Leaks tend to come from trademarks or outspoken executives – you certainly don't expect caterers to be unveiling games. But one chef may be regretting his excited Instagram from earlier in the evening, as he may have just revealed Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5. It's not that much of a surprise, of course – the Birdman confirmed a new PlayStation 4 project with Kaz Hirai on stage at CES earlier this year.
What we didn't know then, though, was the name. Activision dumped the Pro Skater brand over a decade ago as it tried to mix the series up. Unfortunately, it went through a bit of a torrid time on the PlayStation 3, with failed venture after failed venture ultimately resulting in the series being put on hiatus. Could this be the return to form that we've all been waiting for?
Robomodo's on development duties, so, in the nicest way possible, we're not getting our hopes up just yet. However it turns out, though, it looks like it's going to be a busy few months for publisher Activision, with Call of Duty: Black Ops III and Guitar Hero all supposedly set to be announced soon. Seeing as the firm doesn't tend to attend E3, you may as well add THPS5 to that impressive list.

Tony Hawks and Guitar Hero games are great but they should have a longer cycle than annual franchises and stick to the guitar roots. I couldn't believe it when they stopped producing gh but I completely understood why it failed towards the end. In a year about 4 rebranded versions were pumped out and the team play with mics and drums didn't help - you may as well just join a band if you have that much free time. As for the skateboard peripheral....
I'd rather they bring Skate back. It seemed much more realistic than the Tony Hawk games.
Didn't they already announce this at CES in January?
Honestly I can't wait, I never stopped loving the Pro Skater games and I welcome this PS4 entry. Hopefully they go all out with crazy ideas; I heard there's gonna be hoverboards in the game too. Imagine a zero gravity THPS (Kinda like Mario Kart 8).
Show me some gameplay, Activision.
By the way guys, it's in the background of the picture in case you didn't notice.
Very odd source of info for a game leak. Poor dude looked like he didn't see the screen.
Well, if it's true, I'm happy. I love Tony Hawk games. Skate was a great game in terms of realistic skateboarding, but the Tony Hawk games are crazy fun and always a good time killer.
There was once a time, I would enjoy these games. That time has long since passed.

I'd like to see another SSX game but EA made such a hash of SSX on the PS3 I can't imagine they'd risk another addition to the franchise. I expect EA saw the flop of the PS3 version as a reflection of a changing market. I prefer to think it was more about their inability to listen to the fans of the PS2 SSX games who consistently asked EA to inject more fun into the PS3 version while it was being developed (after the first trailer was released which made it look more like Battlefield on snowboards). Fans also consistently asked EA (on their forums) to include split-screen 2 player mode. But the EA masters decreed that online was far more important than having fun racing people sat in the same room as "this is the internet age you know!". And so SSX on the PS3 was a flop.
So, I'd love to see another SSX or fun snowboard game but I don't hold out much hope of one being made. Not while gaming companies' attitudes to what "we" (the gamers) want are so closely aligned to what they are currently churning out for their AAA releases (i.e., serious games with online multi-player that have to be age rated 15 or more just in case people get the idea that they're getting something that's fun and not worthy of £45!).
At least I still have my PS2 so I can still play my 13 year old copy of SSX Tricky against friends and relatives every now and again. And it's still awesome (even in 480i !).
My favorite was part 3 on Gamecube and PS2. I loved unlocking all of the hidden characters...especially Wolverine. If they stick to this, without a story, and have a bunch of characters to unlock with some being Sony exclusives (imagine skateboarding with Drake or even Sackboy), then this will definitely be owned by me!!!!
I have to be honest, I've been skateboarding for longer than THPS has been around by far. And as both a gamer and a skater, I have to say Skate would be a better revival. THPS never made you feel the board like Skate did. It looks like skateboarding, but the button combos always felt like Mortal Kombat lol. I'll be getting MKX and would buy a new Guitar Hero, but not a skating game that felt like them. But! I will admit, for arcade fans this is a great game.
@Pipr As much as I love THPS I would also prefer a new SSX. Some of my fav PS2 games and I feel the PS4 could really use a good game like that.
