We’re often guilty of forgetting that not everyone owns a PlayStation 4 yet. While there’s no doubt that Sony’s next-gen system has raced out of the gates like an American shopper looking for a decent deal on Black Friday, the Japanese giant has only shipped a total of 13.5 million units to date. That means that there are dozens upon dozens of gamers around the globe, twiddling their thumbs waiting for greatness to be attained.
To be honest, we’d agree that the Japanese giant’s still got a little way to go before its latest machine reaches its full potential – but we’d still argue that now is the right time to upgrade. With some amazing bundles set to hit retail over the coming days – and Santa’s sleigh mere weeks away – here are five reasons why we reckon you should take the plunge, and buy a brand new PS4 this holiday.
The system’s a serious step up
As far as first years go, you’d be hard pushed to describe the PS4’s lineup as barren. We appreciate that a lot of the big games also deployed on the ageing PlayStation 3, but it’s difficult to enunciate to the uninitiated just what a difference Sony’s brand new box makes. The boost to 1080p, for example, makes a marked difference to the clarity of games, with last-gen releases looking muddier than a rain slicked rugby pitch by comparison.
But it’s not just the obvious graphical advantages that make the next-gen machine the best place to play the likes of Destiny, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and Far Cry 4, as the operating system also makes a difference. Whether it’s the speed at which you can sift through your software, or the fact that patches will download and install while you’re asleep, going back to the PS3 is close to impossible once you’ve become accustomed to the new device.
Worldwide Studios has been silent
You’ve heard the complaints by now: Sony has no exclusives. While we’ll be the first to agree that it’s had a somewhat quiet Christmas, long-term readers should realise that it’s clearly keeping a lot behind closed doors. Let’s look at this another way: Media Molecule, Sony Santa Monica, London Studio, Sony Bend, Quantic Dream, Polyphony Digital, Guerrilla Games, Japan Studio, and Sony Cambridge are all working on titles that we don’t know about.
We appreciate that buying into promise is a bad idea, but the Japanese giant tends to have a cyclical nature to its output, and 2015 is definitely looking like one of its ‘on’ years. It’s going to kick things off with the intriguing historical shooter The Order: 1886, and follow that up almost immediately with Bloodborne. The spring should see the arrival of Ratchet & Clank, with MLB 15: The Show due, too. And let’s not forget about a little game called Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
Third-party support is only going to get stronger
We get the impression that third-party publishers were less than eager to support the PS4 straight away. Cast your mind back to the conversation prior to this generation, and you’ll recall that it centred on the impending doom of the console as we know it. Sony – and, to a lesser extent, Microsoft – has proved that such scepticism was a load of rubbish, and hardware and software sales for the two new systems are strong.
And firms such as EA Games, Ubisoft, and Activision will be aware of that – and will be investing heavily as a consequence. That means that we’re going to see the output from these three major publishers – and many of the smaller companies, too – increase over the coming years, which will inevitably result in some stellar titles. Again, it hasn’t been a particularly bad year for new releases, but with the hardware having now proven itself, the platform is in the ideal position to profit from some truly groundbreaking games.
Sony’s way ahead of the game right now
There was a common criticism throughout the PS3 era that Sony was spending most of its time playing catch up. The PlayStation Network, for example, launched lacking key features, while its console’s complex architecture prompted numerous headaches for the engineers tasked with getting the best out of the CELL. These days, however, it’s arguably not only caught up with its competitors – but leapfrogged them in the process.
This has been evident since E3 last year, where it took a stance on used games, and forced Microsoft to react. However, it’s setting the generational pace in other more interesting ways than that. Project Morpheus, for instance, looks set to introduce commercially viable virtual reality into the wider marketplace for the first time, while PlayStation Now seems poised to set the precedent for game streaming. Elsewhere, initiatives like PlayStation Vue demonstrate long-term ambitions, which prove that the company’s thinking ahead.
Variety is the spice of life
The best thing about being a PlayStation fan is that Sony frequently signs strange games, and while these may not always hit the mark, they often offer something new. Journey, The Unfinished Swan, and Tokyo Jungle are all examples of these types of titles, and the PS4 is set to play host to dozens of similarly outlandish experiences next year. From the likes of The Tomorrow Children all the way through to RIME and WiLD, there’s some truly wacky stuff on the way.
And if variety happens to be your cup of tea, then we suspect that the amount of indie content available is only going to snowball as well. There’s so much stuff these days that we’re having to resort to full features just to catch up with the announcements, and the beauty is that there’s something for everyone. Sure, you may not be a fan of physical party games like Sportsfriends, but how many of you are looking forward to No Man’s Sky? The more options the better – and you’ll find plenty on the PS4.
Do you agree that now is the right time to purchase a PS4, or are we leaning far too heavily on future promise to properly convince you? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

If I buy a system this holiday, it will be an Xbox One. Right now it looks more attractive to me.
But I think I will wait for both Scalebound and Uncharted 4 to be closer to release to see which one is more interesting.
Yeah i agree Xbox one looks more attractive with just $350 and some cases a game with it plus the are more exclusives releases with quality like Sunset and Halo, but eventually when Uncharted 4 get out I'll be getting a PS4 and maybe in a new model with a price cut.
Does anyone else think it's kind of crazy that a lot of studios are still making current-gen games on last-gen systems, too? I went to school for business so I understand that it's going to increase their revenue. But, even MGS5 is going to release on last-gen systems and that's not coming out until sometime next year.
And in terms of exclusive games I have to say that currently Wii U is winning in that category. However, next year looks very promising for the PS4.
So games in 2015 is a reason for buying a PS4 during the holidays, something there sounds iffy.
Love my PS4. I find it hard to go back to last gen now. It seems so prehistoric!
I really don't see a reason to rush I think next holidays would be the perfect time for buying a PS4 2 years after console launch is normally the magical number for most consoles
No point in getting a PS4 right now. Interface changes are nice and all, but buying a system is all about games. And Sony is failing, big time, in that dept., so I will wait. When Sony stops shoving crappy indie titles down my throat to try to hide the fact their AAA studios need to get on the ball.......then I will think about a PS4.
And really, what's the hurry? The PS3 and my awesome backlog of games are just fine until I see the PS4 get a price drop, a bigger hard drive, and most importantly......some killer games.
@Punished_Boss_84 I can see that criticism, and I definitely had it in mind while writing this. The way I look at this, though, is that you buy a console as a long-term investment, right? And I personally feel that it's a safe investment as outlined by the points in the article.
I do understand why people would prefer to wait, but, I mean, if people are going to buy one for Uncharted 4 next Christmas anyway, why not jump in now and take advantage of all of the cool stuff that's both come this year and is on the way over the next 12 months.
For me, just the upgrades to operating system alone compared to the PS3 make it a worthy purchase.
@get2sammyb
Technically the more you wait, the cheaper the system may become, the more games will be available, and those will be cheaper too. So I see no benefit in getting it now for games that have not arrived yet.
I just imagine someone who wanted a PS3 exclusively for The Last Guardian. So future games are not always an incentive. Specially with underwhelming games filled with bugs, as we have been getting lately.
By next year there will be further price cuts to what the system costs now....so while I agree a console is a long term investment, if there isn't any software attracting buyers now they might as well wait and take advantage of what new deals the ongoing console wars bring in time for Christmas 2015, and some high profile games will be released reviewed and gamers opinions of them noted...instead of anticipating games worth playing on your new console only for them to be delayed or fall short and disappoint on release.
@sinalefa you beat me to writing pretty much the same thing lol.
@get2sammyb
People are waiting a long time for TLG to justify their PS3 investment... That's the issue and has been for a load of former Holiday titles.
Not that i expect Uncharted 4 to be ahem, delayed for that long. But a delay can happen and then you'll stuck with a paperweight until that time.
What I really like bout this gen is Remote Play and SharePlay, now that's some true next gen thinking and actually adding value to your service/ product. But other than that and the downloads while in stand-by, it's been an underwhelming year so far. Not just software wise, but you can already see the CPU lagging behind before this generation really started. You hear lots of people complaining bout the HDD and how Sony and MS should have spent $50 more, I feel they should've spent more on the CPU; I can always clear up some space, upgrading my cpu isn't possible and it really bugs me that it's already the bottleneck in an otherwise outstanding piece of hardware for the asking price.
I'd own a PS4 already if it weren't for the expensive $400 price tag...hopefully it's on sale for $250 New during Black Friday 2016.
Only other way of me getting one sooner is if I land a job or finally qualify for social security, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
@Bad-MuthaAdebis
Too right, its a great console and PSN has been very good all year. There were a couple of small hiccups due to a DDOS attack, but everyone was hit with that. There's a wealth of games to play which are usually better than the Xbox versions. Just look at all the games with a rating of 75 or over on metacritic for the PS4.
How can a console look more attractive just because its cheaper i would rather pay a little extra for quality than take the cheapskate option and buy a lesser console for the sake of saving £30 odd in the longterm playstation will dominate even more
I love articles like this, because it always reminds me that the world is full of variety and people with their loves, wants and desires are regularly so different to me (which is a great thing). Gaming is no different, and the number of opinions here that are so different to each other and mine is both amazing and fantastic. Oh the world would be boring if everyone was like me.
I wont try to argue or disagree with anything said above (everyone values different aspects of gaming), but I will say 1 thing. For anyone who does decide to take the plunge and buy a PS4 this holiday, I don't believe you will be disappointed and I believe afterwards your PS3 will get turned on much much less than you think it will. i.e. possibly never again.
@BLPs I'm not going to dispute any of your points because you're entitled to all of your opinions, but do object to the idea that I'm paid by Sony to post positive articles about the PS4 — we're uber critical on this site!
Do what you think is right fir you, i will just say that since I have a ps4, I am having a blast with it, playing almost every day, with a lot of variety in games... and only one issue at the end... the online part of driveclub...
Ps: halo is even more broken than driveclub...
Maybe in another year or two I might consider buying a PS4, right now there is zero reasons for me to buy one.
I have my PS3 with tons of games and I have the Wii U and when it comes to games right now the PS4 or Xbone can't touch the Wii U.
@sinalefa - comment #10 pretty much sums it up for me.
@sinalefa - Completely agree with you. When I decide to buy a PS4 it will probably be cheaper and some games that are availabe right now but don't interest me that much will be much cheaper.
@Savino I agree with you. The Wii U is a much better choice this holyday. Heck, for me even the Xbox One is a better choice due to more interesting and exclusive games, in my opinion.
I give big Credits for Sony to be able to keep silence among their First Party Studios.
Much better than announcing games that only will release 2 years later which usually follow by months of delay.
@get2sammyb - Sometimes its good not to buy something until its all there and the hype becomes reality. You have to admit PS TV not having Netflix is odd. And the Vita apoarently didnt legally live up to its claims.
https://www.yahoo.com/tech/s/sony-settles-govt-over-gaming-170443253.html
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of people who bought the handheld gaming console PlayStation Vita are in line for a partial refund from Sony because of questionable claims in its advertising.
I actually read most of that article before I realized it wasnt about PS TV.
I hope to get an Uncharted 4 bundle next year for $299.
BTW - Ive noticed all the game articles of late mentioning what system the game is on, so thanks to you and the team.
Oh, and Nintendo over promises too, your whole side of the world is waiting for TVii on Wii U 2 years on. Never gonna happen. Not that I imagine anybody bought a Wii U for that, but still.
@Savino hmm.. what are the titles that makes WiiU better exclusive this holiday season?
Great read, but I'm still going to wait until 2015. Until Dawn and The Order are the two titles that I've had my eye on for a long time now. Until then I'll happily stick with my Wii U and PS3.
@Savino - Hyrule Warriors is epic as well. Played Captain Toad at the mall yestetday and thats a fun little platformer, even if there is no jumping.
Not enough there just yet to justify a purchase, maybe 12th of december will change my mind.
Got wii u when it came then the next year the ps4 and this year ps tv and ps vita . I love the hardware this console has and as you can see I'm in for the long term investment. There's gonna be a lot coming this year with games and software updates. The console will become it's full potential this year and then it will be a very strong console.
