PlayStation 4 Hardware Sales Japan

Hot on the heels of yesterday's Japanese doom and gloom, there's some good news for the PlayStation 4 in Japan – as it's passed one million units in the all-important region. The latest Media Create data shows that the system sold a reasonable 42,216 consoles during the week ending 4th January, which was enough to tip its install base over the aforementioned milestone.

This means that it's taken the console about ten months to cross the target, when the PlayStation 3 did it in around nine. Considering the system's software lineup so far, though, that's not a terrible achievement – and we're sure that the likes of Dragon Quest Heroes, Final Fantasy Type-0, and Yakuza Zero will give it some more momentum over the coming months.

Alas, whether the device can match its predecessor's 10 million lifetime tally remains to be seen, as consumers are slowly turning their attention to smartphones in the region. Either way, this is good news in the short term for Sony, as Japan is just the latest in a long line of countries to cross the one million units milestone. We suspect that many more will follow in 2015, too.
