If you were one of the millions of people impacted by the PlayStation Network outage over Christmas, then you'll no doubt be wondering where your compensation has got to. Fortunately, platform holder Sony has announced that it's started rolling out five day PlayStation Plus extensions to all members now. You'll only be eligible if your account was active on 25th December, but you'll get an email shortly to confirm that everything's gone through.
"For those PlayStation Plus members impacted by the PSN service interruption over the holidays, we have started to roll out the five day PlayStation Plus membership extension; no action is required on your part," executive Eric Lempel explained on the PlayStation Blog. "Thanks again for your loyalty." The manufacturer's also giving away a 10 per cent discount on the PlayStation Store this weekend, which you can learn more about through here.
Don't worry if your subscription has lapsed since 25th December, as you'll still be eligible for five free days of service. While this is clearly a fair deal considering the scale of the outage, though, we can't help but feel for those people who got a brand new PS4 on Christmas Day and ended up with an overpriced paper weight, as there's no way for them to claim compensation as well. Let's just hope that this is the last outage of its kind, huh?

Just checked and my subscription has been extended. Thanks Sony but let's not have it happen again eh!?
That's good. And speaking this stopping, did you hear they finally caught they guy. He's being charged with more than DDOS attacks too. He's also been charged with "swatting" I believe. It's giving the police false information that caues them to have an armed response. He's 18 too. Just in time to charged as an adult.
@Jaz007 Lives ten minutes from me too.
Nice to see this come thru. My PS+ sub expired BF after the 2013 BF deal but I'm happy Sony came thru for the others.
Bought a new PS3 for Christmas which I thought would come with a PS+ trial but I have no idea why I thought that, just wishful thinking I guess.
OK, time to go read about the 10%.
@Dodoo
Why would you "thank" Sony for doing something they should do & just giving you something back, that you already paid for?
If Sony actually wanted to do the right thing here, it would give every PSN user a free month of PS+ . Thay way they make sure to include any & all customers who got screwed over on X-mas day after they opened up their new PlayStation console & found that it won't work online.
But praising them for giving out a paltry 5 days of PS+ to people who were already signed up & should rightfully get those days back anyways is ridiculous.
@Godsire- I said this when they first announced it and got a load of grief. Sony are just fulfilling their contractual obligations which if they didn't people can actually sue them for because of a by-law. Yet they're being made out to be doing us a massive favour. Same with this 10% discount nonsense (now even worse as it's one weekend only not whenever we wanted like they first said). A 10% discount makes nearly everything in the PS Store still more expensive than disc. Wow, what a treat.
@Godsire- I thank them for being courteous in giving us our missed days back and because I have good manners. I mean what have you really lost? A few days playing online over Xmas, whoopie-doo! There are far more worse things going on in the world to get your knickers in a twist over such trivial things.
I've not read them but no doubt in the PS+ subscription small print it likely states that any outages caused by factors out of their control are subject to lack of reimbursement.
@Dodoo
First off.....Sony having PSN down over X-mas is not "out of their control". They got hit with an attack, but does that give them an excuse for how they handled the communication to it's customers during that attack? Or the fact that they don't have their security measures up to snuff to prevent an attack even though they take your money? And it's not just this isolated incident with Sony. That would be different. But Sony has shown a pattern of imcompetence when it comes to it's PSN going down over the years.
Secondly......trivial things? So if I went to the gas station, paid for my gas, then went to the pump to find that I couldn't pump my gas because somebody ruined all the pumps making them not work, would that gas station owe me my money back. Absolutely. They don't deserve a medal or a bunch of praise for returning my money, however. They would just be doing something they should do so I would get the product (or value of that product) that I originally paid for.
Third.....if everyone had this laid back, "who cares?there are bigger world problems than this, blah, blah....." attitude, these companies would take advantage of that & stuff like this would happen even more than it does. Obviously there are "far more worse things going on in the world", but that's not the point.
@rastamadeus
Yea this website is filled with a ridiculous amount of Sony fanboys who constantly make excuses for unacceptable incompetence. I love all my PlayStation products, but I am also not blind to the fact that Sony is an irritating company to support sometimes.
And I agree with you on the fact that the "10% off" discount is a joke. It's actually more insulting to me than if they would've just done nothing. This is just some sham to get people onto the overpriced PSN store.
