Oooh, those bloody indies, eh? Ruining everyone's fun with their SNES graphics and their obsession with pop culture references. "We're not ripping off old games!" they cry. "We're paying homage! It's different!" Meanwhile, the stoic and the knowledgeable among us shake our heads in disgust as another ten 2D side scrolling puzzlers get thrown onto the PlayStation Store. But wait a second – aren't we Push Square, world renowned indie apologists? Damn, and we almost had you fooled, too. Now that our cover's blown, prepare to get really angry about the fact that our staff voted for a bunch of indies as the best games of April 2015. Sickening.
Bronze Trophy: Mortal Kombat X
Being really violent can only get you so far in life, as evidenced by Mortal Kombat X finishing fourth in this month's internal staff vote. The fighter ripped a still beating score of 8/10 from editor Sammy Barker's review, in which he described the brawler as being "only a few scratches short of a flawless victory". Still, NetherRealm Studios' accessible yet enjoyably deep creation is a bloody good time, with or without friends.
Silver Trophy: Broken Age
It was down to our resident Schafer enthusiast Graham Banas to review Broken Age – Double Fine's arty 2D project which began life on Kickstarter. "When all's said and done, Broken Age makes an excellent case for why the adventure game genre deserves to exist in this medium," he wrote, awarding the whimsical title a score of 8/10. "If you're a fan of Tim Schafer's previous work, then this is unmissable," Graham concluded.
Gold Trophy: Bastion
Finally arriving on PlayStation platforms, Bastion is just as good as it's ever been, according to reviewer Joey Thurmond, who scored it 9/10. Heaping praise on the game, which has already garnered huge critical acclaim, Joey wrote: "This game is a testament to the type of human creativity, innovation, and wonder that are sometimes only possible with indie games." So, if you're looking to fight with someone over the great indie debate, you know who to call.
Platinum Trophy: Shovel Knight
It's one thing to imitate the greatness of generations past, but it's another thing entirely to actually improve upon tried and tested formulas. Shovel Knight is a title that's managed to take numerous classic gaming concepts and mash them into an irresistibly charming and brilliantly rewarding adventure. "It's unfortunate that this new version of Shovel Knight doesn't add much, but that doesn't stop it from being one of the best games on Sony's hardware," stated reviewer Ryan Oehrli. He continued: "If you haven't already, now's the perfect time to jump into Yacht Club Games' 8-bit masterpiece." A 9/10 it is.

For me, it's Axiom Verge (but did that come out in March..?). I have high hopes for Wolfenstein but only an hour in, plus that's May. Ermm... Bastion was a bit mehhh for me, I've never really got into it in the past but finally got all the way through on the PS4 and still my opinion is largely unchanged. Transistor is much better in terms of atmosphere/combat/story, in my opinion.
So I'll say Axiom Verge, even if it was a March game! lol
Was Ziggurat released in April too or was that very early May?
Didn't play any of these yet so I'm not going to vote.
If I did, however, I'd probably vote Shovel Knight for what I would like to play the most.
Bastion isn't as good as prove of creativity and worse than Transistor...
But Mortal Kombat is a real rubbish. I can't understan how WB even dare to sell garbage like that.
@kyleforrester87 Axiom Verge was March, yeah. It won our Bronze Trophy: https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2015/04/game_of_the_month_march_2015
@get2sammyb ah my bad. Well, it's a very good game. Bit stuck on the last boss, though.
@Gemuarto I have yet to finish Transistor! I'm still kicking myself about that. From what I've played, I consider it on-par with Bastion, but I need to complete it before I make that decision.
I imagine that intro will step on some toes. lol
Shovel Knight was great!
I just beat Bloodborne and got the True Ending... Now for New Game Plus with the Good Ending to end my nightmares right. As for this month, I already own Shovel Knight on both Wii U and 3DS and love it dearly, so congrats to it being on this list! Also, for once I actually like MK, because MKX smartly decided to have awesome systems that make me feel more at home, also Erron Black Outlaw is just too dang awesome.
Shovel Knight is so good. Glad my fellow gamers behind the Playstation brand get to play it too, as well as any in the Xbox Club.
It's just one of those games that deserves to be played by everyone.
Mortal Kombat stole the show for me, I do have a natural bias for it though, as it was the first game I ever played as a youngster. With that said, every game on this list was undeniably good.
Yeah, Mortal Kombat X for me, not even really close. Shovel Knight seems cool though, I'll give it a go at some point.
Driveclub for me ,still loving that game.
