Apparently, today marks the anniversary of the PlayStation 4’s release in North America, which means that you should probably take a moment to toast your super system – all to the backdrop of 50 Cent’s infectious In Da Club. Seriously, though, has it really been a year already? This particular author remembers getting up extraordinarily early in order to cover the New York live event 12 months ago.
Writing on the PlayStation Blog, the ever animated Shawn Layden shared a few words about the system’s success. “With blockbuster games from our Worldwide Studios like inFAMOUS: Second Son, MLB 14: The Show, Killzone: Shadow Fall, The Last of Us Remastered, and new innovative features like Share Play and SHAREfactory, PS4 has had an unprecedented first year,” he said. No mention of DriveClub?
Layden also went on to acknowledge another important milestone that PlayStation’s celebrating this year: the 20th anniversary of the PSone. “In the weeks leading up to this special day, I’m happy to announce that we have a series of blog posts planned to take a look back at twenty years of PlayStation,” he teased. “Those of you who have been with us from the beginning, along with those who are new to the PlayStation family, are in for a special treat, so please stay tuned.”
The likeable executive concluded with the obligatory thank you. To be honest, we do like a bit of gratitude – but the gushing is getting a bit much as far as we’re concerned. “Thanks again for your incredible support over the years and please know that you, the PlayStation Nation, are in our hearts and minds every day reminding us to continue delivering the best gaming experiences possible and always ensure that PlayStation is truly the best place to play.” See what we mean?
We reckon that it’s been a decent first year for the PS4, but if you’d like to take a look at our musings in more detail, please do check out our report card which was published earlier in the month. We suppose that all that’s left for us to say here, then, is: happy birthday.

Every Sony executive is likeable apparently...
On topic, don't really think there's been much worth celebrating about PS4's first year. Now the anniversary of the PSone? Yes, cause for celebration, unfortunately haven't seen too much about it around the web with all the bug-ridden releases taking center stage lately.
@Gamer83 Sony be celebrating like Scrooge McDuck.
@get2sammyb
Good for Sony. Game wise I didn't find much worth celebrating this year on PS4, except the two inFamous games.
@Gamer83 That's fair enough. I think it's been fine, but I do agree that it could be better. Here's hoping 2015 brings a little more to get excited about - and some better QA!
@get2sammyb
Assuming it gets released in 2015 at least Uncharted 4 should be good as well as MGS V: The Phantom Pain and The Witcher 3. I'm worried about pretty much everything else though on PS4 and X1, even games from Sony and MS. Both have proven to let some inexcusable bs happen to games they publish.
Nothing that released this year convinced me to purchase a PS4, but this generation of gaming is only just getting started. Almost every PS console has eventually been worth it, so I'm expecting the PS4 to eventually have a lot of games I want to play.
Love my PS4 <3
I think we're all trying to forget driveclub 😢
Happy birthday PS4! It's 's been a year of ups and downs, but I can't say I regret buying you at all. Here's to a bright future ! Cheers
I want to eat that cake
I love my ps4. Got unity today and I am really enjoying it. Not seen any of the glitches yet but have seen the frame rate issue. Black flag ps4 is still my favourite ac game though. Happy birthday ps4!
Oh and I was one of those to own the ps1 on launch 20 years ago to. Fond memories!
I have to say I have been pleased with the year so far. Alot of great games came out like Resogun, both Infamous titles, Strider, Dust and a bunch of others that I know I am forgetting. Yeah there was the problem with Driveclub but that has only been the only really big problem. I am looking forward to the PS4s second year.
A little gift I made for the playstation nation for the PS4's first birthday

Cake looks like play dough...happy b day PS4. No regrets buying you. Drive club and a.c. unity was a big let down. Last of us, tomb raider and a.c. 4 was pretty good. Hope 2015 is better.
Ironic that he decided to do stats again, Well at least it's not at an event this time.
Speaking of Driveclub, something has been announced: compensation.
In my opinion a little less patting themselves on the back and a little more work on the places they're lacking would be nice! It has been a pretty good year though. I've really enjoyed games from both camps. Can't wait for bloodborne tho!
First year had way too many ports of lastgen games that really just put me off buying one but that's just my opinion.
God I remember getting my psone one evening at blockbuster when they came out. It had destruction derby and I was so blown away. I remember watching the intro parts thinking one day games will be like that and now they are! That console done the rounds with all my friends, was value for money as not everyone had or could afford consoles back then, different to now. Shareplay was my rucksack and bmx:-)
Really enjoyed my PS4 so far + Because of PS PLUS i have played LOADS of different types of games to
I can die in peace with my PS4. Habby B-day Playstation.
Lol @ the cake! =D
Love it.
@Jazzer94
I think the problem was that the last console cycle went on for a stupid length of time. A lot of games like GTA V, like The Last of Us, Tomb Raider, etc, would've been full on PS4/X1 releases in 2013 because we would've been in the sweet spot for that consoles had the 360 and PS3 been replaced as the primary consoles no later than 2011, which is what should've happened. Five years really should be the standard for console, it always was before. The fact PS3 went 7 and 360 8 was utterly ridiculous and those stupid machines are still holding games back now because devs don't want to move on.
@Gamer83 amen to that! I'm sick of cross gen titles!
@Mrskinner and by that I mean games for both gen platforms, not spruced up ports.
Happy 1st Birthday PS4 .
