Evolve's doing itself no favours is it? While the four-versus-one shooter has received some largely positive reviews from critics, its maddening pre-order campaign and the sheer amount of different day one editions that were available across consoles and PC put the game in a negative light for many potential buyers.
What we're really struggling to wrap our head around, though, is the fact that today, on the day of the title's release, there's just over $60 worth of downloadable content to be had. The rather startling figure comes from Destructoid, who added together the prices of each DLC bundle. It gets even more baffling, however, when you factor in that this content is purely cosmetic, with optional skin textures as far as the eye can see. And remember, this isn't taking the title's season pass price into account, either.
What do you make of Evolve's DLC plan? Hunt us down in the comments section below.

That's so anti-consumer that... well, I don't know really. It boggles the mind.
While I'm sure it's a solid game, all of this Evolve DLC talk has left me uninterested.......I don't want to buy a game for full price, yet still have that question mark in my head asking if I just bought 60% of everything on offer.
Makes me miss the good old days of PC expansion packs.
@sub12 amen!
The sad thing is companies do this because gamers flood them with hard earned cash. Somewhere out there a guy in a suit is swimming in money and laughing!
This would be totally fine if the game was free to start with.
Disgusting.
This is ridiculous
This is such a bad idea. A new IP with $60 of DLC day one, plus a season pass? That's anti-consumer and anti-buy-our-product. They are not hyped to heck, and need to have good PR with the game. Many people are already skeptical. This doesn't help, at all.
While we're on the subject, anyone miss the day costumes were unlocked, rather than being released in DLC, and then the extra colors being released as more DLC? They're not even reasonably priced (and I don't mean free, which the true answer here.)
@Jaz007 I really, really miss unlockable costumes. Some games still have them, but they're few and far between.
Really? Full price + season pass + DLC and publisher will question why the new IP didn't sell enough...
Word is that its as dull as hell after the first few matches
really?! for day 1 DLC, i would rather pay that to roll around in a thorn bush for 24 hours, let's pray this doesnt become a trend for big AAA titles, next we will be paying to play the game every hour.
$60 for day 1 dlc - Worse than EA
@ShogunRok completing games on the hardest difficulty for costumes, characters and secret endings, those were the days.
That price for skins.....
Well, looking good does cost a lot of cash.
To be fair, and I never thought I'd defend DLC, considering it's all cosmetic, it's not actually intended to be purchased together. Usually people will pick and choose different skins they like and buy up 1 or 2 each, or none at all (like me, who hates most DLC and thinks it's a waste of money...generally).
So in essence, they aren't actually offering $60 worth of DLC, but providing a wide array of DLC that can and will be consumed in separately, which TOTALS $60. Subtle difference, but a difference nonetheless.
Disclaimer: I've only ever bought Mass Effect DLC (because the game is crack) and the poker DLC for RDR.
im ok if its only cosmetic.
That is nut's, $5.99 USD for each Skin.
I don't need cosmetic updates tho, my friends all bought bacon camos and such for call of duty but I don't see the point so it doesn't affect me.
I hope they learn from this. Or I should say, that consumers make them learn from this. DLC continues because we buy it. Some DLC is reasonable, too, to expand on a game you really like. This is the kind of money grab that we see in some F2P and online games. The new normal?
I remember Left 4 Dead on Xbox 360, dlc was charged for as per.. Bought the PC one and well, more maps, skins, mods and all free.
Not suggesting it will change but, its about time this crap stopped for console gamers. rinsing wallets just because they can is starting to grate
On the topic of rinsing. Motorcycle Club on UK store £54.99
On US store $29.99.. Don't care if its good or not, just fed up with the price differences
Love gaming and been enjoying it since my binatone days but I am starting to get hacked off at the royal kicking we get in the UK online stores.. Why should I need another account to get a better deal... ???
@dellyrascal L4D had paid updated because Sony and Microsoft not because Valve as far as i know
I've had it with day one DLC, to put it simply. I actually support DLC if it's done right, but cutting things out and selling it piecemeal on the day of release to me is disgusting. I vote with my wallet...I just wish more people did the same. The only reason developers continue to do things like this, is so many people buy into it.
I was looking at the USA PSN Store update & saw all the day 1 DLC for this game & thought WTF What a JOKE. I wish people would do what i do & just ignore DLC. Oh well.
I sort of decided I was only going to buy this when it was $30 anyways, and I don't buy skins, heck if I wait long enough maybe they'll put out a GOTY edition and I can have it all.
@sub12 "PC expansion packs"
@ShogunRok Yeah, I espcially hate it when a game like Samurai Warriors 4 doesn't have them. Didn't the old ones used too? (Not sure). The games are perfect for them, but instead they sell them for ridiculous prices.
On a side note, can you obtain those items by any other way? like TF2 were you could buy hats/weapons but simply by playing the game or crafting you can get your hands on those items too, so it never feels cheap
Not to mention mose of the items are only cosmetical and the new weapons arent neither better or worse than the original ones
If thats so, im kinda ok with it, if not... then this sucks
@blah01 If that's the case, having a bunch of free, in-game, unlockable costumes would help keep people playing. Instead, we have this...
@ShogunRok yeah me too, for me an incentive to almost start pcgaming again. To get all that stuff for free.
I really think if youre a decent company you hold 'mod competitions' on PC, and the ones that come out best get released on console for free. If youre the person that created the skin or whatever its really cool that your work gets appreciated, all the console gamers get free stuff, and itll cost the publisher or developer nearly nothing and you keep people playing your game. Its a win/win/win..
Wait, this is seriously considered news?
Boy, you guys are getting mad about something so trivial its laughable. Skin packs, that impact less than zero parts of gameplay are getting flak. What's next, complaining that MMOs charge for aesthetic outfits that do nothing to affect your stats? Oh wait they've been doing that for years, but that's ok, and they even have subscription model, yet everyone's mouth stay shut.
This isn't anti-consumer, this is creating a problem where there is none. Either you guys are massive hypocrites or have played such a small variety of games that this is, for some reason, a shock to you.
Not only is it crazy to cut this from the game but to sell it for $5 to recolor a skin?? Maybe a dollar a pack of four.
How much time and work goes in that? All for a possible 10's of thousands of dollars!! Greedy Crazy Crap. You wand to make DLC is should be added content to play in the games! Something that extends the life of the game After the launch, You know extra cost for extra WORK!
@Dragpk7 the issue people are having with this is that the game is one day old and that you allready have to pay for extra content.
@Dragpk7 Who says we're mad? We're just informing people they can spend $60 on day one DLC, which they can, if they choose to.
@Flurpsel Are we really considering extra content a recolor though. Are people really that upset about paying for something that has no impact on your overall enjoyment of the game, when you can unlock Elite camos just by playing the game regularly?
All that DLC makes me wonder if buying the actual game is really giving a person $60 worth of entertainment. With all the DLC that already came out with Evolve, I'm questioning as to if the normal part of the game is even worth it and they are nickle and diming you for the rest of the stuff to create a more full game. I won't buy it.
This is a disgrace, as this content was clearly pulled from the main game. I will not be supporting this trash.
Does this effect the content (game) you buy day one? the answer to that is no, the key word here is "choose".
If people want to complain about DLC complain about DLC that actually effects the game you buy, which Destiny's DLC does just that while also being overpriced.
