Storage management has become a key consideration for console owners of late, with massive installs and digital downloads meaning that it can be challenging to keep all of your content in one place. Much like the PlayStation 3, Sony's made it so that you can upgrade the PlayStation 4's hard drive as you see fit, but you're limited to smaller capacity 2.5" drives. Fortunately, the folks over at Nyko have a nifty solution.
The deviously named Data Bank – as pictured above – replaces the top of the PS4 as well as its original hard drive, and allows you to insert 3.5" drives instead. This essentially means that you'll be able to significantly up the capacity of your console, with the most subtle of aesthetic tweaks. Alright, it looks like there's a great big eraser protruding out of the platform, but if you want the extra space, it's a solid option.
There's no word on a price for the accessory just yet, but it is due out in early 2015. Is this something that you'd consider, or are you not willing to sacrifice the slick good looks of your system for the added space? Plug in your opinion in the comments section below.

I've already reached the point where I have to delete games off my hard drive or buy a new one, and seeing the prices of 2.5 inch 2 TB just make me think "Maybe I'd be better off buying a PC instead"
To be honest I can't imagine this being a more financially friendly option either, considering I need to buy an add-on then a hard drive on top of it.
@Jonny £80(ish)? Not too bad and nowhere near as much as a decent PC.
Have just had a quick scan through ebuyer and there's not a huge price difference between 2.5" and 3.5" 2TB drives - maybe the 3.5"s can be had for £10-20 cheaper. I doubt the price of this add on will be able to justify itself unless one feels the need for even more capacity now that 3.5" drives up to 6TB are available.
I won't need any extra space for a while, hopefully at some point they'll release a 2TB or 3/5TB console in the next few years and I'll just replace my old PS4 instead.
@Licenced True but rather than spend 80+ quid in a new hard drive I can put in a months savings towards a new PC and 5 months down the line have a PC more powerful than my PS4 to enjoy/finally play my steam library on (I'm a Mac user so get an inferior experience from it)
sony should just let us use external HDDs to install games too, with a usb hub you could have as many as you like hooked up at once
Nintendo already do and MS are adding it to the XB1 (or may have already done so I'm not sure), it's simple easy and means they could even sell their own custom made ones, like memory cards on PS1 & 2 you could also take downloaded games and saves to a friends house to play on their PS4
As I still mostly buy retail AAA games my 1TB SSHD still has load of room left on it and I can't see I'll ever need to upgrade it again, or at least not for a long time...
This is no doubt a godsend though for people that are digital only...
I mostly buy physical copies of games so I didn't think space would be an issue on my PS4 until I found I didn't have any space left on my PS4s hard drive when I tried to play Dragon age: Inquisition.....I hadn't realised that if I buy games on disc it still installs the data on the Hard Drive....so I had games like Destiny and Infamous: 2nd son that I've not played in ages taking up 10s of GB each....that might be obvious and common knowledge to most but I hadn't realised. I really didn't think having to install a new hard drive would be an issue for me just over a year into owning my PS4.
You could always run a 3.5" drive right without this if you have a 3.5 powered enclosure ($10-20) and sata cable. Finding the right cable to fit is a tad tricky, and standby mode won't work.. but I'm wondering if this add on will share similar issues.
All that said....I don't know, I have just about all the major releases and my 1tb 2.5" still has plenty of space.
I also had this idea and posted it Dose it include extra cooling fans and power?
has the standby mode issue been worked out? If so YES I will be picking one up.If not I wouldn't want to cause issues with my PS4 with heat and power needed unless it was Sony approved. Current 2Tb drive but a 6Tb may store everything for the next 7 years without the need to uninstall anything.
Seems like a really weird device for Nyko to manufacture, but then again I just purchased a boxed retail bracket which seems to exist only to install a HDD into the 12GB PS3s, and there were several to choose from. I was just expecting a metal bracket in a ziplock bag, not an entire bracket, screws and instructions in a really nice box. And all for $5.
As others have said though, cost of this would probably mean just get as big of a 2.5 drive as possible and suck it up. They should probably team up w/ a HDD manufacturer and only sell this w/ a huge HDD inside.
Where else is it possible to buy storage for PS4? 1TB storage?
And this is one of the reasons why I am waiting for the next model of PS4......a bigger hard drive. The PS4 shipping with that small of a stock hard drive was ridiculous.
Ha, I LOL'd at the "great big eraser...." . I'm ok on space so far but hopefully more options become available soon enough . My old "fatty" PS3 however is hurting.....
I upgraded my ps4 to a 2tb 2.5" sata hard drive a while ago, I purchased off of eBay (I'm in UK and seller was in USA) it works a treat and still have quite a bit of space, and I've a fair few games in my digital and hard copy collection installed 😄
@Munkyknuts Yup even retail/physical game discs still require you to install "game data" unfortunately.
It's the same case with most of the PS3 games I own, though they don't take up nearly as much space as PS4 games do, from what I've heard anyways.
Can u use portable hard drives?
Like the sea gate n WD ones in Argos n pc world? I heard someone on about getting one for Xb1....... Bug had to be 3.0 USB.??
What would YA need for PS4? 2tb n above
@SUDS_96_YNWA Right now, you can only spawn a PS4 hard drive with a 2.5" drive. Most portable hard drives are 2.5" so in theory you could open up the enclosure and use the drive as a replacement, but you couldn't use a portable hard drive via USB like you can other systems.
Personally, I recommend 1tb 7,200 RPM drives for the swap.
I upgraded to a 2tb internal drive months ago. Had a 2.5" 11mm external for just $90. Took it out the case, upgraded, then put the 500gb from the PS4 back in the case and use it for my Xbox One. Killed two birds with one stone, and for just $45 per console.
I mostly buy retail too. Have 180GB left. An extra 70GB worth of game data that I can delete once I'm done with Black Flag, Warframe, Diablo and a couple of others that I very rarely play.
Turns out my ps4 originally wasn't showing my used space accurately, but I upgraded to 1T (and put the 500gb in my ps3), and it's less than half full with all my content downloaded. I predict needing this after fallout and TES come to ps4😁
@KALofKRYPTON buying discs and digital installs are exactly the same size btw. Just happened to notice that myself and decided to not have to change discs all day😄
I'll buy this, just so I can use a 3.5 HDD of course.
Paid $100 for a 2TB HD yesterday, hope that'll do the job.
@crazykcarter I know how and why game data is required...I just dislike that newer games take up so much HDD space, regardless of being disc or digital.
I have already upgraded to a 2TB Seagate Expansion 9mm 2.5". It is the Samsung Spinpoint and has a very very slight performance advantage over the standard drive. Easy to do with the back up on PS4, lots of work instructions online and a good upgrade!!
Toshiba just above a 3TB 2.5 HDD. .. so I might wait for that and deal with uninstalling games when the time comes till then!
I will buy this, I did not want to have take my orginal hard drive out. I love this ideal and it does not look that bad.
@crazykcarter At least you own a PS4 though jealous lol =).
