be in fixing the game, of course.
It makes sense to me! Why cant they be working on both? If i was in a resteraunt and my meal was late i wouldnt expect the entire 15 strong kitchen staff to be beavering away to get me my pie n chips! That would be rediculous. So would an entire studio working on streamlining net code?
You can't complain about free...
Unless its the Plus Edition.
@Zep_Fan_81 Weeks? It's only been out just over a month! Try it now.
It's much improved over launch server side. Online play has been stable for at least 2 weeks for me.
Essentially, the only thing not working is the Challenges. Which is a shame for trophy hunters, but that's about it.
I'm happy for the feebie and tweaks to the systems.
It's a great driving game as is, if people would take five minutes to pull their heads out of their backsides - they'd see that.
But no, let the mob rule continue.
@rykkchii Difference is the other chefs aren't a continuous embarrassment to their owners, are they? Sony should be making sure the game works fine before releasing anything at all, paid or free. Or to your analogy, making sure they're not selling out of date food that's been humped by rats.
@KALofKRYPTON Nobody is dismissing what works works and from what I've heard, seen and had a quick go on it's a good game. Thing is for every person who's getting it working fine there's another who isn't and to say it's just challenges not working still isn't good enough - the game is for sale and does not work. But if you honestly think nearly six weeks is what it takes to get a game at near-working level after release - not even fully working - then it's you that needs to pull your head out your backside I'm afraid. The "mob rules" are people fed up with being told crap continuously about what's going on, still no PS+ version (not even a hint of it) and now releasing DLC before it's even working fully
What will the people get for waiting over a year for the PS+ version?
@KALofKRYPTON ill take your word and give it one more try! I was blown away with the graphics but i bought this for online functions and seriously ive never connected once for long enough to have a race.
I have a finite amount of time for my gaming so waiting for connections is no good for me.
I think the devs really should be removing craniums from orrafices personally.
@Punished_Boss_84 free dissapointment, come an get it folks
so the new trend for devs is to release unfinished games so they can watch the avalanche of arguments release on the internet. this is getting ridiculous, will every game release be broken or incomplete?
@KALofKRYPTON i couldn't have put it better. Great game! Push are guilty of fuelling the fire of hate too.
@SunnyShores yep! Welcome to Patchworld!
@SunnyShores agreed, where the hell has this trend come from? Maybe id say greedy shareholders forcing creative peoples hands. My guess.
Holy moly!
EDIT
@rastamadeus
It's not nearly six weeks though, as I said online racing has been stable for a couple of weeks. Working but unstable to varying degrees from about a week after launch.
Yes it's not ideal that the launch was awful, yes people have every right to be annoyed- but the ridiculous over the top reactions from people are a bit pathetic. The game itself isn't broken, the dev's and or Sony dropped the ball for the servers. It's not Battlefield, there's a fine example of a broken game on release.
There is one part of Driveclub that doesn't work. Yes I'd like it to work, and I expect that it will. In the meantime, Sony are going to hand out some free dlc, which is fine by me.
Told what crap? That they didn't test it properly and they're working to improve it? What's wrong with being told that?
Also, why does anyone really think that the dlc wasn't already done for the most part? Even of it wasn't, the team working on tracks and physics aren't going to be the network engineers.
People who are moaning about the Plus version are the best. You've obviously read the network issues with the game but want it free anyway - why? So you can moan about how your free game is broken?
Also, this 'trend'. Again. Driveclub has server issues, not game breaking bugs.
Sony and Microsoft are guilty of the emergence of the 'day one patch' on consoles.
Developers are pushed by publishers to maintain a release target. Rather than miss that target (and potentially waste huge sums of money already spent on marketing), the near final code goes gold with Sony and Microsoft imposing an ageed 'fine' on the publishers for releasing with a patch on day one. For most games, this patch doesn't fix much that's going to ruin the game. It's performance optimisations.
Obviously there are exceptions to this, but this perception of evil corporate persons laughing at you while sat on piles of money is a flawed one.
Its fun to go back to once in a while. I really want the weather system update the most.
Also, apologies for the apparent comment spamming!
Clearly it's a different part of the developer that's working on the network issues to those building tracks and car models. I think they're doing the right thing by preparing content for people to play, rather than twiddling their thumbs while a completely different part of the team fixes the online issues.
@get2sammyb Yeah, a lot of people are ignorant to the development process. Not every programmer has the skill to address any issue inthe game.
People there are designers, network, & environment people. All know what they know. An engineer wouldn't know how to get a pumpkin pie to taste better. They are doing all they can (no one wants to make bad video games) & it does suck but at least have an understanding of how things work internet lol.... sheesh..
Yay free stuff, that I'll probably end up not playing.
Literally haven't touched this in weeks.
@BetweenTheTrees Been feeling that same way lately, But I do realize that's an overstatement. Some big games having problems is the cause for the over generalization though, driveclub assassins creed, BF4. But there are tons of other games with better launches.
That said I do wish devs would sort of work at their own pace. quality over quantity.
