It wasn’t part of the PlayStation Experience keynote, but Sony Santa Monica has just confirmed that it’s working on a brand new God of War, presumably for the PlayStation 4. While no assets, logos, or screenshots have been released, director Cory Barlog – who’s most famous for helming God of War II – confirmed the tidbit as part of a retrospective panel at Sony’s fan convention earlier today.
We suspect that this will probably remain a secret until E3 next year, when it’s sure to be ready for a full unveiling. It’s going to be interesting to see whether the developer attempts to prolong the already drawn out plot of protagonist Kratos, or switches things up with a new mythology and cast of characters. Are you excited for more from this series? Scream obscenities in the comments section.

To be fair, an announcement with nothing to show would have gone far worse. They made the right call here.
Just put up a forum post about it, damn Push square why do have to be so quick
I still love my idea of a Norse setting would be cool.
Now we're talking
That's what everyone want! More big games from first party studios, great news!
Source? This is great but nobody would believe me lol.
@ScreamAimFire99 They've deleted the Tweet, but it was there a minute ago. We'll try to see if someone saved a screenshot.
I absolutely adore the God of war games so this is great news
@ScreamAimFire99
Had to happen at some point.
Woohoo!! Wonder if we'll play as a new character though.
@get2sammyb Awesome. Thank you! I hope Kratos is still in the next one.
Why would they delete the tweet? This is as surprising as snow in winter.
Well... I didn't think this series needed to continue, but as a graphical showpiece it was only barely matched by Uncharted last gen, I suppose.
I'll be interested to see if the game retains the quality of the originals, or if it takes after the most recent entry.
Greatness Awaits
I love the God Of War games, but this was a predictable announcement. However, in my opinion, they need to do a few things to make this a success:
1. If they are going to make more lazy, multiplayer focused garbage like Ascension, don't waste our time.
2. Give us a new character to use in the series. Kratos story was wrapped up nicely in GOW3. Don't turn Kratos into a joke mascot who overstayed his welcome.
3. Evolve the gameplay accordingly. Beatiful looking button mashers are fun, but give us something new.
Considering that God of War III was one of the best looking games that I've ever played I can't wait to see what the series will look like on PS4.
Now, this would've been cool to hear about at the keynote. Whatever at least it got announced, so that's a +1 for the event as a whole.
God of War looked great on the PS3, can't wait to see what it looks like on the PS4.
An egyptian GoW would be rad. God of War: Wrath of Osiris
Love for God of war games.
I'm shocked, but also happy. Anyways, here's hoping it's as good as Ascension supposedly is.
removed my comment; might spoil for someone
Wait. What? I thought the surprises were over?
my guess a semi-reboot a new protaganist and new story/mythology but set in the same world as the others
maybe we will finally know what happened to Kratos too
@ToddlerNaruto
Ascension was, easily, the worst GOW game. By far. Not even close.
The game was a sad attempt at turning GOW into a multiplayer game & they threw in a mediocre campaign because they knew nobody in their right mind would purchase a GOW multiplayer only title. It's even in the "making of" videos on the disc. The multiplayer was the main focus, the story & campaign is barely even mentioned.
Let me put it this way......I own every GOW game, w/ the exception of Ascension because I traded it into Gamestop for fear it may infect the rest of my collection with it's mediocrity.
So you aren't missing anything, if you haven't played it.
Let's hope before they start serious work on it they play Bayonetta 2 to death, make an immense amount of notes and make a decent game (first had potential, rest I've been bored with) rather than a spectacle with some hack and slash action in. Bayonetta makes you feel bad ass and like you're in charge, God Of War just plods along until the next, admittedly usually stunning, set piece then makes you plod along again until set piece two and repeat too credits.
I enjoyed playing 2 of the GoW games but thats it...I think there's too much violence in it for my taste. Weird, cause I love feeling powerful in Bayonetta 2 or messing around in games like Bulletstorm or Fallout 3. I don't know why, maybe the same reason I didn't enjoy seeing Lara die a gruesome death in Tomb Raider. Poppin' eyes and stuff like that haha I get so squeamish.
...Kratos could use some more sex-appeal. I mean, they should put as much time into creating men as they do conjuring up women in the GoW games.
I hope they change the mythology, create more believable magical worlds and mix up the formula. I must admit I'd rather see such capable studios create a new IP. Oh well, as long as the game is fun to play! Feeling badass/delight is a must.
@Godsire- I never knew that Ascension was that terrible, but for completion sake I'll still be both buying and playing it eventually.
(it just has lower priority now, so thanks for the info)
@ToddlerNaruto
Keep in mind, that's just my opinion. But even with taking that into account......Ascension is widely regarded as the worst GOW game, by far.
But I hope you like it. It certainly has it's moments. The final boss fight is absolutely insane.
@Godsire- I'm still a stranger to the GoW series myself, never got past the first Chapter/Level/Mission in GoW 1.
I do however own the GoW HD Saga (1-3 & two PSP games).
