We feel like Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park right now: the crowds are coming, and we sense that they may not be happy. This month's PlayStation Plus roster is packed with interesting titles – but may well be a little too indie focused for the hordes of haters that are becoming increasingly unhappy with the Instant Game Collection. So, what have we got?
Well, the headline titles on the PlayStation 4 include mindbender Ether One and enjoyable side-scroller Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition. New-gen gamers will also net Race the Sun, The Unfinished Swan, and Hohokum, as these are all cross-buy across all three of Sony's systems. The disappointing Murasaki Baby is the one outlier, as it's a PlayStation Vita exclusive.
There's tons of good quality content up for grabs this month, then – but with no retail releases in sight, we're predicting the odd angry comment below. Try to keep it civil, if you can.

Haters gonna hate but I love it. I only have Guacamelee and always wanted to try the rest. As for Ether One it looks interesting and it is at least something new.
The only problem is that i don't have just two of this six games, bad month for me.
Quite happy we're getting Murasaki and Hohokum. Was planning on buying both of them eventually.
Not a bad month really, although I could've sworn the original version of Guacamelee was given away for PS3 and Vita already? Not really sure there was enough added to warrant giving it away again as a new game in it's own right.
Oh well, you can't win em all! Hohokum and Race the Sun are fairly pleasing as far as I'm concerned, but I've just ordered Bloodborne so the PS+ selection was always going to take a backseat for me this month!
It's a bit rubbish to he honest. Guacamelee was great but the special edition isn't that much of an improvement, I have zero interest in Either One. Hohokum..... look. I could write an essay on why I despise it. Unfinished Swan is something I'll likely try for about 10 mins then go back to Shovel Knight or Bloodborne, Murasaki.... nah. No. Please, as I'd I'd even play that thing. That race the sun thing just looks pointless to me.
Nope. Nothing here. This is possibly the most boring month ever. It's not even offensively bad, it's just sort of there.
I own all of these except Ether One - but that can't be avoided. I do like nearly all of these games, though: The Unfinished Swan is a personal favourite, Race the Sun is great fun, Guacamelee's ace. I think Murasaki Baby's terrible, but that's a different dicussion entirely.
The one thing I will say is that, as aware of the criticisms as they must be, I don't really feel like Sony's picking the right types of games for this service anymore. The balance isn't right at the moment, and I'm not sure whether that's because they're getting lazy with this stuff now — or if they can't afford it anymore.
Guacamelee? YES PLEASE! Ether One will be the one I try with "okay" expectations and hope it ends up being great. Excited for Guacamelee though xD
The Unfinished Swan has always interested me and I never got it on PS3.
Looking at the video, Ether One might be worth some time, nice little puzzler.
Guacamelee…
I gotta say, Id rather eat my own face.
I cant say Im shocked though, its pretty much what we all expect to see, Indies and side scrollers, but its nice to see something that ISNT side scrolling this time around as well.
Makes a nice change.
I might wait another month renewing PS+ and just get Axiom Verge. Only one I want (and haven't played) is the Unfinished Swan but it'll be on sale again soon anyway.
But you can't expect many "AAA" games on PS4 when there aren't that many to choose from. (most are from publishers who dont want to "give away" their game) They could've included Little Big Planet though! Since its not selling that well.
@get2sammyb maybe it's because they're not getting enough negative feedback about the lineups. I'm a PS Plus member and I didn't really care for the last few lineups. I just don't take the time to complain about it to them. Maybe they're just sitting back thinking they can throw out a few weak months and a good one here or there
@SteveButler2210 Prepare to not play anything else for a while!
Not only is Bloodborne a good length, its just such a satisfying game to play.
Im certain youll love it!
@AyeHaley I generally agree with you, and am also very much of the mindset that "AAA" doesn't necessarily always mean better. I do think PlayStation Plus is in a rut at the moment, though, where its emphasis on puzzle games and platformers isn't really offering the variety that we've come to expect. Where are the racing games, role-playing games, shooting games, etc? It's all puzzlers, platformers, or puzzle platformers right now.
@Cowboysfan-22 I think there are enough people making a stink out there to make up for the rest of us to be honest. I'm sure they're hearing the feedback - it's just whether they're taking it on board!
Oh dear, played like a fiddle.
Im not a PS Plus suscriber, but from the outside looking on these are the types of games i would want from the service. AAA games seem great in theory but surely in practise people will predominantly own the ones they want and be fully aware of the ones they dont and why they dont. They are also often a significant time investment in comparison to 'indie' games which can largely be finished within the month. Then again, as i said im not shelling out on a subscription so i may well feel differently if i were!
@SteveButler2210 I believe guacamelee was only given out for free for Europe. I've had plus since this game has been out and it's never been offered in the U.s. I'm happy about it.
wahoo! another good month, Ether One looks interesting. Still can't believe the amount of people clamoring for Knack.
@get2sammyb It has been that way for a short while.
Whereas we have had the odd one out, most months see the same or similar game type, usually a side scroller.
Some of these Ive never heard of and thats probably why people arent responding, theres not much build up, or enough of a mixed bag as a rule.
Washout Month. Not interested in any of these, glad I've still got outstanding games to play this month...
This is the first month I've actually been disappointed with Plus simply because I have all the games already, aside from Ether One. Hopefully its fun. Oh well.
A good game is a good game, I don't care wether it took 500 people, 10 mio bucks and a year or 10 people, 20K and 3 months to make. It's free games damnit, stop yer whinning'.
please watch the language -Tasuki-
I'll get unfinished Swan but honestly I'm disappointed
Ether one has some impressive review scores, on metacritic looking forward to it.
NVM another crap month, at least the facebook gamers will be happy, some game's here they might enjoy.
Ether one is supposedly a good game. Why are people dismissing it before they've even tried it?
A month of Plus cost $4.16 ! We get all of this and online multiplayer whats to hate? I am very happy with this selection for May. People that get everything free from Mom & Dad dont understand Cost and Value of anything..
Kinda glad I don't pay for psn anymore and just buy my games when they go cheap. Also I don't play online so.....
I've been holding off buying unfinished Swan, can't wait
I already have 4 of these (Ether One and Race The Sun on PC), but even so, just from looking at it, this is a fantastic lineup! Right up my alley! Especially The Unfinished Swan!
Mostly junk. I'm happy perhaps with ether but the look and the puzzles look a bit crumby. Guacamelee is apparently good but I didn't like it. There are dozens of games like race the sun, unremarkable. Unfinished swan is a children's game I didn't much enjoy, hohokum is apparently a bit naff and although I like Murasaki baby; most won't.
@gbanas92 I thought of you as soon as I saw the lineup. XD
Put it this way xbox 1 hasjust castlestorm this month. PS4 owners have FIVE good games to play.
@Davros79 Yep! This month is saved by the cross-buy.
Maybe some of the problem is that there are some folk that really enjoy these games, and thats fine, but alot of them preach the whole "its free so you MUST like it" attitude.
"It only costs X per month so thats value" is another peach.
Value is entirely subjective to the individual and there is flat out not enough of a wide selection to cater for all, as has been evidenced by many posts here today and previously.
It being free is irrelavent.
It doesnt become worth getting because its free, and it doesnt make it "value for money" if you are repeatedly getting very similar games each month that you flat out dont enjoy.
For example, Basement Crawl is widely known to be trash, it got panned by nearly everyone, yet from alot of the mentality I see here often, if it was on plus, it would all of a sudden be "value for money".
I would rather pay £50 for a game I know Ill really enjoy than a fiver for 3 I just dont enjoy.
No complaints from me really, interesting line up and 40 quid a year for ps4 ps3 and vita is great value for money when you think about it
@get2sammyb I totally forgot Ether One was coming out on PS4 until this too. I haven't played it since the week it released on Steam though, so I'm cool with not paying beyond the Plus subscription to give it another go. I do agree with the consensus that variety would be appreciated though. I mean, I love a couple of these games (Well The Unfinished Swan mostly, but Ether One is great), but for those outside of that mindset or set of interests, there should be something to enjoy there too haha.
I thought Unfinished Swan was already a PS+ game, but then remembered that I bought it super cheap in a sharp sale a couple months ago, along with Super Guacamelee.
Whatever, I'm not upset by any of this--still lots to play.
Only interested in the Unfinished Swan. Guacamelee is amazing but I already own it.
Slightly dissapointing, but oh well, they're free so screw it. Might as well give them a try.
@ToOGoodOfAPlaya Preach! People love to sit in their high horse and act like they know better than you. The best one I've seen is people who aren't happy with the lineup must be children whose parents buy them everything.
@JohnKarnes So because you are satisfied with this lineup anyone who doesn't is automatically a spoiled child? lol give me a break
This month isn't looking very good, it's nice that almost all are cross buy, but I'm a bit tired these busted lineups. I'll still try all these out, but none of these games look like something I'll thoroughly enjoy.
@get2sammyb Japanese store already had games like Killzone and Natural Doctrine. So we can assume that the more we buy PS+ and PS4s the less Sony cares about us =). It's just natural for their system to do good things only when good things need to be done.
Yeah guacamole gonna put off buying axiom verge now as its a Metroid vania right? Where's knack???
@get2sammyb In the last 4 months we've had Infamous First Light, Transistor, Dishonored, Theif and Killzone Mercenary. True most people dont own all 3 systems like I do but thats not bad. Is PS Plus REALLY in a rut?
5 PS4 games(with the cross play thing) isn't bad. Not sure most are my types of games tho. But like always i will try them next week. Last months i found a GEM of a game which i just started to play i.e 'Never Alone' what a lovely game it is
@Davros79 good is too much
decent to mediocre seems a lot better
"We feel like Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park right now"
Oh you can't help but exclaim "that's a huge pile of crap"? Too easy.
Guacamelee alone makes it a good lineup.
That's why I stopped buying indies for PS3/PS4, because it's simply stupid having PS+ and paying for indies. Did they plan to make that impression?
Guacamelee was free on XB1's GwG and its not my type of game - pretty much like all of these. I can't say that the Xbox line up for May is better, although I do prefer games like Mafia 2 and F1 (although this is 2013 version) to any of those listed here. I am NOT trolling but its indicative of the trend that if any game is remotely worth downloading from my perspective, its those on the Generation 7 Consoles. Even though I still have my PS3/XB360 set up, I honestly can't remember the last time I played on them.
If PS+ and Gold were not required for online access, I would seriously consider cancelling both.
I'm interested in Race The Sun, all the exploration games dont interest me and I've played the living daylights out of Guacamelee.
@Davros79 if you park a Ferrari in a multi storey car park full of micras, people are going to see a lot of micras.
@Johnnycide yeah but whats the point of driving a ferrari if it has a "Micra" engine?
@get2sammyb How can they not afford the games? More people than ever are paying them for the service, as you almost need it to get the most from the ps4.
I will say that I enjoy supporting indie developers. Titan Souls, Hotline Miami, Rogue Legacy and more...I paid for them because I knew I'd enjoy the product and that indie devs need money to grow. However my friends don't see the point in paying for indies and actually ignore indies I'm excited for because "I'll check it out when it's free on PS+." This combined with the fact that they are often right and you get the games for free in a matter off months have made me question whether or not I should start doing that too. It's hard to ignore the money I'm spending to support devs when money is tight and it's all to often free shortly after.
Indie shmindie
No need for Sony to bring us other stuff than indies because we need Plus anyway for playing online.
