Here at Push Square Towers, we reviewed a mighty 38 titles in October, and, for the most part, they've given us plenty of enjoyment. 7s rained down from the gaming heavens, and there were plenty of 8s to shout about, too. Now, however, we're into the industry's busiest month, with blockbuster after blockbuster strutting onto the scene as publishers attempt to hype up their releases for the holiday rush. But let's not ponder about the present – let's take the time to look back into the past, and to October's Game of the Month.
As you may have guessed from the name of this article, stalker sim Alien: Isolation pounced on the prize. "When it’s on form, this is a nail biting affair, as you use sound and cunningly constructed items in order outwit your incredibly intelligent enemies," wrote editor Sammy Barker. Our head honcho awarded the Xeno-'em-up [Does that even work? - Ed] a solid 7, concluding that "outstanding audio and impressive art work make this more than just another bug hunt".
But who needs a 7/10 game when you could be playing Samurai Warriors 4? "Boasting a superb story mode, a delightful cast, and countless improvements to the Warriors formula, musou fanatics shouldn't even blink before buying," wrote this thoroughly impressed author, before presenting Koei's hack and slasher with a more than honourable 9. Of course, despite nabbing the highest score of the month, the winner of Push Square's esteemed award is voted for by the staff, and so Samurai Warriors 4 garnered just a single vote, despite its obvious, absolute brilliance. Don't worry Yukimura, we'll never forgive them.
Going back to horror, the year's scariest month also played host to The Evil Within, which, like Alien: Isolation, fell to our fearless editor to review. "Legendary director Shinji Mikami doesn’t disappoint in the gameplay department, forcing you to get creative with your plentiful combat options due to an unending absence of resources," he wrote, probably trying desperately to keep hold of his senses, before concluding: "It’s here that developer Tango Gameworks finds the breathless brilliance within." Sammy tossed a 7 at the game, and then hid beneath his bed sheets until we came to see what all of the screaming was about.
Meanwhile, pun-tastic reviewer Kell Andersen landed himself a look at yet another indie title, and this time, it was the colourful and charming Pix the Cat, which he called "a fiendishly addictive arcade experience". Once again proving that he's a massive indie apologist and should really be stopped before he gives some 2D piece of rubbish a 10, Kell gave Cat Pixels or whatever it's called an 8. He voted for it, too, like the awful, awful person that he is.
Our final nominee for Game of the Month was the highly anticipated Freedom Wars, which also latched onto a 7. "Freedom Wars is a solid action RPG," wrote this particular author, adding that its best features are "its deliciously dystopian premise and intense boss battles". Alas, freedom was just out of reach for the handheld hunt-'em-up, and, much like many a space marine, it succumbed to the terrors of the Xenomorph.

Can't disagree with that pick for a change. Superb game for those fond of the Alien franchise. I did vote 'Other' though as I've been enjoying Shadow Warrior a lot. You can never have too much wang it seems...
"Once again proving that he's a massive indie apologist and should really be stopped before he gives some 2D piece of rubbish a 10."
Damn, I've been discovered! For reals, though, I am proud to be arguably the biggest indie apologist on a site full of indie apologists.
The Evil Within despite its nonsensical story. It just felt like a little bit of a throw back and I really like that about it.
@Gamer83 Yeah, The Evil Within's an awesome game. It's a bit archaic in places, but the combat is supremely entertaining.
Lords Of The Fallen for me. Great game
I'm looking forward to alien isolation, when I get my dualshocks fixed. Pffft. I voted for shadow warrior as I haven't played alien yet.
Wow, all of those 'Other' votes!
@k_andersen Angry mob: "There he is, get him!"
Shadow of Mordor was an October release (in the UK anyway as it was a Sept 30th release in US). That would get my game of year vote (so far). I didn't think it got a mention September's either though. Otherwise I would say The Evil Within from your list.
@Muppet Shadow of Mordor was in September's Game of the Month vote, but it lost by one vote to Destiny if I remember correctly.

@Bad-MuthaAdebis I just picked up Alien Isolation and aside from it being pretty difficult at times I love it!!! If you do get it I highly recommend playing it at night with a good pair of headphones for the maximum experience. I would also recommend not playing it on the hardest difficulty setting as its very, very hard. I normally play 90% of my games on hard but Alien Isolation was a little to hard. Also if you live in the UK try getting it from Tesco as aside from it being cheaper than most places they have the "NOSTROMO EDITION" for the same price. The store called GAME said that was exclusive to them when you pre-ordered the game.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy it buddy.
@ShogunRok So it was. It actually had the highest score in the reviews and the vote but still somehow managed to lose out to Destiny. LoL.
@WARDIE I already picked up the Ripley edition for half price from game, includes both of the main DLC, I probably won't be back on the PS4 until the weekend unless I decide to waste my money on a third Dualshock 4
@Muppet shadow of Mordor was game of the month but when they decrypted the results it lost out to destiny.
I got Alien: Isolation for the fantastic and princely sum of £24.99 this weekend and I'm just starting it now...excellent price for a well reviewed game from a franchise I love...well Alien and Aliens, I'm indifferent to the rest.
@Bad-MuthaAdebis I got the Ripley Edition at game as well...funny they were selling the Nostromo edition with less bonus content for the same price. It's a bargain at £24.99.
@Bad-MuthaAdebis How come you're on a third DuelShock 4? Are you having the same issue as myself. My analog rubber grips have started peeling. I took it back to the store called GAME as thats where I got it from and they said I'd have to wait several weeks for a replacement, which I thought was bang out of order as I obviously wouldn't be able play my PS4 without a controller. Im thinking of giving Sony a call to see if they'll replace it for me.
I laughed more at the article than the video, so what does that mean?
Okay, so earlier in the year, we posted this article on upcoming RPGs in 2014: https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2014/04/feature_eight_promising_ps4_ps3_and_vita_rpgs_in_2014
Freedom Wars won the poll, and so many people were hyped for it. Yet it has 0 votes as Game of the Month here. Granted, different users and all that, but still — what happened?
My playthrough of Alien has been god-awful. And I mean that in a good way, seeing as how it's a horror game!
@WARDIE rubber bits gone, both l2 triggers snapped, nevermind, atleast theyre selling replacements on ebay
@Munkyknuts yep, ridiculously good deal, I think though that some of those DLC are only a few quid on the PSN store, may be wrong.
