While the PlayStation 4 continues to dominate in virtually every European territory apart from the UK, Sony suddenly finds itself in a precarious position in the United States. Following ten straight NPD victories, the Japanese giant lost to the Xbox One in November, after a “temporary” price cut put Microsoft’s machine back on top.
And speaking with Reuters, SCE chief Andrew House admitted that the climate has been “tougher” in the all-important nation of late. While the publication hasn’t provided a direct quote, the executive purportedly admitted that sales of its system are back in-line with expectations in December, but it’s clearly keeping a close eye on its Redmond competitor.
We’re already starting to see some stronger PS4 bundles trickle into US retail, with Amazon currently offering a console, two games, and a PlayStation Camera for less than $450. With the Xbox One selling for $100 less, though, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the PlayStation maker may need to do something if it wants to stay in front.

thing is worldwide the PS4 is out selling the xb1 month on month and at the end of the day it's total sales that are important and worldwide even the PS3 beat the 360 in total sales
MS only ever look at the US sale figures it's all they care about
Still don't understand why Sony isn't pushing a 1st party mega bundle
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi I will never understand why they don't just drop a couple of download codes in the box.
Doesn't the reduced price offer for the Xbox One end in January? No need for Sony to worry when the competitors price will be increasing soon.
You know, Patcher just spoke 1 week ago...
@MadchesterManc I was just going to say the same thing. Price cut expires in January.
@ztpayne7 @MadchesterManc That's if it really is temporary. I'm not sure how Microsoft can put the price back up now - they've undermined the value of the product, and no one will be buying it at $399.99.
@Savino
The Wii U stands no chance because Nintendo is a stubborn, arrogant company that has lost touch with what gamers/consumers want.
@get2sammyb
Exactly. I highly doubt this price cut is temporary. That would be a stupid move on their part.
Sony will never be able to compete with Microsoft's unlimited funds. So they MUST get some big name, exclusive games out as soon as possible, & they better be good. That is their upper hand over Microsoft. If they don't, they will be in trouble in 2015.
The Order needs to be great. That's an extremely important game as it comes out early '15 & is a much hyped exclusive. Sony's lack of AAA exclusive dominance & them touting all these damn indie games & PS3 remasters instead of getting their big franchises out there has caught up to them.
If Sony isn't going to play to their strengths, then Microsoft will. And their strength is $. They can afford a price drop this early without batting an eye. Sony would be wise to keep bundles coming & maybe even slap a bigger hard drive inside the PS4.
However, most gamers (especially here in the US) are idiots. They used to have an Xbox 360. Then Microsoft made fools of themselves leading up to Xbox One. Then a lot of people jumped to Sony's camp. But no Uncharted type games & Sony botching almost every big name PS4 exclusive, so far, & a nice shiny price drop for the Xbox One is a tough thing for the casual, idiotic US gamer to ignore.
@Savino
And trust me, it hurts to type that because I used to LOVE Nintendo. I have owned all their systems & they, single-handedly, brought console gaming back to the US after the Atari debacle in the 80's.
I have been loyal to them a long time, but their arrogance & stubborness has cost them on so many occasions, it's ridiculous.
The Wii U may be a great console, but it's what we should've had LAST generation instead of the Wii. That would have been amazing. Instead the Wii U will probably go down like the Dreamcast. A great niche console that just got lost behind the two bigger "brothers", so to speak.
@get2sammyb
I have thought on that too. If this holiday was profitable for them, then it would be wise to keep it down. It is not like they have a huge exclusive lineup next year either.
Playstation 10 months Xbox 1 month in the U.S. LOL Playstation 11 for 11 worldwide. This is like saying Xbox won the first quarter of the first quarter, but Playstation won the game! Tell me again why this should worry Playstation? Total Installed userbase, Total sales. Playstation has great titles coming in 2015 Xbox has ???
I understand that strong sales in the US are critical in helping the PS4's continued success, but with MS practically giving the X1 away, I really don't see what everyone is worried about. PS4 is no Dreamcast, and has established itself this generation all over the world. What a great first year for PS4, and I see another equally successful year coming. I think they are accutly aware of MS momentum and will respond properly.
In the end, your never gonna convince a penny pinching mom to buy something with a bigger price and less options; whether that be 2 games and ($50) pricecut or whatever, so unless Sony can compete with that kind of loss on every machine sold, I say keep it profitable. Microsoft could literally give the X1 away for this entire generation and never bat an eye, Sony doesn't have that luxury.
@JohnKarnes - Couple all of that w/ the unknown of what MS will do about the X1 price in Jan and I think sitting and waiting is the best thing Sony can do right now. Let The Order come out in Feb and see if that helps sales.
It is possible that all the people who wanted a PS4 by this holiday simply have 1 already, 15m in 1 year is a lot of people. Let U4, FFXV get dated and see if that helps sales. Holiday 2015 could be the time to buy.
And if Sony really wanted to push PS4 stop w/ all the PS3 bundles. Some come w/ the same games - Last of Us, GTAV - for $150 less.

Somebody must be buying them still. (I'm sure you all know by now I bought mine yesterday)
@Godsire-
But if you happen to own one, it's still the best bang for your buck atm. And I honestly don't see myself playing the order or uncharted in 5 years, whereas I'm sure I'll be playing Mario kart and SSB. Sure, Nintendo effed up royally marketing- and even branding wise, but take one look at the quality of their games and all of the "on paper comparison" between Wii U and PS4 don't matter anymore.
I've been a Playstation man from day one, but grew up on the NES and SNES. But where Nintendo is giving me the same quality as they did in the SNES era in HD, I think Sony has drifted too far from what made them big in the first place.
@Godsire- I don't think PS4 needs a killer app really, it's managed to sell fine on just solid exclusives so far with loads more on the way. Microsoft haven't got any exclusives worth of mention for the next 6 months now while Sony will probably have about 5 in that time and they don't all need to be great to sell well, people bought Assassin's Creed Unity didn't they?
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi @get2sammyb Exactly. Throw in Killzone, throw in Second Son, on TOP of the preexisting bundles. Heck, throw in a couple of indie games and a six month Plus voucher. People would go nuts.
@Boerewors
Nintendo is not giving the same quality as they did in the SNES era....not even close. Their first party games, maybe (and even that's extremely debateable), but the SNES had third party developers making excellent games for the SNES too. The Wii U doesn't have that.
Ever since the N64 days, Nintendo has made stubborn & awful decisions & design choices that have pushed them away from third party developers. And a console needs those developers to fill in the gaps between the Mario and Zelda games that Nintendo puts out. Until they get those developers back, Nintendo will always be a distant 3rd place and even if the Wii U is a great console, it will be a niche console.
Nintendo survives by dominating the handheld market, producing it's first party games, & by loyal Nintendo apologists, like yourself. If you want to be playing Mario Kart Wii U in 5 yrs.....more power to ya. But I like more variety to choose from when I own a console.
And comparing the Wii U to the PS4 is completely ridiculous. The Wii U has caused Nintendo to lose over 500 million dollars & may cost the CEO his job. They got lucky the Wii caught on as a fad with mothers & grandmothers who loved Wii Sports. In reality, the Wii was a little white box of massive amounts of shovelware, aging technology, & a ridiculously ancient online structure. And to brand their new console, the "Wii U", based off of that fad was a huge mistake.
If Nintendo would've released the Wii U last-gen, Nintendo would be on top right now. But, as usual, Nintendo has to be different for the sake of being different & at the expense of third party developers. No publisher wants to always have a full seperate team making games solely for Nintendo's behind-the-times (technology wise) consoles. It just doesn't make financial sense.
And until Nintendo realizes this, you always have Wii U apologists saying, "Well, at least we have Bayonetta." Lol.
@adf86
I was just talking about the US. Sony, as a whole, will be just fine with the PS4. But the Xbox has a very strong fan base here in the states. And Microsoft's coffers are endless. So, in my opinion, Sony needs to start hitting on these exclusives they are putting out. Games like DriveClub are completely unacceptable when Forza is over on the Xbox.
@Godsire- they may have a lot of money but at some point it won't be worth it to them to lower the cost because at the end of the day they are in it to make a profit and it's already a small part of MS's profit portfolio, when (if) it ceases to be realistically profitable, they will cut it lose, like the Zune. They are not about to just keep cutting costs, they have reached about the lowest they can go without hardware prices (for them) decreasing drastically.
@Godsire- If Nintendo released the Wii U last gen, they would probably be in debt much like Sony is now.
Holding back on specs with the Wii was one of the smartest decisions the company made. People like to blab about console 'power' without actually thinking about WHY Nintendo did what it did in the first place.
The obsession with power has led to insane development budgets, and hundreds of developers and publishers have gone bust in the last decade because of it. Nintendo took a gamble with the Wii and DS by subverting the stale console market; a gamble that was simply needed. That's how they've survived for 125 years - by ignoring what everyone else is doing, in favour of upending the market with new ideas.
3rd parties don't like Nintendo's methods, because Nintendo is refusing to bow down to them. Sony and Microsoft are bending over backwards by allowing DRM, disc-locked content, unfinished games and absurd paywalls to form the basis of the 3rd parties' profit. Nintendo knows that the 'Triple A' gaming business is slowly imploding, which is why they've turned to the indies for future support.
Would I like more 3rd party games on Wii U? Sure. But to say Nintendo is arrogant and stubborn is refusing to see the wider picture. Nintendo is trying to consider its own long-term health - which is done by sticking to its guns, and not catering to the whims of short-sighted publishers that are desperately trying to avoid bankruptcy.
@get2sammyb I agree with that, the desperate move mat have cost them sales numbers. But I think Sony being in the red as someone mentions in another article, they can't afford to lose any sales.
Also, Microsoft has some extra funds so they may be able to last the price cut storm a lot longer than Sony can deal with losing ground.
@get2sammyb
I'd say I can't believe MS would do something so idiotic as go back to $400 after the holidays but after what that company tried to pull prior to the start of this gen and the stuff I've seen all 3 console makers try to pull at different points in time, I wouldn't be surprised if MS actually is that stupid. Somebody there has to know that not only does this undermine the value of the console, it undoes all the work Phil Spencer and his team have done to get some respectability back to the brand.
@Kage_88
Obviously, you are entitled to your opinion & I respect your view on this, but I just have a question for ya......are you full from eating everything Nintendo shovels ya? Lol.
Are you going to try to me Virtual Boy wasn't a complete disaster next?
Or how Nintendo, basically, created the PlayStation when it screwed over Sony, creating another challenger in the market? Was that part of their genius plan?
Or when they stubbornly stuck with cartridges instead of moving onto CD-ROM, like the rest of the industry, & pissed off every third party developer in the business costing them countless millions when all of those developers moved on to Sony? Including one major trump card that Nintendo had & just pissed away.....Final Fantasy VII. Was that about not bowing down to third parties? Because I am pretty sure the Wii U has games on DISC, right?
Oh and I am sure it was fun for you to type in ridiculous friend's codes while trying meet up with friends in Mario Kart instead of just clicking on soneones profi......oh wait......Nintendo doesn't even have online player profiles?!! What year is it?!!
In fact, according to Nintendo, gamers really don't care about online gaming anyways......yea. They actually said that. Lol.
I guess I must have been wrong about all these examples and Nintendo is just completely ahead of everyone else in the industry with their forward thinking and non-arrogance.
@thedevilsjester
I hope you are right, because I would hate to see the industry turn into a joke because of Microsoft.
@Godsire- other than the Wii, Nintendo consoles have consistently sold significantly less than the previous generation (from NES to the WiiU it's a downward slide, when the number of gamers has grown by leaps and bounds), which tells you that no matter what you may think of their games or ideals, gamers do not want what they are selling.
@thedevilsjester
Exactly. Gamers are speaking with their wallets when it comes to Nintendo.
Now if we could just get them to do it when it comes to Destiny......lol.
I love these posts! Brings out the fanboy in folks.. a lot of Wii U talk, I can't wait for Zelda! That's when I will own all three consoles
@Madd_Hatter401 while I am definitely a Sony fanboy, that does not change the facts, which are Nintendo sells less and less consoles each generation as the number of gamers grows. Spin it however you wish, but it boils down to Nintendo is not offering a product that the vast majority of console gamers want. Why this is the case is down to opinion, and there are no end of those, but that does not change the numbers.
My personal opinion on the fact is that its the damned controller. I would buy a WiiU in a heart beat if the standard controller was more like the classic controller, but that's just my own take on it.
Wtf are people talking about Nintendo for lol. They're fine and they'll continue to be fine. Especially with the releases they were pumping out this year and the boatloads of cash the amiibo line has been making them. Bringing them up at this point is like the whino at the bar who just wont let something go.
Sony sold millions of PS4s and they're already showing concern despite the console being on top right now. That isnt good. Selling that many consoles should set them up as king of the roost, one or two good sales months for XBO shouldnt be shaking them up this much. Then again, their smartphones are still tanking the company and keeping them in the red, so maybe there are fears that it'll translate to their other tech.
Sony has to show off muscle in 2015, PS4 gamers wont be happy with another subpar round of exclusives, remastered re-releases, or cash-grab "pre-order before even seeing gameplay!" 3rd party games that are ultimately empty. Bloodborne, Uncharted, and The Order have to shake up the PS4, I know two of them look amazing so far.
