As the great Taylor Swift once sang, we don't know how it gets bigger than this. Or was that "better than this" – we forget. The point is that Bloodborne is out imminently, and the press have been testing their collective patience against From Software's latest foray. We're still getting a feel for the release's many repugnant enemies, so we're not quite ready to bring you our Tales from Yharnam just yet – but other parts of the media are. With expectations sky high ahead of a series of first-party letdowns, can the spiritual successor to Demon's Souls turn things around on the exclusives front?
Digital Spy - 5/5
Bloodborne may not be a Souls game and it doesn't fall into the horror genre, but it captures everything that makes the series so satisfying, so terrifying and so magical. I want to keep playing, I want to discover its secrets, I want to fight every monster, try every weapon, discuss theories and explore as many of the community dungeons as possible. To put it bluntly, I want to bleed the game dry.
The Jimquisition - 10/10
Bloodborne is as glorious as it is grotesque, a harsh and unyielding exercise in getting battered mercilessly while feeling encouraged the whole painful way. While very much a Souls game through and through, the switch from methodical and slow progression to a faster, ultimately more savage environment provides just enough of a twist to give it a wholly unique feel, a more empowering journey, for both the player and the opposition. Bloodborne is something truly special – a barbaric horror RPG that will giveth and taketh away in perfect measure, wrapped up in a perverse world that will refuse to let you go.
Game Informer - 9.75/10
Bloodborne is a blood-drenched horror gem that has only the faintest of cracks in its façade. Bloodborne succeeds through sparse storytelling, lush atmospheres (conjuring up notions of the best of Lovecraft's work), and tight combat that forces you to be aggressive. While this new IP doesn't stray far from the established Souls franchise, it is a magical, wondrous work that admirably instills both terror and triumph in those brave enough to delve into it.
EGM - 9.5/10
Though built on the same core as the Souls games, Bloodborne marks the largest departure from the status quo to date. The numerous changes, many in service of a faster and more aggressive playstyle, might not be for everyone, but if you embrace that shift, you might well have a new favorite in the From Software canon.
Destructoid - 9/10
Bloodborne is an interesting mix of everything From Software has learned throughout its storied developmental career. Not everything will gel with fans old and new, but for the most part, the shift towards a combat-oriented game is a net positive. From Software is still one of the only developers left that makes you work for your satisfaction, and Bloodborne is damn satisfying.
GameSpot - 9/10
The finest treasures are found within the city of Yharnam and the forests, lakes, and purgatories beyond it. Only Bloodborne would be so bold as to bury an entire factional player-versus-player mechanic within an optional region, which is in turn buried within a series of oblique steps you might miss if you aren't exploring every nook and cranny, or ignore the game's enigmatic hints. I finished Bloodborne in less time than I did Dark Souls II, yet I treasure it more in spite of its few missteps. In death there is life, and in blood, there is redemption. More hyperbole, yes, but for a game this theatrical, only hyperbole will do.
Gamesradar + - 9/10
Bloodborne lies somewhere between Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2, better than the latter but not quite as good as the former. The fourth time following the same template means the master strokes, however masterful they are, are anticipated. But take nothing away from this brilliant, brooding, brutal reinvention, because almost as great as the best game ever is pretty bloody great.

Did someone order a top-notch, AAA PS4 exclusive?
This is a bit more like it. Can we stop banging on about killer apps now? No? Okay...
@get2sammyb in order looks the best game of the PS4, until now, arrived.
Oh lawd the hype has taken me
Just ordered my copy from Amazon
Those scores. Killer app confirmed. Order also confirmed.
@ShogunRok "Bloodborne may be great, but PS4 still doesn't have any AAA games that interest me..."
I've never played a Souls type game before but I pre-ordered this via PSN to see what all the fuss is about. I watched some gameplay, looks fun. Hopefully I will like it. Who knows, maybe I will love it?
Sounds awesome! And a lot of the games minor flawes can be fixed with future patches . Finally hype that was real ! If I didn't have to go work at 5a.m. I'd run and get this at midnight ! Ah well..... Tomorrow after work ! I hope there's still some copies left
As expected from a From Software and Sony Japan Studio game. With A Thief's End delayed til next year I think GOTY is going to come down to MGSVTPP and Bloodborne. Nothing else can compare.
I still have that feeling in my mouth that if it had been an xbox exclusive it would be 10/10 across the board.
9.75,Really?
Great job by From Software. Took too long but finally a killer app. Unfortunately I absolutely suck at the Souls games so will be skipping this but I hope everybody else enjoys.
When can we expect the PushSquare review by the way?
T-minus an hour and 15 minutes till I crank into this here on the east coast. Glad I have tomorrow off.
@KAPADO No, you don't get to play the disenfranchised media conspiracy card here. Bloodborne's current 93 metacritic score is two points higher than any Xbox one game ever, excepting GTA V, which has the same score across both systems (97). Playstation fans have no cause to be maudlin.
@Gamer83 As soon as possible. I wish we could publish it now, but... Well, let's just say our copy didn't arrive in a particularly timely manner. We're ready and raring to cover these games, but, sadly, we're not getting the access that we'd like a lot of the time.
We're working really hard on it, though.
@get2sammyb
Cool, looking forward to the review. After hearing from some friends who somehow got advance copies, I'm thinking I may actually trade in The Order and give it a go. Sounds brutal but at the same time when a game receives this much acclaim, I want to play it.
@Swiket
Yeah, Sony needs to keep that close relationship with From Software intact. If it wasn't obvious before, that studio is the real deal.
Wow! Greatness has finally arrived!
This should be a nice exclusive to keep the talk on the PS4 until The Witcher comes out in May. March has been a good month for opening up this years RPG season.
Yeah! Ahh, I can't wait to get this tomorrow! I wish I had gone to the midnight launch now!
This game is a must have it's amazing. nothing like it. the monsters are insane.
Huh, I really wasn't intruiged by this that much, but knowing it's actually a good game I may just have to look into it!
I suck to much to buy/play THIS game but I'm glad Sony Worldwide Studios has A 9/10 /10/10 game, (finally) under their belt!!
I gotta say I'm actually surprised by this.
Sold.
@Dohv sadly, It'll certainly be Halo 5 to win the GOTY this year. Because it's an XBOX ONE exclusive. nothing can beat that....
@whywai88
If Zelda makes it out this year I'd say that's the game that has a better chance than Halo 5. Halo is my favorite franchise but I can't remember the last time a Halo game pulled in a good number of overall Game of the Year awards or the last time it really deserved to. It might've been Halo 2 but only Halo 1, for its time, was truly deserving of the honor. 2004 also had MGS 3 and GTA San Andreas, which were infinitely better than Halo 2. I think Halo 5 is going to be good, but given 343's track record I'm not ready to give the benefit of the doubt for a GOTY contender yet, even if you want to play the media conspiracy card. Halo gets high scores but then when it comes time for the awards other games usually overshadow it, and in most cases, deservedly so.
I was almost sure this game will get fantastic reviews. When is Pushsquare's review coming out?.
@TVRFLY Are you playing it?. How's the combat?. I preordered it from PS Store EU and it's realeasing tomorrow.
Fantastic game.
@Swiket fun fact: dark souls ii was not directed by the same director in Demons Souls and Dark Souls. The reigns were back to Hidetaka Miyazaki for Bloodborne, so it should be stellar
@get2sammyb
It's those damn load times!
MEHHEHHEHHHH crying so happy. so happy.
one day left sukkas
i recon when they fix those load times witch they said will be fixed in a patch then for most of these it will be 10/10 or 9.5/10
Omg.... Another day of pain before i ll start to keep dying over and over!
Long loading times? Didnt everybody on this site just agree thats possibly the most frustrating thing in a game? I say minus 3 points so thats like a 7 then..
Sounds like this game is being received very positively by the Journo's but then so were the Dark Souls games and I really didn't like them. I get the impression this will have a lot in common with those so I will probably give it a miss.
Incidentally I think Halo WAS a great series until Bungie left MS. Destiny won GotY at the Baftas and I would be very surprised if Halo 5 wins. If I was a betting man I would probably put money on Arkham Knight....
I still haven't gotten round to playing Dark Souls I and II so this has to wait a bit until then. Demon's Souls was magnificent but it's from that experience that I know how life consuming FROM's game are.
That's great, glad it's being so well received. Looks like I've this and Dark Souls 2 to play. I'll no doubt be picking this up easter bank holiday.
Game looks great, and I can't wait! I was disappointed in Lords Of The Fallen yet somehow like Murdered Soul Suspect. I can't wait to find a new game for the system that I can play for more than a few days without getting bored. Does anyone know if there will ever be a Dante's Inferno sequel?
Well, im buying this! Achter dying 18 times in one match on helldivers i can take it!
@Punished_Boss_84
About the loading times: Since our impressions went up, Sony have sent out an e-mail to the press, stating that the the development team is “currently exploring another patch” for Bloodborne, this one designed to reduce loading times and make other performance tweaks.

@Flurpsel See my post above
@get2sammyb something off-topic, I just asked fred dutton a question through twitter about the plus announcement and it's delayed 1 week (I assume because the first wednesday of april is after the first tuesday) ("@FredDutton just a question, will we get the igc announcement this week or will it be next week?") ("@darkswabber Next week")
https://twitter.com/FredDutton/status/580311162094489600
I hope this is usefull information
Well, that's good. I might consider getting it.
SBAAAAAM!!!! here we have a million extra ps4 sold worldwide this week....
I really don't know about this. It looks great, everyone is saying it's great but there's just something in the back of my head saying the hype is too much. Gonna get it i Friday with Borderlands Handsome Collection though.
@arnoldlayne83 Over half of those sites I've never heard of and never will again. Reviews mean naff all end of the day. Your own opinion is all that matters.
@Sanquine Nice that they deal with the problem after people have made a fuss. If they'd done it in the first place - like they and all game companies should - there would have been no bad press about the game over the weekend.
Damn...my money
@rastamadeus sure, but go on the web and find how many other games have the critic so alligned on such superb marks.....
this is the second high rated game on ps4 after GTA V....
Really pleased Sony has a killer App at last and hope everyone enjoys it! I will have to give it a miss, never been any good at the souls games unfortunately. Tried them all but the constant deaths just make me angry lol
Been excited about this game since day one the fact it has got good reviews is a huge plus.
93 on Metacritic!
@crazykcarter This, The WItcher 3 and in case dark souls II on ps4 will make me happy for the next 6 months.
And honestly, there is nothing coming to WiiU that interests me, apart maybe splatoon....
@crazykcarter have you tried Helldivers? That game is an addictive blast!
@arnoldlayne83
Wheres polygon? Those guys will give it a 6 or something
@rastamadeus
Beter late than never! It also could be battlefield 4 or Ac Unity getting good scores despite chrashes and horrible framerates
@Sanquine Uh yeah.....
they gave 7 to Bayonetta 2.... lmfao
Can you imagine there are lucky souls () out there who never played a From software title. Bloodborne will be their introduction to the "genre" and they'll be blown away like we once were with Demon or Dark Souls. I'm absolutely positive that BloodBorne is an excellent game, but will feel just like Dark Souls 1 and 2 felt for every veteran who started with Demon Souls. With Demon Souls it was a totally new experience and that sense of wonder I experienced back then simply can't be reproduced. That said: I'm really glad they weren't afraid to tackle the combat to make everything feel fresher than the transition to Dark Souls 2. I don't want boss battles just to be hard because of the isane difficulty, I want a challenge to master the controls too.
Wow... It must be good if Gamespot gave it a good score. Seriously though, this all looks great!!!
Great to hear! Picking my Collector's Edition up at GameStop today.
Well now I can't wait to get home. As the special edition should be there waiting for me.
@whywai88 I don't think I've ever seen a Xbox exclusive win GOTY. I don't think they have one that has.
@cherrypoppa Finally ? I hope you're talking about this gen only.
Nice to see this getting great reviews. I kinda expected the Japanese PS4 exclusive to come out on top (sorry Knack).
Still not getting a PS4 until Uncharted 4, though.
Hmmm. I have limited experience with Dark Souls and the like, so I'm not really sure I want to drop any cash on this yet, as I didn't care for aforementioned much. That and my backlog is so huge. But if it's this good... I may have to fold and at least buy when I come across a used copy.
Never played dark souls or demon skull but I want this it looks awesome
