There's an image from Nintendo doing the rounds that claims that the Wii U had the most great games this year. It uses a combination of Metascore and user score from aggregation website Metacritic to draw its conclusion, which struck us as an unusual fusion of information. Perhaps this is because the aforementioned website's data actually paints a different picture.
To be clear: we have no real horse in this race, and we're not saying that we necessarily agree β we're just posting the statistics as we see them. And according to the above publication, it's actually the PlayStation 4 that had the most great games this year. The site has come to this conclusion by totalling up the number of titles with a critics average of over 90, and Sony's system won with five.
Of course, the real failing of this metric is that all of the titles tallied are re-releases. Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us Remastered were the two best scoring titles across all platforms in 2014, attaining an average of 96 and 95 respectively. Meanwhile, the excellent Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition - Reaper of Souls, Rayman Legends, and Fez all scored 90 apiece.
Nintendo pulled away in the exclusives stakes, with nine well received titles over 75 to the PS4's disappointing four. Both were destroyed, however, by the PC, which managed to rack up a whopping 45 top titles not available anywhere else. If history has taught us anything, though, a lot of these will make the jump to consoles in the not too distant future.
Incredibly, there were over 146 titles rated on the PS4 this year β almost as many as on the Xbox One and Wii U combined. These weren't all bad either, as the system's average Metascore for the year was 72.0, compared to 72.4 and 66.8 on Microsoft and Nintendo's machines respectively. This is quite an achievement actually, as more content can tend to pull averages down.
And to be fair, Sony's latest system did have its share of bad games in 2014. Basement Crawl was the worst of these, but Fluster Cluck and Air Conflicts: Vietnam all netted abysmal scores, too. In addition to The Last of Us Remastered, the best exclusives on PlayStation this year were Guilty Gear Xrd Sign, inFAMOUS: Second Son, and LittleBigPlanet 3. Not a bad lineup.
Of course, we'll reiterate, this data is far from conclusive β and is actually easily skewed. Consider, for example, that Grand Theft Auto V scored a point higher on the Xbox One than on the PS4, primarily because that version was covered by just 11 critics compared to 63 on the latter. It's these kinds of averaging issues that can unbalance the information, so it's far from concrete.
And, naturally, none of this takes into account personal preference...
Update: Yes, as pointed out in the comments, the original Nintendo tweet pertains to the entire lifespan of its systems, and not 2014 alone. Sammy has been taken out into the backyard and flogged with a leather belt for this error. Apologies to all!

@BLPs Actually, Nintendo took data of over 85 and a User Score of over 8.5 - and we all know how meaningful the latter is. Also, I didn't use a Metric of over 90 - Metacritic did. I'm taking the information from their site...
Am I reading this wrong?
Nintendo's claim is based on both critic and user scores. You then go on to talk about PS games based soley on critic scores?? If you change the metric then you will change the result. That's normally how it goes.
This article is so weird. You are trying to imply Nintendo is incorrect by providing different statistics based off different data. I would understand if Nintendo's statement was wrong, but...
Anyone who takes the overall user score on Metacritic seriously has no argument to begin with, quite frankly. I could go on there right now and rate every game I don't think is perfect with a 0.
@eLarkos Yes, because as @shogunrok points out, user scores on Metacritic are nonsense. I didn't mean to turn this into a fanboy fight anyway, but it looks like I failed...
Lesson learned!
@get2sammyb I also have no horse. I get what you are trying to portray in the article which is Sony had great games. I just think it's wrong to change data sets and then say "Hey, Sony actually won".
I still believe Nintendo wins for having the two highest rated, exclusive, non rerelease/remake/remaster on Smash U and Bayo 2.
@get2sammyb Fail is right... From the headline on out, you've changed the argument. "Actually, PS4 had the most great games this year" Sorry, no one was talking about this year. Nintendo was talking about games available on the Nintendo platforms ... you aren't even in the same discussion, and using a different data set say they're wrong. Maybe you need a reading comprehension course?
I am a Nintendo/Sony guy - but in my view it isn't even close.
The Wii U destroys the PS4 when it comes to games. There is nothing I want right now for the PS4, were as I can't stop giving my money to Nintendo.
@daveh30 Sign me up!
Righto, I think that's enough. It's clearly stated in the article that the information is indeed skewed, it's simply another perspective and a one that's relevant since we're a PlayStation-centric site.
Conversations are fine, but no one's questioning your choice in games or consoles.
Dem fighting words You're brave Sammy, I'll give you that.
@ShogunRok it's not relevant if you misquote the original statement. Its an argument against a statement that was never made. At no time did Nintendo claim to have the most great games released this year.
@eLarkos No, you're right, it was a poor way to frame the article, and it clearly hasn't come across as intended. I hold my hands up for that - but hopefully there's still some value to be gleaned from the article.
I'm so confused, I have no idea what's going on here.
Regarding Metacritic - the value to me is that it is equal to all. In sports your teams loses and you say it's b/c the refs are bad. Well the refs are calling the game for both teams, so both teams should get the same amount of good and bad calls. Metacritic may not be accurate to reality, but at long as it's equal across all platforms and you only compare Metacritic scores to other Metacritic scores and not some other "more accurate" ratings system then your comparisons should be fine.
I feel the same way about VGChartz. Mention VG and somebody will invariably mock you and poo poo VG. Ask what other data to use besides VG and you get the sound of silence. Everybody is quick to judge, but nobody seems to have a better solution, so I say you use what you have, knowing that even if the numbers aren't accurate, the inaccuracies should be common enough across all platforms that they are comparable w/in VG.
@daveh30 Yes, I was wrong. I've added an update to the article to make this clear. I apologise for the error; thanks for pointing it out.
@daveh30 It is still relevant in the sense that the scores add up if we're just counting this year, though.
And even then, there's no reason to insult the author like you did in your original post. Point out an error by all means, but there's no need to get snarky.
Wow. I feel sorry for @get2sammyb here. All these offended snowflakes irate over an article. Bu bu but Nintendo's exclusives! Honestly, who gives a smeg?
@get2sammyb How was the flogging?
@wagleton Painful!
In terms of console exclusives in my opinion this year
1. Wii u
2. Xbox One
3. Ps4
Other than the last of us remastered and infamous I am struggling to think what else has been awesome on ps4 that I couldn't get on xbox one granted I would rather play multiplatform titles on ps4. The wii u has had a pretty good year, some great games released if only more people bought one.
@get2sammyb This certainly went down well with people.
Edit: Wii U still had the best exclusives this year regardless in terms of sheer quality.
A christmas flogging you say, disagreement about video game scores you say. Seems like a routine game industry christmas. I am happy with the ps4. It was a long term investment, much like a christmas turkey. The good stuffs coming, everything so far has been delightful butter tarts, tasty but not filling enough.
On a side note, is anybody else excited for Christmas noobs in COD. Its the one time a year I feel like a hotshot playing that game. LOL
"This is quite an achievement actually, as more content can tend to pull averages down."
I hope you realize that's not how it works: the more scores you get, less likely is it a really low or really high score will influence your average much.
Console loyalty and metacritic aside here, let's talk games. Let's be adults about this and think about what 2014 brought PS4 and Vita owners and what Nintendo gave their customers: Nintendo won hands down. I don't take re releases into account, just like we didn't when Nintendo released WindWaker. Nintendo broke the trend of delivering incomplete or even broken games and offered an excellent range of games we will all long remember. PS4 just didn't have as much memorable games as the Wii U did and that's fine; 2015 will be better and both Sony and Nintendo have some crazy shit planned for us. I believe in 2014 Nintendo console owners were the most lucky, in 2015 we'll all "win"
No doubt that the PS4 is getting some great games like J Stars, Uncharted 4 and a Street Fighter V but I gotta say that Wii U had the best games this year IMO.
@LordBagardo OUYA, what's that? But seriously how is it?
@gr8apeb8 I think it might be a flavour of Ribena. Tastes a bit like stale bread to be honest
@LordBagardo LOL hahahaha
Bless Nintendo for trying but I know which console I've played on the most and it wasn't my Wii U or 3DS!
It was even worse for me being a Nintendo fan as I don't even like the Smash series. Anyone like me that doesn't really had slim pickings on their platforms this year.
Can't wait for Zelda and Xenoblade next year but I think my PS4 will have more of my game time in 2015 too...
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Yes that was my opinion do I actually have to type that when making a small remark?
They're both right. I think the Wii U has the most great games and many others think the PS4 has the most. It's all a matter of opinion
Also, we should accept that Microsoft is bad. They didn't even show up at the VG Awards show while Nintendo and Sony stole the show
@Boerewors True I suppose. I was just thinking from the perspective that if you've got ten 7s and two 8s, you're going to be lower than if you've got three 7s and two 8s.
You're absolutely right, though, I should probably do my maths GCSE again, too...
The problem with this boasting by Nintendo is that despite the critical acclaim it simply isn't turning into big sales, especially when their biggest games (Mario Kart and Smash) are available on 3DS as well. Tbh Nintendo were asking for trouble the moment they showed off the gamepad cos it just puts off 3rd party support which was something they badly needed when they were slow coming out with big exclusives.
@LordBagardo I raise you Peach Ice Tea.
Critics, especially American ones, always seem to give with big scores to Nintendo, which mostly remakes the same games. Maybe nostalgia for their childhood?
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Your kind of right, when posting on the internet it's best to be crystal clear to avoid situations of misinterpretation. Reason Wii U is my pick this year DKCTF, MK8, Bayonetta 2 and SSB4 all very different and excellent games and I'm a fan of each series especially Smash.
@LordBagardo @get2sammyb
@Vorlon Please elaborate how all they do is remakes preferably with examples.
@Jazzer94 Good grief - where can I acquire some of this delicious looking beverage?
@get2sammyb Well UKwise I've only been able to find Snapple at Tesco http://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/search/default.aspx?searchBox=snapple&icid=tescohp_sws-1_snapple
unfortunately I've never seen the peach tea flavour over here so on special occasions (birthday/christmas) I buy some from Amazon (overkill I know but its my fav) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Snapple-Peach-Tea-Bottles-Pack/dp/B00CMSM4NY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419358054&sr=8-1&keywords=snapple+iced+tea apart from that most US stores stock Snapple.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi PS3 version of Bayo was bad (I had it) not a good port so thankfully I got the Bayonetta 1+2 pack and able to experience it at its best. I'm not as big on the 2D Mario stuff these days myself but games of the calibre of DKCTF should not be as under appreciated the game deserved so much more attention really is up there for best 2D platformer.
Well I still feel the PS4 is more worth having than the Wii U at this point. The only games I'm sad to be missing out on at the moment are Smash, Monster Hunter, and... well nothing else comes to mind really. And Smash would set me back way too much money from the get-go (console + game + 4 "wii-u approved" gamecube controllers). Then the Wii U really has nothing I care for as far as 2015 is concerned.
Also I really hate Nintendo's tendencies to give statistics based on self-purposing timelines, then claiming it's just fact. I remember when 2 months after Wii U came out, they claimed to have more HD games than PS4 and X1. Obviously since they were out a year earlier, shouldn't they?
@Vorlon Your probably gonna get dogpiled for that comment, but I can sorta see where your coming from there. With me growing up on SEGA & not going back to Nintendo till a later time, I've always been curious as to the constant lavishing on Nintendo as I've enjoyed their games but never really thought they were the bees knees. It's more than likely nostalgia, Hell I'm guilty of it with SEGA stuff still these days even tho they don't do consoles anymore. Just that SEGA symbol is enough to turn my head on games they publish. It's quite telling for myself that the best Nintendo game I've played thus far is Skyward Sword, one thats usually never mentioned when people talk Nintendo.
End of the day if you really give a damn about your machine having better games than another you need to take a look at yourself and grow up. Who cares what machine you have other than yourself? If you can play the games you want that's all that matters. The Wii U has amazing games, the PS4 has amazing games, the Xbox One has amazing games, PC has amazing games, 3DS has amazing games and Vita has amazing games. It's that simple.
@Vorlon There's a difference in using the same characters and rehashing the same game, something people seem to accept when it suits them. COD rehashes the same concepts in each game but gives you a slightly different story, Mario has a single level other people would make a whole game out, Tomb Raider is just bigger and prettier each time. Three random examples there. You see a COD and you know its the same. You see a Mario - or any platformer for that matter - and you think it's the same til you play it. The reason I still play Mario games is each is different, NSMB2 is no way near a rehash of Mario 2 for example. I grew up a Sega fanboy, and it's where my heart still belongs, but once Sonic went crap I tried a Mario, something I had detested as a kid, and realised how wrong I was and how much I had to catch up on.
@MadchesterManc Or rather than nostalgia it's an opinion, no? @get2sammyb can't see our love of Hatsune Miku, doesn't mean he's wrong (well, almost) just of a different taste. If as a reviewer of any medium you mark something higher up for any reason, be it nostalgia or bribe, you shouldn't be reviewing. Same the other way ("too much water"). Must be hundreds of people on nostalgia trips, all in the industry, to apply that "constant lavishing" on Nintendo. I for the life of me can't see why anyone would give any Naughty Dog game a mark higher than 5, doesn't mean I think they're all on a Crash Bandicoot nostalgia trip.
@Cloud7794 This just in! Company uses information (true or not) to make their product seem better than the opposition. Well I never. That sort of dark trickery would never happen in any other way of life... Oh... it does, daily. And Sony have been guilty of it many times as well - as have nearly every company to have ever existed.
@rastamadeus @MadchesterManc I actually bought Hatsune Miku (the first one) when it was on sale the other day, as I figured I should give it a fair shake. Haven't played it yet, but I'm definitely intrigued.
To be honest, it's not the art or the gameplay that I'm wary of - I'm just not sure the music is for me. And just to be clear, I'm not opposed to cheesy pop music in anyway - just not a fan of the vocaloid thing.
@rastamadeus I feel your comment directed at vorlon could have been written by myself. Even down to the SEGA kid catching up on Mario.
Games r gud.
So is Bloody Mandy ice tea. Hells yeah.
@rastamadeus The whole 'its an opinion' notion is an amusing one in that it's usually held as a double standard due to confirmation bias. Case in point being @Vorlon opinion of there being a potential nostalgic bias in the media for Nintendo, which has seemingly been dogpiled by those that disagree. If the gaming press is allowed a free pass on that point on the basis of it being their 'opinion', why is @Vorlon not allowed the same privilege of being able to have an independent opinion? Because his opinion differs? Offends? There's gonna be people out there that play & enjoy Nintendo games, like myself, without viewing them as highly as others. If people have a problem with that opinion, well, thats their problem.
Sony machine is not very good on exclusives or games in general. Hope they do better next but there not even coming close to Nintendo's range of software.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi
Never go based off user scores, but I'm sure you know that.
@Cloud7794
I know it is your opinion but if you can't find anything interesting in the 2015 schedule then wow. There's much more than Smash and Monster Hunter to like but that's just your opinion.
Also, " I remember when 2 months after Wii U came out, they claimed to have more HD games than PS4 and X1." Could you rephrase that, neither self-proclaimed 'next gen' machine was out yet.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi If some one asked me if which out of Streets of Rage 2 and TLOU I'd probably choose SOR2 because is such a fun game, I'll add that has nothing to do with nostalgia as I didn't play it till Wii VC.
What a weird article lol, shifting goal posts and all.
I'm enjoying all three systems, but WiiU pulled ahead. Between all the indie releases, VC, couch co-op (this is a big one for me), and high quality games that didnt need 6GB patches to sort-of kind-of work, it takes my vote easily. I'll be playing SmashBros for years.
XBO and PS4 arent just calling it quits though, both have had great releases between exclusives, 3rd parties, and indies. My biggest problems with these systems are quality control, lack of couch co-op, and the ridiculous install sizes of these new games that play a lot like old games...just with bigger patches.
So bored of 'scores' already. More often than not I read a review and seriously doubt whether the reviewer even played the game.
7.8 - Too much scores.
