Well, this is a surprise – and it makes the absence of a themed hardware bundle for the holidays all the more confusing. The physical version of Minecraft: PS Vita Edition has secured the third-biggest debut ever for the PlayStation Vita in the UK, with only launch titles Uncharted: Golden Abyss and FIFA Football getting off to stronger starts.
Fascinatingly, the packaged portable release also represents the best ever Minecraft launch on a PlayStation platform, with the popular PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 editions both selling less at retail than the hotly anticipated handheld port. As far as we’re concerned, this proves that with the right software there is very much still a market for the misunderstood machine – it’s just a shame that Sony appears to have given up.

I can't believe they haven't made a custom hardware SKU for this game. Just make a green Vita Lite, put a Creeper's face on the rear touchpad, done. Clearly it would sell incredibly well this Christmas...
Sigh.
I was thinking that maybe they can't make a Vita bundle for some reason. Shouldn't they sign a deal with Microsoft or something to do it? It would sell great though.
@belmont That's the only excuse they have, to be honest. It's possible, but I'm not really sure why Microsoft would block it - after all, they don't really have anything in competition with the Vita. Besides, if they were going to do it, I imagine everything would have been signed and sealed long ago.
Missed opportunity.
Vita doesnt exist at this point.
This is the time of year as a father of 2 boys I spend a lot of time scouring the game ads, and I cant recall ever seeing a Vita or a Vita game unless it was in a bundle w/ a PS TV.
Example - TRU had a B1G1 40% off all PS3 and PS4 games.
I just don't understand Sony sometimes, this was obviously a Bundle worthy game more so than Borderlands 2.
Third biggest ever? So ten whole people got it? On a serious note I really don't get the fuss over it not having a bundle, kids who want Minecraft have it on their consoles and parents phones/tablets. "Hey Daddy, can you buy me a machine for over £100 so I can play Minecraft, you know, the game I already have?" is, in nearly every house going to get the same answer, "No." A year, or longer, ago maybe but now it's too late. Like everything Sony do with the Vita.
The vita edition is the first I have played and I must say it's perfect for a handheld
@rastamadeus Yea, exactly this.
I think the people that reckon Sony missed out on a huge opportunity by not having a bundle need to step out of the Sony Universe for a second and realise just how irrelevant the Vita is. Minecraft on the Vita is not a big deal for almost everyone. The amount of people who would buy a Vita to play a game that is on almost everything else is so small its not worth talking about.
@get2sammyb I promised I would laugh, so that's what I'm going to do.
What is with the Vita hate?
@Enobmah_Shards I don't think anyone hates the Vita. I certainly don't. In fact I bought mine at launch. I think we're all just disappointed Sony has all but given up on the platform after just 2/1/2 years at market. When you release a platform, gamers buy it as an investment with the understanding that that platform will receive full support for at least five years. Sony pulled the plug on Vita in just half that time, affecting 9 million gamers who own one.
I mean, I understand third-party support is out of their control. Like Nintendo and the Wii U, you can't force third parties to bring their games. But what you can do is bring everything you've got. There's so many things Sony could be doing right now and could have been doing for some time now. Resistance Burning Skies and CoD BO2 Declassified was kind of the writing on the wall for the system in a way. It was indicative of how much they valued the platform.
Unfortunately, it seems as if 2014 will be the Vita's last stand. Final Fantasy X, a few PS2 ports and collections, Natural Doctrine, Freedom Wars and Tales of Hearts R. The releases definitely slowed down this year as compared to years past. And there's really nothing in the pipeline whatsoever. In fact they're just taking the Vita's games now and putting them on the PS4. Gravity Rush 2 is surely scrapped or converted to a PS4 game.
I really like the Vita. I very much dislike the fact that no games are in the pipeline for it. A platform needs games. Third parties bailed, and now Sony has bailed. The system will be little more than obscure, mediocre Japanese localizations without English, as we already see happening now with the last few games this year.
Perhaps Sony will redeem themselves with their next handheld? It's possible, but I don't know if I trust buying one from them anymore. Clearly they have no problem jumping ship when things get rough, and I don't want to buy another handheld that's rendered impotent in just 2 years time.
I was planning to buy Minecraft on Vita, physical copy, but for some reason Best Buy never listed it for preorder. The day it came out I found it on Amazon, full of one star reviews from customers pissed off that the physical game only came with a paper voucher slip and a code to download. No game. No manual. Just an empty case with a download code. I would've been pissed too had I fallen for that.
So Idk if I want to buy physical for PS4 (I like my physical releases) or buy digital on Vita and get the PS4 version for $5. Decisions, decisions....
@JaxonH If Sony doesn't impress me at the PlayStation Experience event for the vita, then I will be disappointed...
@Enobmah_Shards
I'd be impressed if they even mention the Vita at the Playstation Experience event
I personally think this year has been good for the vita, I post regularly to my Facebook group and there is plenty of games coming out next year, well this year has been good if you like jrpg's that is
