When you're chowing down on your turkey sandwiches and complaining about the quality of the PlayStation Network this Christmas, spare a thought for the unfortunate engineers tasked with keeping everything online over the next few days. At the time of typing, Sony's service is unsurprisingly facing some severe issues, as an influx of users attempt to connect.
The company's said on Twitter that it's aware of the latest outage, and that its team is working hard to fix things. From what we can tell, this isn't your typical downtime, as parts of the PSN are functioning fine in our neck of the woods (UK) – but our friends list is prompting a scheduled maintenance error. It seems to us that it's just getting bombarded with traffic at the moment.
To be honest, with plenty of people expecting PS4s for presents, we suspect that things will be a teensy bit shaky for the next few days. Is that good enough? Probably not – but as long as the platform holder's response is swift, then there shouldn't be too much to complain about. And failing that, there's always Monopoly, right?

If I can't get online tomorrow morning, I'll be playing Smash Bros. 3DS until my fingers bleed instead.
Couldnt play destiny
It's working for me now, how about everyone else?
I was able to sign on tonight. I also intend to leave it on overnight since Destiny Destiny is the gift I'm forward to the most. I'm gonna be so mad if it's completely down tomorrow.
I had problems earlier where it said PSN was undergoing maintenance, but it all seems fine now.
I love it when this happens because Sony can say, "Yeah, people bought so many PS4s that they broke our servers." : P I remember this happening with the Wii U last year. But I do hope PSN comes back soon for all of the new users!
I can't believe they couldn't have anticipated this.
Sony is getting cocky again like in the PS3 early days.
I'm down as well
Couldn't play destiny so started the last of us... A blessing in disguise
Bah. I wonder if the Lizard Queens have something to do with this.
Either way, I can't play Garden Warfare and I am PISSED.
(United States by the way, still can't sign in @ 6:30pm Pacific)
@glassmusic - Or the GOP and that whole The Interview mess. I decided a week ago I wouldnt even bother tryi g to log in tomorrow. Of course it helps that I wo t be home most of the day, but when I am I'll just play on offline on Wii U.
@rjejr That's a very smart plan.
Actually, there's not always Monopoly. PSN being down I tried playing Monopoly twice today and got rejected both times :/
I had a little trouble getting online with my PS3 but my PS4, PS Vita and PSP all connect just fine
Good job sony you manage to ruin xmas for thousands of people great job hope your happy taking money from people and not even setting up a decent server. Merry xmas
@get2sammyb it not working for me
Still not working
We spent a small fortune on PS4 , games and accessories; for our teenager and he still can't get online here in North Carolina. He has been trying ALL DAY. BUMMER...
Meanwhile, he is playing ALONE or XBOX and we are wondering why we even bothered with Sony PS4. MERRY CHRISTMAS SONY.....you should make it up somehow to all of these customers who purchased your product and got nothing in return for it on Christmas Day. This is just wrong....and totally unprofessional on your end.
The PSN issues are starting to annoy me now, mainly because I know the infrastructure they run. It's openstack private cloud. JUST SPIN UP MORE SERVERS SONY!!! No, even more. More.....yeah, bit more....keep going. Argh, move out the way and let me do this for you!
@glassmusic -Yeah, seems to have worked out fine for me. DL'd Skylanders Trap Team on Wii U this morning and went out for the day. Going out again for the day tomorrow. And on Saturday. Then I'll hook up my PS3 on Sunday. Sometimes it's nice to have life outside of videogames.
I do feel bad for everybody else though. No excuse on Sony's part when they should expect this.
I've been trying to get on to PSN store all day because i have a 50 $ code to enter but for the past few days PSN hasn't been working because of maintenance, this sucks and why now ON Christmas whats up with that and if your doing it because of all the new players well then maybe you should of done it earlier.
OK, it seems that both PSN and XBL are actually under DDoS again by the lovely (and very badly named) LizardSquad.
@RobynDBC
You realize a "hacker group" has been toying with Sony and Microsoft for quite some time, right? Do you realize they made threats to bring their servers down this christmas? Put two and two together (or don't and just look at how they are openly taking credit for the simultaneous sony & Microsoft network outages) and quit acting like a company that's been the target of a crime owes you and your family anything simply because your son misses a few precious days of online gaming.
@theatrain: I see the news posts but it doesn't mean I BELIEVE IT. I do not believe everything I see on the internet or what anyone says they are responsible for either. I DO BLAME SONY; they have the ethical responsibility to give anyone who purchases their product what they pay for and this year they have not done it. When XBOX came out they didn't crash and this group claims to have taken down XBOX too. If this is true; how do you explain the fact that my son stayed up playing XBOX online with his friends instead of enjoying his new SONY ONLINE PS4? YOU should stop attacking people for posting their opinions. I am very close to returning all of the SONY products I purchased for a Christmas gift because I just don't believe the HACKER theory. I believe they were not prepared for the overwhelming response to PS4 as Christmas gifts and just couldn't handle the traffic. If they want to allow the public to believe they were hacked to take the pressure off of them and show their inexperience with online gaming, that is their business but it makes them look inexperienced to me. I have my opinion and I am sticking to it no matter what you say.
