Addiction is a strong word, but that's how many would describe their need to play one single game time and time again. A title that you've never really been able to put down, something that your mind always wanders back to, whether it's because you're bored and unsure of what to play, or because you simply enjoy it so much. It may be the backbone of your entire gaming library, or it could be a guilty pleasure – it doesn't matter as long as you know that it's there, waiting patiently for your inevitable return. We've gathered several of Push Square's staff to tell us all about that one game that's always bringing them back for more.

I've been instructed not to write about Shenmue II here – even though it's my real answer – so I'm going to talk about Super Stardust HD instead. I've always been the type of gamer that's constantly looking for the next thing, but Housemarque's cylindrical shooter kept me occupied for an entire generation. I've lost count of the number of times that I've blasted my way from Lavae to Segomo – and sometimes back again. It was PlayStation 3 comfort food for me, and my obsession has persisted with the PlayStation 4 and Vita versions as well. When a game's accessible and instantly gratifying, it always has more chance of bringing me back – and the Finnish developer's arcade blaster, in my opinion, is the gaming equivalent of crack.

There are a few games I find myself coming back to regularly. On the PS4, for example, it's Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition that always pulls me back in with its cursed loot-based gameplay loop. But there's only one title, or rather, one series, that's always occupying part of my mind, and that's Mass Effect.
When Mass Effect 2 first arrived on the PS3, I played it solid for about a week until I had seen and done everything – then I started it again almost immediately. I repeated this cycle about twenty times before Mass Effect 3 came out, and then I did the exact same thing with the sequel. BioWare's trilogy simply never fails to capture my absolute attention, no matter how many times I've slogged through the entire thing. And when it all gets remastered for the PS4? You'll probably never hear from me again, but at least I'll be well prepared for the actual real life arrival of the Reapers.

There are several games that I make a point of playing through at least once a year, every year, like Alan Wake and Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. Unfortunately, neither of those have enjoyed PlayStation releases, which left me wondering if Sony's consoles even had a game that I just couldn't stay away from.
After doing some heavy soul searching, I discovered that that distinct pleasure goes to the original Medal of Honor. In my youth I was fascinated by World War II (I still am for that matter) so I found that being immersed in the game's incredible graphics (hey, it was a long time ago) and its world was astounding. I have the PSone version downloaded on my PS3, and I find myself breaking it out every year or so to bask in what I still think of as a game with great level design and fun (though very dated) gameplay. Plus it was one of, if not the very first, video games that I ever played, when I was the ripe old age of seven.

There's something about the eerie, solemn theme that plays in the menus of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare that sends chills up my spine. Not only because it's a hauntingly memorable song, but also because it brings up many memories I have with this influential first-person shooter, which introduced me to the joys of online multiplayer gaming, and the Call of Duty formula that's made the franchise a world-renowned success. I've played its epic campaign several times (even beating it on the Veteran difficulty) and have logged countless hours of heart-pounding multiplayer matches, some of which brought me together with friends that I'm still close with today. And all of that effort to get Red Tiger camo for a couple of weapons? So worth it. If the servers weren't in the terrible, hacked state that they're in now, I'd still be jumping back into this game due to its nostalgic, timeless appeal.

The game that I just keep returning to after becoming tired of other titles is The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth on the PS4. When I first tried this title, I thought it was really short, difficult to get used to, and the lack of a tutorial and information about how to play frustrated me, but it also gave me a challenge: to learn and adapt my playstyle in order to defeat the game.
After lots of attempts, I completed the release and thought that was it, but no: I was very wrong. Once the game's over, it unlocks more bosses, more enemies, extra levels, characters, and items, completely refreshing the experience. The main appeal is the randomly generated dungeons that create a completely unique experience each time that you play, giving you that great sense of adventure every time. I have put hundreds of hours into this, and still haven't beaten every boss or tried out all of the items, but I always return to this rather dark but brilliant indie game with a grin on my face for more.
That's enough from us, but what's the one game that you always end up coming back to? Are you playing it right now? How often do you boot it up? Tell us about your gaming mainstay in the comments section below.

All of the 16 bit platformers hold up great to the test of time, and I find myself going back to them quite often.......the first two Sonic titles, the SNES Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Super Mario All-Stars, etc.
I don't know why but Cadillac an dinosaurs
Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger for me. Absolutely brilliant, even now in 2015.
Timeplitters, left 4 dead, mass effect and halo wars
tough question as I keep going back to many games but I think the one I have gone back to the most would be Final Fantasy VI (AKA Final Fantasy III) as i've had that on the SNES since before VII was released in the uk, my dad got it in a box of SNES games with an adapter that he brought from a car boot sale years ago
I may be using the PS1 version when I play it now as the adapter no longer works but it's still the same game
Usually the handheld games for me. Kid Icarus: Uprising, PS All-Stars, Killzone Mercenary....
Oh yeah, Borderlands 2
Sonic the Hedgehog. I have a trusty copy of Sega MegaDrive Collection for the PS3 for when I need it.
There are two for me: Persona 4 Golden and Fallout 3. I've beaten P4G at least 4 times and the same for Fallout 3. If I had to pick one though it would be the latter. I sometimes get the urge to explore the wasteland.
I always have, and always will, go back to Final Fantasy VII. Living away from home in a shared house meant I could only take one console, and it made sense to take the PS4, but I find myself constantly wanting to go back home and play FFVII, nothing in terms of instant gratification and longevity has grabbed me more than this, other the COD: Modern Warfare (which again, I miss!) So far nothing on the PS4 has engaged me that much that I try not to think about swapping it over for my PS3 and reliving great games.... Roll on MGS: Phantom Pain.
Super Smash Bros (the whole series), I mean it looks so simply from the outside but just gets so deceptively complex and each instalment looks basically the same from an outside perspective but has just little difference that changes the feel completely. And then there is just the amount of love Sakurai and the developers he worked with put in for things like trophies and movesets and just everything, I've been playing Melee and 64 (Though not as much) for over a decade and they still have a timeless feel as when I first booted them up.
It's really a genre for me and that's the 2d metroidvania.
On PC it would be Inifinity engine cRPGs.
You guys have some great picks, Jedi Knight II and Shenmue II being stand-outs worth mentioning.
Elder scrolls. Always elder scrolls. Before elder scrolls it was balders gate. But until the next elder scrolls comes out, I always play the last one over and over. Heck, between pc, ps3, Xbox, I have bought 6 copies for myself. The launch of each, then down the road the collectors edition, then the legendary edition for pc and ps3, and have bought another 4 copies as gifts. Now a lot of these I bought on sale so I'm not completely crazy, but it's always elder scrolls. And when the next one comes out I will do the same most likely. Mass effect run s a close 2nd,every few months I just have to play through the trilogy.
Fallout 3, personally. I know. You'd never have guessed by my icon.
I play it on PS3 so I know that's not the ideal way to play, but it's what I've got and I'm happy enough with it (providing I save every six seconds).
I just can't get enough of that world. It's so rich and full. The first time I played it I was shocked at how spread apart everything was but now I see the land itself as a feature. The half decayed roads with beat up cars lining it, the crumbling overpass, scrapyards, water pumps... It all just comes together. Sprinkle in some memorable characters and you've got yourself a good time!
Theres a couple for me - Fallout 3, Skyrim. Not a console game but Counter-Strike is also a game I constantly go back to and love.
It would have to be starcraft for PC and the smash bros series.
@NAZA-187 where the hell did you find that?
I used to play it in the arcades as a kid in Portugal
The God Of War series
Might be obvious from my avatar, lol, but it's Duke Nukem 3D. It's still my favourite game of all time, I think the level design is incredible, innovative weapon design, it's challenging while not taking itself too seriously, and I like the humour/voice acting.
Dark Souls, Borderlands 2, any of the Ultimate Ninja Storm games and Advent Rising. I could play any of those games over and over again. Most NES And Sega Genesis era games as well, especially Darkwing Duck, The Legend of Zelda but I don't have access to as many of those.
@sub12: Im looking over the top of my laptop, and across the room, under the telly, is my Megadrive with Sonic3&Knuckles inserted. Awesome timeless classics
I've not been back to it in a while but yes, shenmue I & II. Destiny is still the most fun multiplayer fps I've played. Not much else qualifies, most games get dumped after completion. I have a feeling I'll be able to add elder scrolls online to the list I June. Also yes, if I had a ps3 still I'd be going back to fall out new Vegas constantly. How I'd love collections for those two franchises.
I could say Goldeneye but I won't, a game I crack out just about every time my cousin is round at my house is Micro Machines V3, not so much to race each other but to fight with the hammer power up, sad but true!
Rogue Galaxy and Star wars Rogue Squadron are my two go-to games. I can never not play them when nostalgia hits.
It has to be Star Control 2, Tactics Ogre, or Brigandine for PS1. All just amazing games that never get old.
It's kinda hard for me to decide, but I'd have to go with the Crash Bandicoot PS1 games and the Ratchet & Clank series. I can play any of those games endlessly and they wouldn't get old. I played Crash constantly as a kid and R&C came around when Crash was pretty much done. I still play them alot today and, with possible exception of the first installment of those franchises, they still hold well today.
Minecraft, can always enjoy a good build. Last Of Us (Specifically that online!) No other game can touch how good that online is.
That's about it, no other games really grab me like those 2 right now.
@ShootTheRunner ff7 coming to ps4!!!
The elder scrolls oblivion, i played that everyday for years.
Sold the PS3 so can't go back to Rachet & clank. Currently go back to Plants v Zombies Garden Warfare on the PS4. Lovely game
The Goonies 2 on the NES keeps me coming back as well as A Nightmare On Elm Street on the same system. Genesis has me continuing to play Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Sonic 2 and Earthworm Jim, while Super NES has me coming back for Super Mario World. N64 always has me at Conker's Bad Fur Day, Dreamcast with Evolution and Grandia 2, Playstation 2 with Jak and Daxter, Playstation 3 with many, Playstation 4 with Rayman Legends. Guess I'm more old school with the games, but the 8bit and 16bit eras are my favorite, in regards to the original Atari which I still play in the basement on my classic TV (looks horrible on the HD Televisions).
I think mass effect is becoming one of my favourite games of all time. Its just such a unique game. Usually with games I allways think to myself "they couldve done this better" or "it wouldve been really cool if you could do this", but not with Mass Effect. Even its flaws are just part of the unique and amazing game it is, I wouldnt change one single thing about it. Well, maybe the female voice actor, shes terrible xD
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi But doesn't Destiny have random loot and all those legendary and exotic pieces that take ages to get? That's the one thing preventing me from getting the game. That random loot system.
@sub12 absolutely this, sonic 1,2 and 3 and Mario all stars still hold up today. As well as those I love cannon fodder, final fantasy 8, Anna kournikova smash court tennis and any 8 bit Dizzy games.
The first game that I REALLY got into was COD4, but Fallout 3, Dragon Age, and Skyrim are probably my top three favorite games that I think about regularly.
@Superstick Go buy it. The random loot is the end game, for 20 hours you will be loving it. Loot is not the be all and end all of the game.
i prefer to not revisit games I like, just in case I ruin the memory. But if we're talking about straight up addiction...CounterStrike Global Offensive on PC. I hate, hate, HATE that game, but I always go back to it. Arrrggg...
For multiplayer it is Uncharted 3. For single player it is usually 3D Mario games except Sunshine and 3D Zelda games. I also have a soft spot for Super Mario World, Excitebots and Punch Out, either on SNES or Wii. And Crash Bandicoot Warped and Crazy Taxi.
I have a few, Donkey Kong Country Trilogy, Zelda: Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, Pretty much any Mario platformer. Although my one favorite, that will never get old is Secret of Mana.
Master of orion III and Heroes of Might and magic... i'm getting old.
@themcnoisy I don't know. I wasn't really getting into it when I played the demo. What makes it so great? My brother is obsessed with it and I don't know why.
Pokémon Blue/Silver e Crash Team Racing, I'm always playing these ones, I forgot the times I finished them.
For me it depends on the system.
PS4 - Diablo III Ultimate Evil Edition
Wii U - Mario Kart 8
NES - Mega Man (Don't have a particular one, any of the NES games)
SNES - TMNT Turtles in Time
Sega Genesis - Streets of Rage 2
PC - World of Warcraft
3DS - Gunman Clive
Over the years, Super Mario World is probably my most played game ever. In more recent times though, I've put many hours into Mortal Kombat 2011.
@Superstick the playability and feeling like an absolute superhuman. Throwing a sticky quickly followed by Knocking a few single shot frags soon follwed by a melee kill is just boss. I'm pretty adept after playing most of the halo franchise and its just a more refined version of that.
@themcnoisy How does Destiny compare to other shooters in your opinion?
Mass Effect trilogy is up there for sure. I work alot of hours so I also really appreciate Madden 2015...quick game before bed. I really want to get into Bloodborne, but I'm struggling. My first foray into From Software titles. I can't progress. I love it, but I'd also like to get to the first boss...I'm terrible...but God I love this game. I need help in the worst way. I ordered the collectors edition strategy guide and have been watching videos. Some day I will get this game...but for now I'm loving the experience.
Jetpac, Sonic the hedgehog or Jak and Daxter.
any Arcade game they never end. I do go play a few of them. Sometimes I want to play Defiance on PS3. But i have a lot I haven't even started, why go backwards.
I have played though Mass Effect 2 countless times.
@Superstick its improved a lot since I re bought the game, last year was terrible, since I rebought it a month ago its been much more generous.
Beatmania IIDX. Can fire it up for even a few minutes and have fun and you dont need to remember controls or anything. I wish they hadnt stopped the console series on PS2
Recently it's been Metal Gear Rising, but for all time It's probably been Ratchet and Clank 1.
Mega Man 2 or the original X. Or any of the Super Smash Brothers.
Mine would be the first Mass Effect. I must have played it at least 10 times now, it's probably my favourite game ever!
@Flurpsel I can't tell if you're joking or not, surely you mean the male Shep VO right?! Jennifer Hale is amazing and to me, Commander Shepard will always be a woman.
@THEundying27 when's is that due? I can't wait for that!
Super Metroid!! Every 18 months or so.
@ApostateMage lol no I really think female shep sounds strange. She is sort of sighing at the end of each sentence. I dunno, its not really a big deal
Red Alert 2
Mario 64
I keep going back to my favorite video game of all time :
All Pro Football 2K8
Diablo III Ultimate Evil PS4, Dragons Crown PS3 & was Demons Souls but will be Bloodborne now. I love RPGs & NG+, I will be playing Bloodborne for sometime to come I just love this game & its lore.
@ShootTheRunner spring 2015.
@THEundying27 I've just done some googling, and pretty happy with that! Although it's kinda Spring 2015 now so waiting to hear a release date now! Anyone know that?
I tend to go back to Driveclub. Create a long race on one of my fave tracks at night with dynamic weather and stick some tunes on, which has become easier with the spotify app now..
Minecraft gets a good look in, although once the career mode comes to The Golf Club, that is likely to be a guarantee for my new go to... while my old school game, is Street Of Rage 2.
snes : rival turf
mega drive : streets of rage ll
megaCD : road avenger
dreamcast : shenmue
PS3: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010). Whenever I'm in the mood for something fun, mindless, and relaxing this is where I turn, and is a game that I've happily spent 80 hours with.
Wii U: Tropical Freeze, for all the same reasons as above.
SNES/Wii VC: Super Mario World, and DKC 1 and 2. Three games that I love to sit down and beat in a single sitting.
@BigDaddyT0101 😊 I'm not alone! Can you believe people buy Arena and Daggerfall when you can DL them for free? Wonder if they'll do that for Morrowind...
Obviously I too vote TES. Morrowind was a curiosity to me, not having an Xbox myself, but Oblivion and Slyrim have been given substantial portions of my finite existence. Can't wait for the next one!
Kinda cheating... Any SMT game including Personas...
Not got one yet on my ps4. But black ops on my ps3. If my wife wants to join in we have to break out the old Amiga and play New Zealand Story. Rainbow island or bubble bobble. Or my favourite xenon 2 the mega blast just for the bomb da bass sound track
Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 and Okami....also Flower and Journey.
When I was in middle school, I would often replay KingdomHearts 2.
Star Wars: Battlefront. I still have friends who come over and play it.
Skyrim usually. But lately it's Kerbal Space Program if I'm looking to kill a few hours.
I think the one game I finished more times would be Uncharted 2 but I think I finished MGS4 almost as many times. Like 7 or 8...without skiping cutscenes xD
Galaga, Ridge Racer, NBA2K series, Pirates! (C64 version), Klonoa, Half-Life, LA Noire, Strider, Parappa the Rapper, Armalyte, Gradius etc etc etc.
Head Over Heels on the Speccy.
Super Mario world is my main go to game and super punch out
Megadrive Streets of rage 1,2,3, Manhunt ps2. Skyrim legendary ps3 and Fallout 3. And Streetfighter 2 turbo on my snes when it works lol.
I can't pick a game, can I just go with the console? Because I play SNES games all the time. Like, almost daily.
I always go back to The World Ends With You. Once a year i replay it. Other games that I go back to are: Persona 4 Golden, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid (original and Twin Snakes) and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.
Some games that I go back from time to time are Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country and Chrono Trigger.
Recently, I play some songs of Theathrythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call every week because it's very addictive and some courses from Mario Kart 8 and some stages from Bayonetta 2.
Burnout Paradise. Instant flow inducer. And its 60 fps open-world tech goodness, is still the only one of its kind.
