We don’t know about you, but we still think of the Super Nintendo when talking about Street Fighter. This editor’s brother got Street Fighter II Turbo’s special edition one Christmas, which was a source of fascination for the entire family, seeing as it came packaged in a steel tin. Many good times were had with that cartridge – even if we all struggled against M. Bison.
That’s a long winded way of saying: we think that the franchise’s natural home is on Nintendo systems – but Sony, understandably, begs to differ. Speaking with IGN regarding Street Fighter V’s recently announced exclusivity, SCEUK boss Fergal Gara declared that the deal offers another example of how “PlayStation’s heritage provides some fantastic opportunities to both reminisce and look forward”.
He explained: “Obviously, it's a classic from earlier PlayStation days, but now it’s being reintroduced for the PlayStation 4 era. It was a huge hit on PlayStation, so I guess that you could say that Street Fighter’s natural home is on PlayStation. Now, I’m delighted that that’s going to happen again in this cycle." We’re not sure that we agree with the first bit, but, yeah – we’re also hyped to see the series return.

It's not. Street Fighter existed before PlayStation, and new games in the series would still be made even if PS4 were to be Sony's last console (I'm using that as a hypothetical example, not actually saying I think that will happen).
No, Street Fighter is home on 3DS
When I think Street Fighter, I think of my Saturn first and foremost with Street Fighter Alpha 2 especially, as well as Street Fighter VS X-Men.
Then my Dreamcast for the 3 Street Fighter 3 games that were releases on it as well as the Capcom VS SNK games.
But for the systems that are out today, I'm actually glad it's a PS4 exclusive and not an exclusive one some other system, even though I own all of them except for just one.
Yeah, I'm with you @Storytime7. I'd say Tekken is more at home on PlayStation.
@get2sammyb Yup true, Tekken and Mortal Kombat feels home on Playstation but when I think of Street Fighter I think of the Arcades
@get2sammyb Agreed. If any fighter feels at home on PlayStation, it's definitely Tekken.
@get2sammyb Pretty much. Tekken was kinda like PS's own baby in some respects. I was bewildered when I heard Tekken 6 was going multiplatform back around 08-09. It just seemed odd.
As for Street Fighter, yeah I do associate it with the SNES, and it probably always will given how highly regarded Street Fighter II is. But hey, the new games need a home, right? If Ryu and his crew wanna crash on PlayStation, I say welcome.
@XFsWorld Strangely, I find a lot of games feel at home on the 3DS. Certainly RE Revelations, Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, and I agree, Street Fighter 4 as well. Idk what it is about that handheld- games just feel right as rain on it...
I'll always think of the SNES when I hear Street Fighter. But, for current games I say PS is as good a place as any. Though I still play SFII Turbo and Alpha and New Challengers on Wii U Virtual Console.
And, I had my fill of Street Fighter 4 on 3DS. I liked the new optional 3D "over the shoulder" view. Made the characters pop right out at you.
But it's time for a new one. I'm gonna play the heck out of this game when it releases.
most street fighter games have been on and had exclusive content for playstation including main games and spin-offs so i agree with him.
@JaxonH Steet Fighter 4 on 3DS was the definitive version in my opinion.
Not always, but I'd agree it's home now. It's not Xbox, and the Wii U's gamepad is hardly ideal for this game.
When I think about the natural home of street fighter I think of arcades and then the snes, PlayStation was the first time I played tekken so playstation to me is the natural home for tekken.
In fact at the time the ps1 was getting inferior ports of street fighter while the saturn had almost arcade perfect ports of alpha 1, 2, 3 vs xmen ect
I'm old and remember the impact SF II had on the 16-bit console war so to me Street Fighter's 'natural home,' at least on consoles, would be Nintendo. Hell I'd still associate it more with Genesis than PS or Xbox. Kind of like how PS will always be the home to Resident Evil and Xbox Splinter Cell.
I have to agree with you @get2sammyb: Street Fighter natural home is a Nintendo System but honestly what do you expect a Sony employee to say? I think Tekken is more of a natural home for the PS then Street Fighter.
And yes @get2sammyb: I do remember Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha.
Lol "Shoryuken believe it"
Don't y'all ever stop .
Tekken will always be Sony's signature 3rd-party fighting series.
And PS Vita.
Obviously its natural home is in the arcade, but yeah I'd definitely agree on console most would think SNES.
I remember getting the SNES Streetfighter pack (actually didn't Nintendo call them paks?) for Christmas and I was blown away that you could have arcade quality graphics at home.
Good times
@get2sammyb Yeah I agree when I think about SF series it's normally SF2 on Snes strongest and for Tekken it's the first three on PS1.
here is my list ;
street fighter = SNES
fatal fury = mega drive
samurai shodown = 3DO
killer instinct = n64
virtua fighter = saturn
soul caliber = dreamcast
tekken = playstation
played all of these back in the day on their respective consoles - and was rubbish at all of them , but my most humiliating moment was when playing a two player battle on power stone (dreamcast) "player two" (he shall remain nameless) beat me while reading a book at the same time ! (true story)
"Natural home is PlayStation." I think of Tomb Raider and Metal Gear Solid.
How's that working out these days? Damn I miss my childhood...
Funny to hear that since PS1 struggled with 2D fighters and got downgraded versions of a lot of them.
IMO SF should be one of those games available on all consoles. I keep thinking at least one of the inevitable iterations of V will end up being multiplatform.
@Storytime7 this makes me sad because Tekken is the one fighter that I think is complete garbage. Give me Street Fighter, DoA, Soul Calibur, MvC, or really anything before Tekken. I could never understand people who like Tekken, when I played the game it feels like I am fighting in molasses. Granted I haven't played it since PS1 era, but fans of the series have told me it has not changed in that area.
@meppi i agree with you whole heartedly, im still waiting to see a dreamcast 2 but i know that is a dream sadly!
Eh I always saw it at a Nintendo thing first and Sony second, so they're not too far off the mark. I'm not going to disagree, but I can't entirely agree either. I do believe it's not really at home on a MS box though, they're more of the FPS, WRPG, Sports and Racing box home to Halo, Gears of War, Forza and not much uniquely else.
Once the Dreamcast came out there was really no reason to play Street Fighter on Playstaion.
lol no. Natural home is on an arcade cabinet or a Nintendo console.
@thedevilsjester I remember liking Tekken 3 back in the day, but I haven't really kept up with the franchise since. I just view it as something that is at home on PlayStation because the games have always been ported to PS consoles.
I need to get back in the fighting ring, never played Streetie since last yr cause my online was off keen to get back in it an really can't wait for MKX now that's a true fighting game MK4life
About the picture, yeah I remember that game and I actually liked it pretty much!
Would be cool to see: Garuda, D.Dark & C. Jack again in a Street Fighter game, but since they are AKIRA's characters, it may never happen
@NAZA-187 - MK9 was awesome and I can't wait for MKX either
