We've milked our Game of the Year coverage harder than a Cravendale cow, but the sugary sweet conclusion is now in sight. With our PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Vita favourites wrapped up in text and video form, we're now pointing a figurative finger in your direction in order to ascertain your 2014 picks.
Game of the Year is always an enormous undertaking here at Push Square Towers. We started planning this year's coverage at the end of November, and produced several shortlists which were then voted on by 20 team members from around the globe. With the results tallied up, we subsequently turned our attention to the gruelling task of creating eleven text and video features.
We'll be recapping all of our content soon, but before we do that, we want you to tell us about your favourites. The community aspect is what makes this site special, and we'd be doing you a disservice if we didn't give you a platform with which to share your favourites. Do you agree with our selections, or do you reckon that they're way off base?
Directly beneath this obligatory filler text, you'll find a poll with all of the titles that made our various shortlists in 2014. All you need to do is look through it, and vote for your favourite. At 14:00PM GMT on Saturday, 3rd January, we'll freeze the poll and use your four favourites as the picks in our reader vote. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
The big question is: what will you select? Did you relish rendering your orcish rivals to rubble in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, or was Sucker Punch's supercharged sequel inFAMOUS: Second Son more up your street? Perhaps you agree that P.T. outdid most retail releases in 2014, or maybe you liked intergalactic indie Velocity 2X the most? Cast your vote, and then tell us what you chose in the comments section below.
The poll is now closed. Thank you everyone for voting.

Mine wasn't there, I actually enjoyed unity the most
Tnx for the topic,I voted for Samurai Warriors 4 (on Vita)
Btw why P.T. is on the list?!? Is it out?
I voted for PT lol. Infamous Second Son and Watch Dogs were huge disappointments but have potential with a sequel in my opinion. Second Son was a disappointment because I played Infamous before and it was over hyped like Watch Dogs.
i loved second son...but i did love all the infamous games and the short dlc's like the vampire one and first light..
i must admit to really liking the new c.o.d advanced warfare multiplayer though
Can I say the last of us remastered, never had a ps3 so it was new for me. If not farcry. Gonna start shadow of mordor soon
I personally went with Ninja Storm Revolution, being a fan of the Naruto games and manga/anime series. Rogue Legacy would have possibly taken the vote instead, but I played it on PC, not on a PS system. To be fair, the only PS games I've played on this list are Revolution and Destiny, so I don't know how much my vote really counts for.
I have faith in humanity again, no1 voted for lighting returns
Other:- GTAV by a mile !
P.T all the way... Enjoyed it soooooo much with friends, best thing i ever played. Also, the last of us remastered was soooo freakin good.
Genuinely quite surprised to see Destiny currently leading by quite a stretch!
Voted for Dragon Age Inquisition. My real goty is still TES5: Skyrim for 4 years running now. I'll change that when I play a better game.😀
DA:I and SoM take it for me. Solid games that really ended the year on a high.
Wanted to vote for Samurai Warriors 4, but I've got to tip my hat to Earth Defense Force 2025.
Driveclub certainly is way up there as well.
Second Son all the way for me. Fantastic game.
I'm also gonna give out a few trophies.
Platinum: inFamous: Second Son - A great open-wolrd game that did not is dissapoint. Almost everything about it was great.
Gold: Destiny -I got this at Christmas and I've been addicted ever since. The gunplay is extremely satisfying and the multiplayer is great. Has a few problems, but the good definitally outshines the bad.
Silver: Samurai Warriors 4 -A great warriors game. I've played this one a lot. It really benefits from the PS4's power. Very little pop-in, and very polished mechanics and gameplay. The conversations in Chronilces mode are also great.
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair.
I'm just a big teddy bear at heart....one packed with more explosives than most small countries, and sharp bear claws.
I voted for, "Other".......
A.k.a. my PS3 backlog.
I've only played 10 of these games, and of those, I've only finished 3 of them! This generation is only a year old and I'm already behind. Since I'm short on time, the dilemma is...do I blow through all of these games, or pick a few and dig deep? I can never decide!
Mordor for me as it was a brilliant game that made up for the delay of Batman and a great competitor for Assassin Creed.
Alien Isolation aint on the list? Boo. I'm crawling through this epic space horror game. It is truly terrifying. Varied gameplay, intense AI... I am on the hard difficulty, and it makes me scared every time I play. Bravo. Thanks for mixing up the 1personshooter for me.
Mordor was a close second, and man I loved Infamous, too.
I understand that you guys don't really like Unity. However, it was still one of the biggest releases of the year and a lot of people (including myself) really enjoy playing that game. It should at least be on that list.
Destiny? And I thought you all hated it.
@charlesnarles haha I love skyrim, amazing game
@zeldagaymer93 agreed but it got slammed on here. I am still enjoying unity now. Can't wait for the dlc
@zeldagaymer93 Yeah, I don't play AC, but including Rouge but not Unity was rediculous. Espcially considering games like Conception, Football manager, and Jojo bizarre adventure are on there. All with 0 votes when Unity would have gotten some.
@zeldagaymer93 @Mrskinner @Jaz007 It works both ways. For some people, Unity was and still is a terrible, broken mess. With that in mind, we couldn't possibly put it on our list.
Transistor by a absolute schmucking mile, low budget indie, that was a far more memorable experience than the vast majority of so called triple AAA garbage.
I get the feeling that certain members of Push square staff, aint even played transistor .=)
Tough one as Transistor, LBP 3, CoD: AW and others are in my backlog waiting to be played...
Have to say I loved Child of Light. Was the best JRPG I played in a while and it's not even Japanese!
Infamous was fun and looked great, Watch Dogs I thought unfairly criticised (except the graphics downgrade), Driveclub was awesome eventually (why is it not on the list?!) and Shadow of Mordor also excellent...
The FINISHED drive club, is a superb game. Infact i love it. Hope sony give evolution a second bite of their admittedly rancid cherry, with a sequel to DC.
i voted for destiny, yeah it can be a bit of a grind, and it feels rather empty
playing alone, but with a team of three or six it really is a lot of fun.
my teammates went missing this week, i had to do the nightfall strike
on my own, it took me forever (hour and 20mln).
since i got my ps4 this year i also really enjoyed second son, flower,
and P.T. Still not played mordor and far cry 4.
Was I the only one who voted for Tales of Xillia 2? Well I guess I'm not shocked considering all of the awesome PS4 titles. I just loved that universe so I was pumped for the second one to come out
In fairness who the heck has played all the games on that list? Not me for sure!!.
I dare say the Push square staff aint either. Especially transistor !!!
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes for me! So hyped for Phantom Pain in 2015!
GTA V first and then Infamous Second Son. Non PS4 game of the year:MK8
I voted other, Disney Infinity 2.0. I really enjoy that game, especially now that Marvel characters have entered the game.
Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare ignored yet again. More fun than every game in that list combined. After Mario Kart 8 it's game of the year for me on all formats.
Shadow of Mordor for me.
Child of Light was hands down my favorite PS game of 2014.
I knew I should've played 'Other'!
@rastamadeus Game of the Year indeed! 10/10 fun and opening packs is the best thing ever...
Dragon age, close behind was south park.
Voted for DAI, but also loved AC4 , Infamous SS and Tomb raider.
Destiny beta put me to sleep repeatedly, so I am glad I did not bother with that overrated piece of c.... (Just IMOO)
Actually really liked AC Unity, but played it on XB1, so does not apply here.
Finally, Although FC4 is at times really frustrating (sorry WWF, but in-game I really hate honey badgers, Eagles and all the other assorted wildlife that continually ruin my day), at its best it provides an amazing sandbox experience
Infamous second son is my winner, but a close second would be ac unity. In the final chapter and I've loved it so far. I really like the changes they've made to the formula.
Oh dear. I liked Infamous Second Son as much as the next guy, but it's not even a shred of the game Dragon Age Inquisition is. Infamous is a good, solid B-tier game. And a fine one at that. But Dragon Age is a giant- an incredible, triumphant, top-tier AAA game, and one of the finest I've played in the last 10 years.
N0ne if GTA V new gen doesn't count.
@JaxonH
Don't know if I'd lavish that much praise on it, but I do have to admit, DA: I is a much better game than I thought it was going to be (not a usually a fan of medieval settings). I'm hopeful now that just maybe, Bioware won't screw up the next Mass Effect.
@Gamer83 have you made it to Skyhold yet? The game was really good before, but Skyhold is where the game morphs into something truly great
@JaxonH
Not there yet, but I can tell as with all Bioware RPGs, the game is going to start a little slow but once the initial grind is over and I've gotten used to the item management systems and all that, that I'm going to be in for a good time.
@Gamer83 Around the time you hit level 8, that's when everything changes. There is a mission that appears with recommended level of 8-11, that's when you know epic events are upon you, and everything is about to change
@charlesnarles - Good to read, just installed and patched today, then ran out of time to play.
Well I can see why my desire to get a PS4 was low this year. I think I only played 1 game on the list - Child of Light on my Wii U. Really not interested in that many outside of Dragon Age: Inquisition and LBP3 which my son is getting for his birthday in 2 weeks.
The list makes me think Nintendo should have tried a little harder w/ Wii U this year, while Sony has the quantity Wii U had some exclusive quality this year: MK8, Hyrule Warriors, SSBU, Bayonetta 2, DKC:TF (seems like forever ago, no? @JaxonH) Its a short list, but its a good list, Nintendo could have advertised it more. Wii U also has a great line-up next year that Nintendo wont market either.
Next year - Uncharted 4 and FFXV top the list, and Batman and MGS. Somebody pull this list out next year, I think it will look meh in comparison.
@rjejr DKC Tropical Freeze is eternal. Forever the greatest that ever was.
And ya, 2015 is gonna be no holds barred. Batman Arkham Knight and Witcher 3, to FFXV and Uncharted 4, to Zelda U and Xenoblade X, to Code Name Steam and Monster Hunter 4, to Halo 5 and Scalebound... We're talking legendary status here. One for the history books junior
VERY HAPPY TO SEE DR: Inquisition make the comeback it did! For me it is hands down game of the year. I am over 70 hrs in and I have barely touched the main story (which is amazing btw) it is the only game this year I find myself being completely sucked into. I turned 33 in Sept. And thought I may be getting to old for gaming because I didn't find myself enjoying it anymore.. Inquisition changed that for me GOTY
@JaxonH
Well, I'm getting close then. I'm not really a fan of this kind of fantasy stuff but I'm also not a fan of Star Wars and after the first 8 or so hours of the original Knights of the Old Republic, I found myself starting to get hooked so I'm hoping DA: I does the same. Good RPGs are too rare these days, Western and Japanese alike.
Dragon age for me is the best rpg on playstation since ffxii!! Also my first plat, so happy haha
@JaxonH - I thought Scalebound was just Sin's thing.
Yeah, if all those games were to actually release in 1 year, that's kinda whack. Platinum is kinda slow, Squenix is slow slow, and Wii U might actually self-destruct if XCX, Zelda U and Starfox all release next holiday. I'll try to maintain an optimistic calendar approach. There hasn't been a single game delay announcement yet this year
And who are you calling junior?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBdBCTvK5zM
Second Son is one of my fave PS4 games so far.
It's funny how COD AW has 0 votes so far lol maybe because its pants
PS4: inFAMOUS Second Son
PS3: South Park: The Stick of Truth
Vita: Freedom Wars
Digital: inFAMOUS: First Light
Studio of the Year: Sucker Punch Productions
PS Plus: Batman: Arkham City
Most Anticipated 2015: Batman: Arkham Knight
I've only played Batman: Arkham City though, since I don't own a PS4 or Vita, and I'm still waiting for South Park: The Stick of Truth to drop down in price to $30 New retail.
(I don't buy games digitally if they have a retail version)
Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn, with Lego Batman 3 in close second (Platinumed the latter on both PS3 and PS4).
I have not beaten a single game on ps4 yet.Just doing into different games.2015 I need to concentrate on backlog.
@Davros79 Hey, I played Transistor It missed out on my top 3 by a gnat's wing, but it was definitely a highlight of the year. So much atmosphere, and such a brilliant setting.
@k_andersen True , my comment was abit tongue-in-cheek ! it was actually your review that convinced me to buy transistor. Superb game.
@Davros79 Hahahaha! Also, thanks for reading
Wanted to vote for shadow of Mordor and dragon age but went for dragon age because it's just so in depth and engrossing. I dearly love shadow though, just wish it had been longer. The last of us remastered would also get a vote because I never got around to playing it on the ps3 and I thought it was amazing. Oh and Diablo 3 ultimate evil because I've been playing it since the pc release and was super impressed with how well it works on console and I really enjoy playing it with my OH.
Wassup gamers, this is defiantly the year of gaming so I'm wishing all y'all a happy new year an see y'all behind the controller 😁😁 😚💨💨💨
Another vote for Driveclub , its head and shoulders the best now that it's working.
@charlesnarles We will be waiting a long time for a game to be better than Skyrim!. 😕
I went with Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. It was the only game I bought on a Sony system in 2014.
Voted for shadow of mordor. I might have voted for dragon age but haven't played it yet. I got a feeling that might be the best game of last year
Can "other" not be an option in future poll's? Please
Ooooh, Dragon Age is winning by quite a margin right now. Deserved as far as I'm concerned!
@ShogunRok I think you would be surprised at just how many votes it would have gotten. I'm not saying it deserves to be GOTY. But it definitely deserves to be up there to choose from. This site totally exaggerated the problems with Unity.
I absolutely loved The last of us remastered. But it's wasint really a 2014 game. So my other pick is Shadow of Mordor. Awesome game.
@Mrskinner. Me too.
@ShogunRok see I understand that and would have no issue with it being excluded if there was consistency. However when battlefield 4 was included in last years poll I don't see why unity could not be included this year. Battlefield 4's launch was atrocious.
@ShogunRok couldn't put it on your list? Sorry, that' s kind of BS. If people agreed with you, they don't have to vote for it.but for some of us it was the most fun game of the year, it's all I've been playing since launch with no complaints except a little choppinness at times.
All games in the list are poor. 2014 was appalling. 2013 was massive. My favourite game of 2014 wasn't even in the list. And dragon age at 23% is hardly a majority is it. Utter waste of time playstation at the moment. I they'd have not bothered with ps4 and stuck with what was working so well for ps3. The ps4 is rubbish.
Just finished ac unity last night and I just wanted to throw out there that it is one of my favorite ac's of all time. It really went deeper into making you feel like an assassin with the stealth and parkour tweaks. They made combat more interesting, they made the world feel more alive, I liked (although I understand not for everyone) the armor, weapon, and skill system...and I love the way Arno thinks about the assassinations before they happen. I haven't tried the multiplayer yet because I turned off the Internet to play. No glitches, no framerate drops. Single player for me was 9/10.
@ztpayne7
Having played it after it was patched up, I agree, AC Unity is a great game, probably my third favorite in the series after 2 and 4. It'd have been an easy 8.5/10 had the game not released in such a poor state, unfortunately Ubisoft screwed the pooch on launch day and rightly the game was slammed for it. It's a shame but that's going to be the only way these scumbag publishers- especially the ones who like to force yearly development cycles on series that would clearly benefit from 2 or 3 years dev time- are going to learn. I have no problem with all the 5/10 and lower that Unity received nor is there a problem with it being left off the list because of that. It clearly wasn't Game of the Year. And at least PushSquare is being consistent, they also left the first-party published DriveClub off the list, and several of the staff like that game.
@Gamer83 as I said in my earlier post I would have no issue with anything that you have just said apart from the fact that battlefield 4 was included in last years list. If a game is to be slammed for being atrocious at launch for some, I just feel there should be consistency. That's my only gripe, I have really enjoyed unity from day one.
I voted Other as Guilty Gear Xrd was my favorite of the year.
@Mrskinner @bikeface @zeldagaymer93
I'm afraid I can't agree at all. In the state that Unity launched in, putting it anywhere near a Game of the Year shortlist is an affront to any developer who actually ships their game in a reasonable condition.
By saying it should be there, you're basically saying that putting games out in an unfinished state is acceptable — and it certainly shouldn't be.
Fair enough if you're enjoying it right now — more power to you — but it's not on this list for very, very good reasons. When we reviewed it, the game was an absolute mess — there's nothing else to say on the matter.
@ShogunRok fair enough, no more to be said, I just find it hypocritical when battlefield 4 made the goty voting list last year after being classed unplayable at launch. And I'm not enjoying it right now, I have actually enjoyed it from day one, just wanted to get that point across before going away with my opinions
I went with Far Cry 4, since I haven't yet played GTA5 or DAInq. I just finished it last night to 100% completion, which is a rarity for me.
@ShogunRok have to agree, unity still runs like garbage even after patch 4!!, ubisoft, Wouldn't be giving away free games and dlc otherwise!!!
Apologies for those that wanted DriveClub and Assassin's Creed Unity in the list. As @ShogunRok says, we didn't include either due to the launch issues. DriveClub's actually right up there for me, we just didn't think it felt right including either game for the aforesaid reasons.
That said, don't think we're not listening to the feedback. I'm super proud of this year's Game of the Year coverage, but I still think there are areas we can improve in 2015, so we're definitely taking all ideas and suggestions on board.
@Mrskinner
Oh I agree about Brokenfield 4, that game should've been no where near any Game of the Year 2013 lists but that's well past now. If journalists are going to start getting tougher on games that release in a piss poor way now, I say better late than never. It's a shame games from other years didn't get slammed for it the way they deserved but you can't change any of that, just try to do better in the future. I was thrilled to see some websites destroy DriveClub, AC Unity and Halo MCC for broken pieces of sh*t on day one.
@get2sammyb fair enough
@Gamer83 fair point
@ShogunRok I thought the point of a user poll was to find what your readers considered their game of the year was, for themselves. To eliminate a choice from them based on your own experience is un petit peu lache, n'est pas?
I hope you guys realize that you are holding Ubisoft to a standard that you yourselves do not reach, nor seem to aspire to reach.
@bikeface Of course, but we weren't going to include games in our reader poll that didn't make it into our staff poll — that's why we always try to include the 'other' option.
As for standards, I'm not sure how you can compare our website to a game. No need to go into snide comment territory, I'm glad you're enjoying Unity more than we did.
@bikeface The problem is ubisoft cant even match their own previous standards. Hence why AC4 black flag looks 10 times better (in motion) than next gen only UNITY.
UNITY is a game that was bulit for NEXT GEN machines and high end PCs ONLY. With this in mind, it makes the games woeful performance issues even more laughable !!
I cant believe how some people can turn a blind eye to unitys woeful performance issues.
Ubisoft know the games performance stinks!! Thats why they are giving away free games and DLC!!
I'm gonna go with Sportsfriends on PS4. Playing Joust with my family is too much fun. Other than that I really dug NBA2K15 and Strider (both on PS4).
Hands down Driveclub. A truly "next-gen" game with possibly the best graphics to ever grace a console. Fantastic audio too, and really fun to play.
@ShogunRok I let a day go by to think about this. I started using your website about 3 years ago as my main source for PlayStation news because I appreciate your sense of humor and there is less of the fanboy wars here than other sites. Overall I have been appreciative of your efforts. But frankly your coverage of Unity has been atrocious. I understand many people have had issues, very serious issues, but your reporting on a game which personally I would rate a 9 has been so fixated on the bad launch that instead of simply giving us information as it happens you seem to be actively trying to discourage anyone who might have interest in the game from checking it out. You've been like the girlfriend who can't have any discussion without mentioning that time you left the toilet seat up. And when it comes time for a reader poll, you ignore the fact that the game sold very well, most sites rated it much higher than you, and some of your readers had already been quite vocal about their experiences with the game being quite different from yours, and instead of allowing readers to disagree with you with a simple vote, you leave it off your poll and claim it is a matter of principle. At the same time you point out that you welcome the "other" opinion...
As for standards, you barely give credit to Ubisoft for working hard to patch the game and appease valued customers, while your coverage retreads snarky jibes, and your main intent seems to be to make sure that you include a play on words in the article, and the only meaningful information is a link to eurogamer. So no, I have not been overly impressed of late.
@Davros79 black flag was pretty much the worst assassin's creed game for me. Unity has only been a little choppy at times, which I can tolerate because of the value they have added everywhere else. My point is not that Ubisoft couldn't have done better, but that to leave it off the poll is not a principled act by Push square. I remember a game called Skyrim that forced me to reboot my Ps3 multiple times per night, yet still raked in many GOTY awards. Not that Unity would be many people's choice, but to act like it would be wrong to let people vote for it is ridiculous. Seriously to me this game is obviously way more ambitious than Black Flag, and the fact that there have been issues is disappointing but not shocking.
