You are a warrior that has beef with the Gods, and must scale Mount Olympus in order to dish out some rough justice of your own. Stop us if you've heard this one before. Apotheon, the PlayStation 4's headline PlayStation Plus freebie in February, may sound a lot like a certain other Sony developed series, but the side scroller's got a style all of its own.
Inspired by ancient Greek pottery, the title looks unlike anything else – but it's more than just a pretty face. The combat's based upon a simple set of moves, which developer Alien Trap Games hopes will emphasise the deeper systems at play. "Skills like timing, positioning, and reading your opponent's movements are at the core here," designer Jesse McGibney wrote on the PlayStation Blog last year.
You'll need to do more than master your skills, though, as there will be some light role-playing elements at play. For starters, your weapons will perish if you overexert them, so you'll need to scavenge for new ones, and even engage in a spot of crafting to ensure that your gear's in tip-top condition. Of course, there'll be shops for you to spend your looted coins in, too.
The really cool thing, however, is that you're free to approach the release whichever way you like. "Crash Apollo's extravagant party," McGibney explained, "test your wits against the dangerous forests of Artemis, or maybe just break into some Agora houses to plunder some shiny Olympian treasure." All sounds a bit Mega Man, doesn't it?
While we suspect that this isn't going to be everyone's goblet of fine Mediterranean wine, it's nice to see something so wildly different included in the Instant Game Collection lineup. Will you be giving this a try, or casting it to the pits of Hades? Show us your sword and shield in the comments section below.

Always give a PS Plus game a try, especially one that's a bit different like this. Looks like one that'll be good for remote play from the Vita in bed
Will give it a try but then again I try all the PSN freebies at least once even if they seem like they wont be my type of game. You never know what gem you may miss out on.
Yeah im certainly interested.it will act as a great pallet cleanser before The Order comes out. That is if i can put down Grim Fandango long enough.
Sounds pretty cool. I'll have to play this one in a timely manner when it comes out.
I'll certainly confirm the free purchase but it'll probably be a while before I download it as I only have around 1.5gb left on my PS4's HDD lol.
@WARDIE: I feel you man. I am thinking that with taxes I am going to pick up a new HD for my PS4.
@Tasuki Upgraded mine to 2tb a couple weeks ago, certainly worth it!
Looks and sounds crap, I wont be playing this sorry excuse for a freebie.
Beautiful art style and an interesting premise for a game handled in an interesting way. My love of smaller indie titles continues. As others have said, I give every plus game a fair go.
@xMEADx You don't like games, that's it.
This games looks awesome, sounds awesome and is probably awesome, I'm way excited for this! This month PS PLUS is great
Can. Not. Wait! Had my eyes on this for months, and the old Ancient Greek tales haven't really been touched over these last few years.
On that note, here's hoping for another Shadow Of Rome!
You know i only just noticed why the picture is captioned " Cover up mate." LOL
@professorhat I would add to that, always give a freebie PS+ game a try ON A GUEST ACCOUNT! Since we can't delete entries off our trophy list, it sucks to have to wade through 50 or so %0 lists. (And the number grows every month!).
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya same man, I've been excited for this ever since the initial reveal on the blog a few months back. This has been an amazing month for PS plus!
@thedevilsjester Have to say this has never bothered me in the slightest, but then I don't pay that much attention to trophies personally. Don't your most recent ones get sorted to the top? Mine do - if so, why do you need to scroll through them?
@professorhat
When you have two hundred or so games on your trophy list, and about half of them are games you tried out and didn't like, well, it's not so nice anymore.
You can sort them like that, but not only do I often want to find a game I never platinumed, and finish it out (more so now with phasing out the PS3) but also it's difficult to find one specific game (especially if comparing with friends) when they are in played order. Having too many game entries in the trophy list is absolutely a huge problem that I hope Sony provides a solution to this generation!
