We can honestly say that we've never had the desire to play games with celebrities, but we suppose that it's an appealing enough idea for some. Either way, Sony's using that concept to do some good with its new PlayStation Heroes application. Available from the PlayStation Store starting from 24th February in North America, the PlayStation 4 download will provide you with access to various themes, which you'll be able to purchase using your PlayStation Network wallet. These will have different values, and the more that you nab, the greater your chance of being matched up with a big name will be.
Don't worry, this isn't a scam. The platform holder claims that 90 per cent of the cash raised will be donated to charities like Make-a-Wish, USO, and the V Foundation. Each month, you'll be paying to be in with a chance of playing with a different celebrity, with snowboarder Shaun White up first. Stephen Curry, Snoop Dogg, and Yasier Puig are also in the immediate pipeline, with many more to follow. You can catch a glimpse of that lineup courtesy of the eighties-inspired cartoon embedded below.
The manufacturer's also confirmed that it'll be donating $100,000 to each of the aforementioned charities to kickstart the initiative; clearly all of that PS4 profit is burning a hole in its pocket. To be honest, we're not sure how successful this is going to be, but we have to commend the company for attempting to raise some serious cash, while still keeping its consumers engaged. We're not especially interested in playing with celebrities, but fundraisers are something that we can always get behind, so we hope that this works out.

I was at the reveal event. Snoop performed for an hour and we were right up front and center with our hands on the stage. Steve Curry, Yasiel Puig and Shaun White were all approachable. The venue was classy and an open bar was a plus. A memorable experience. This initiative has potential but must be constantly promoted. I suggested to some of the Sony staff to think about implementing activities and Trophies into the PlayStation Heroes App. This initiative may someday die down but Trophies last forever.
